I recently graduated from college, and like many americans today, i find myself not knowing what to do next. I can't seem to find a job because the economy is so screwed up, and I find that I'm getting pretty bored filling out applications and waiting for responses.
So, basically, what would you do in my position? Anyone else out there going through the same thing? Do you think that there are any other options I could be doing?

I don't live in America but I can tell you that i have certainly been in your position! I live on an island of 400,000 and finding a decent paying job is almost impossible to find. I'd suggest you continue submitting CV's whilst looking online for ways to make some extra 'pocket money'. I've also recently opened an Ebay account as i have found while clearing out the rubbish there are plenty of items i can sell. All 3 items i have put up for selling have sold within the first 7 days...it really is that simple! Also, make the most of your extra time by getting together with friends, going for a coffee, reading a book, watching a movie, exercising. It all passes the time! Hope this helps :)

I actually went to my temp agency this morning, re-took a few proficiency tests, and now I have a temp job starting next week. It won't last very long, but it is making me think that things can get better. Good luck to you!

When i was looking for work and was unemployed i spent alot of time researching resume writing and cover letters, jobs, branched out to looking for jobs out of the town i lived in. Then other thing i did was looked for internships through the YMCA (they pay)
I also made a point of volunteering at different places like the SPCA (humane society), computers for schoools and Ronald Mcdonald House so i could give the communtiy as well as have a current "work" type reference for my resumes even though the volunteer work wasnt always in my preferred career area

I've been thinking about volunteering with the humane society, but there doesn't seem to be a branch near me. But I think that I will look into other volunteer opportunities, thanks for your imput.

when i graduated from college, i was eager too, to submit my applications everywhere. :) but when a certain period comes without hearing anything from those people who are hiring, it gets tiring, and frustrating..
What i did was, well.. stayed at home, sold some burned cd's, baked to earn something, play a lot of computer games, watched a lot of tv shows and movies. damn! I had that routine for a YEAR! and i miss that because I have work now and it gets so tiring to do something.. lol.
I enjoyed the time where I didnt have work, it was a very relaxing time for me. (except for the bills - when they come - damn I go NUTS) :p

Wow, I think I'm going through the exact same thing, but luckily its only been a few months, not a year. I'm not sure if I could keep this up for a year. It would definitely be time to move back in with the parents before then, as a last resort.

When I graduated from college, I gave out applications to every company I was interested in. I also enrolled in a Gym and worked out for 6 straight months. You're lucky that you graduated in a scenario where call centers are everywhere as well as coffee shops looking for Barristas. You CAN try those just to give you income while waiting for a real job. Might as well enjoy working while earning.

My opinion to you is to not give up. You just graudated from college so start networking with people you new from college talk to alumni and get connected. I don't know what your field of study is to know if it is in demand. but even in these bad times there are jobs out there just keep looking. My neice who just got her masters in medical business had a hard time getting a job when she had her BA in Biology. employers and people were telling her its because of the major she chose, I told her sometimes it depends on your work experience also... they want you to have both.. but she got her a job a month ago as a medical office specialist of medicine... something in that order and is making good money
so trust me you will find something in due time just keep looking

Why don't you spend your time earning money online? I mean if you can't find a job, I'm sure you could use the extra money! I can recommend some great sites to you if you're intersted, just add me as a friend and send me a message. :-)
Some other ideas - why don't you go to barnes and noble (or a similar book/coffee shop) and read a book and drink some coffee? Go out and meet some new friends. Go to the gym, it's good for you and a great way to pass time! Once the weather gets nice you can spend more time outside, maybe talking walks and exploring.

I am one of those crazy music lovers that if i want to i can listen to music for the whole 24 hours of the day. Im that crazy for MuZiQ.
My past time is to surf through music sites, download some songs & put them in my respective folders. I have a collection of say around 110GB (13,000)songs (Hiphop, Trance, House, Rock, Metal, Electronic, RnB, Experimental etc).
It's ma favourite past time.

I quit my job before I realized the economy was getting bad. I don't pay attention to politics or economics so I didn't know. Luckily I got accustomed to not having any money before the economy hit really bad. That sounds as if all I did was spend, but I really didn't. Sure I spent a lot on food, but recreational things such as t.v, computer, the expensive stuff, I hadn't spent a dime on.
Well in any case to answer your question, to pass time I play video games, and I also get online to earn. I read as well, and go out from time to time with my fiance to either go out to eat, get things done in regards to our wedding, or just go grocery shopping with him and his mom, and / or dad.
I like the first responders suggestion of making money, it helps pass the time, and this is a very addicting site. It's a little extra money, and a good way to save so you can spend without worrying.

If you really want a job, you can't say you get bored by filling out job applications. I've been through that I think I send out more then 200 application in a month especially I didn't have a direction at that time.
Helping out the charities is another good option as you can see more of the world through them. Hopefully you will be able to find your direction then.
Meanwhile, try some online job if you are desperate for money.

I agree the economy is really going bad and i dont see any chances of it improving in the near term. But this did not mean that you stop searching the job. The God help those who help themselves. So it is not the time to sit idle looking of some time passing stuff. Just go outside work hard and find some job. Very soon you will definitely get one.
