In some countries of the world abortion is legal like in my home country. Abortions here are permitted up to 24 weeks pregnancy. In a some other counties like Malta, for example, abortion is illegal.
It is possible to think about reasons for ladies that have an abortion. Some ladies might have a social reason like being a student and the pregnancy has come at an inconvenient time. Other ladies might have a medical reason like their baby if born would be severely disabled. A few ladies might have their life in danger if they carry on with their pregnancy. A few ladies might have become pregnant in an attack so they find the pregnancy distressing.
If you were the government of your home country would you allow abortion?
If no why?
If yes why?
If you would have any time limit or special circumstances what would those be?

this question goes down to the virtue of make your own choice and pay for its consequences. we can make our own choices and decisions, and we have so much freedom that we can do almost all things. if ever i'll allow abortion, i'll make policies pertaining to getting pregnant and being imprisoned something on that effect. its hard to explain but the main point is to pay those irresponsible people..

If a lady gets pregnant during an attack then she is not irresponsible. No form of birth control can offer 100% protection against pregnancy. One married lady already had two children and she aborted her third child but regretted it afterwards. Sometimes in life people can make the wrong choice and my guess is that lady will be depressed for the rest of her life because of the abortion she had.

I am all about being able to make your own choices and live your life as you want but abortion is not something to take lightly. I see that in some situtations it is necessary. Like, if the pregnancy is harmful to the mother. If you don't want your child, you still have the responsiblity to give it a fighting chance. Adoptions are always an option. I think abortion is a selfish thing to do.

Personally I would never have an abortion because a baby is an innocent one. I feel sorry for aborted babies and think of them as the missing people of the world. If I was the government I would make sure abortions were only allowed at one hospital in the capital city of my home country. There would have to be that the baby would be severely disabled and would therefore suffer in life or the mother's life was in danger. For all social reasons the babies would be adopted and the biological mother would be given one thousand pounds by the adoptive parent.

I'm against open slather abortion, as I believe there are enough warnings and methods to eliminate unwanted pregnancies. However, I also believe there are sometimes circumstances where the woman has a good case. Being a rape victim is a good example, and there could be other health realted issues that might require an abortion.

Those figures are really amazimg. I can't think of a social reason, that isn't selfish, that warrents an abortion. 98% is an incrediblly high number. In fact it's a disgrace!

I saw statistics showing 98% of abortions are for social reasons. Only 2% were to save the life of the lady or because the baby would be disabled. Those figures related to my home country. If a lady is attacked and she gets pregnant through that she might want an abortion. The baby wouldn't deserve it but the lady should be helped and the man should go to jail.

I think this is a very serious issue and do not say this lightly. I think women should be given the opportunity to make the choice for themselves. Not have church and state come in and tell them what they can and can't do. Not to mention family members who make it very difficult as well. I think it should be decided upon very early and taken care of. Hard issue but something women should be free to decide on for themselves.

In some countries near to my homeland the abortion time limit is 12 weeks but in my home country the time limit is 24 weeks so that is shocking. People in the world can sometimes have their own choice but there ideas may have been shaped by family, their religion and the law. Some ladies that have an abortion regret the decision afterwards and they might get depressed years later.

I do not believe I would want to know a woman who had had an abortion and didn't feel regret and sadness for having made such a decision. That woman would be too cold and uncaring for my psyche to invest in.

this is a touchy subject for people,
personally as a single dad of 3 I think that abortion should only be considered for medical reasons. Or for criminal reasons ie an attack if you know what I mean.
Such as if the baby is going to be so ill that its chance of life is low,
or if the birth of a baby could due damage to the mother whose giving birth.
Also I think it depends on the circumstances as no baby should be born into poverty or born to be used as a meal token (I know a few parents like this).
At the end of the day we cant judge people as everyone is different what is right for one is wrong for the other.

Ok,just like in your home country,my home country take it as legal things.
If I was the government, I also thought it was legal. To abandon this only leads to the abortion underground. Accidents may come to the women and there must be a way to stop things they don't want.

Back street abortion is really sad and that is why some countries choose to make abortion legal. Because something is legal it seems like it is acceptable. It would be better for my home country to lower its abortion time limit in line with some countries in Europe.

I don't think i can ever allow abortion in my country if i were the government... since i strongly believe that such an act is one of the greatest sin a person can do... to kill and unborn innocent child is quite horrific since everybody deserves a chance to be born into this world...
If a woman doesn't want to get pregnant... then she shouldn't do thing that will lead to that situation... or simply use protection... it is not fair to let the unborn suffer...

