You need a breed that doesn't shed. Now short haired breeds SHED a LOT. My cousin had a chihuahua and that little thing shed a lot. I was amazed that it still had hair left. Now the breeds that don't shed are: Maltese (small breed), poodle, toy poodle (smaller than a regular poodle) and I think a bichon frise. Now, I've had a maltese before and she doesn't shed. I never knew what shedding was til my husband and I got kittens. The breeds that I've mentioned are long haired dogs, though you can always get them buzzed down and they're still cute. But long or short, they don't shed. It's a whole different story with other dogs to these 3 breeds.

I would recommend shihtzu or poodle. If you want smaller, you can get the miniature poodle or imperial shihtzu. These two breeds are non-shedding. If you want something more exotic, try a Chinese Crested. (hairy or hairless...which actually has hair, but minimal) those are also great temperments and smaller dogs, but a little larger than the shihtzu.
Other short hair dogs such a dashund DO shed. We own one and he will leave tiny little black hairs all over your white shirt if you pick him up or cuddle him. You just don't notice furballs around the house because they are short. You will still see them on your clothes, and bedding, etc.

Try a maltesse, shitzu or a bichon frise. They dont shed and are small. I have a Shitzu maltesse mix and he doesn't shed, they are great for people who have allegries.

I am not real sure but I do know that dogs like CHIHUAHUA's and PUG's are smaller dogs with shorter hair, or even DACHSHUNDS you can get with shorter hair and they stay smaller dogs. I have never had any of these breeds so I am not sure of how they behave..that might be something you can do some research on first. Maybe you can do some research with your hubby so he can see what your ideas are. I wish you the best in hopefully finding a dog that will make both of you happy!