The issue here on abortion is very multifacetded here and very complex, people are oposed to different things on different aspects and different levels. A greatly misunderstood aspect in this is the legal issue. The constitution, you may know if you have studied u.s. government a bit, is granted by our constitution very limited authority and responsability, with the rest being in the hands of the people and the states. Abortion is not really an ara designated for them in any way. So to many of us, it is a matter of state law and oposition to federal ruling on this. The Roe. v Wade debate is more about states rights vs judicial legislating. With many of us, it is a heavy 1oth amendment issue.
Our consituttion, in the preamble, at the end, describes a right to " life , liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. So it is considered a responsability of the government to preserve life. What some states are doing now, is writing and trying to pass amendments to their own state constitutions to define life as begining at conception, and in effect, nulling roe v wade by utilizing the preamble assigning to the federal government to guaranty a "right to life" and pretty much ordering the feraal government to adhere to it and bypassing what is considered a very unconstitutional ruling.
Now If such a bill came up in my state that would make abortion ilegal except for medical nessesity, I would probably vote for it. If I were a state legislature, I don't know that it is a hot potatoe bill I would want to touch, but again, I would vote for it, along with an amendment that would than shift funding from abortion to adoption aid funding, tax credits for adoption, streamlining of the process, and birthcontrol/abstinence education.

Thanks for your super response detailing how things are in America regarding abortion. The government has a leader and he or she must be comfortable all the legislation that is put in place. I really like the idea giving tax credits for adoption and making the adoption progress much easier. Abortion allowed only in the case of a medical necessity would be reasonable.

1) Yes, because no civilized nation should endorse biological slavery.
2) I'd have it legal until viability (~24 weeks) and by that time, it should be restricted to health or life of mother.

Hello freind
if am the government,i would restrict abortion only in case, and that is the abortion done after gender determination,as many people still go for the abortion, coz it is a baby girl inside, other than this there may be many genuine reasons to get the child aborted,as you have mentioned,so in that case i think, its better to abort the child if we cant give him a good life.

I have heard that some ladies have an ultrasound scan to tell them the gender of their baby. Personally in pregnancy I like to do that for my own enjoyment and then whichever the gender the knowledge I have helps me imagine my baby. I think is it terrible for a lady to have an abortion because the baby is female and she wants a male.

If i were the government i would have strictly banned abortion for ladies below 21 years. Above 21 years if anyone wants abortion the should have strict medical proof, for why they adopted abortion?.This would surely decrease the numbers of teen pregnancy.

Teenagers would become more responsible if that was the law. If a lady over 21 years old wanted to have an abortion and she had to go through an application system she might only have an abortion for a serious reason like see has been attacked, her baby will be disabled or her life is in danger.

Hi there, i'm actually from Malta so I get a first hand picture of what it is like to live in a country which has made abortion illegal. As a country of 400,000 you do find that there are a lot of close minded people, which is sad for me to see. Personally, i would make abortion legal. I think every woman has a right to make a decision about something that could change the rest of their lives, and like you said, there could be other reasons to think about having an abortion. Women should have the right to choose.

It is fascinating that abortion is illegal in Malta. I can see that although it is the law the citizens like you all have their own ideas. A lady isn't allowed to have her own choice she must do what is legal. I imagine that people are more responsible because they know it is legal and ones that must have an abortion head abroad. Irish ladies pop over to my home country to have an abortion for example.

I don't like abortion, I don't approve of it except in cases of insest and rape, but I would keep it legal only because someone who does not want a baby bad enough will do it anyways and will do it unsafely, and could harm themselves terribly. It is just better that be available to be done safely. I don't think it should be easy to do. I think they should be stricter about it and make women go through counceling and discuss other alternatives, but it is better that it stays safe and legal as much as I hate the fact that people do it.

Yes I would allow it. I'm not personally for abortion as I don't think I could ever have one, but I'm not going to stand in the way of a woman's right. I have a daughter and love her dearly and aside from the case of rape or if my life was in danger, I don't think I could ever abort. I've seen my daughter grow in me from the first ultrasound to the 3D ones right before her birth. I can see that she is a live and living creature inside of me.
Now that being said, I do oppose late term abortions. I'm sorry, but unless your life is in danger or the fetus will die moments after birth or live a horribly pain filled few months on earth before dying, I don't believe that you should be able to go 20+ weeks then wake up and go , "Oh I think I'll abort today!" I do support a woman's right to pick up to a certain gestational age. I think if a woman reaches a certain gestational age and doesn't want to be pregnant, there are options. Medical advances have made it possible for a fetus to be born at 23 weeks and have a chance of survival. If the mother doesn't wish for the pregnancy to continue, there are always plenty of people who would gladly pay for all costs associated with a NICU baby.
I would probably have the cut off around 15 weeks. But that's just me. I think in the beginning zygote stage, there is a huge difference between that and a 23 week fetus or even a newborn or an infant.
