If you were snowed in would you have enough food to eat?

How long could you get by if you could not go to the store? We were snowed in for a couple of days last weekend. I did just fine. Made some new recipes in fact. I always keep things like canned milk and powdered milk on hand and they came in handy last Saturday.

Hi GardenGerty, unlikey to be snowed in in the middle of an endless heatwave or even in the winter as snow comes but once every 35 years. However if it did descend in the winter time that is when my freezer is full of home cooked meals as whenever I go on a cooking binge I always make extras to freeze for the days when I don't have time to cook or just not in the mood. So we could watch the snow while eating mousakkas, shepherds pie, beef casserole, and homemade soups. The more likely scenario is that we would have no electricity to cook it with!

I need to do that. It would help when hubby is supposed to cook and does not know what he wants. If the electricity went out we would use a propane grill, I guess. Or a charcoal grill out on the porch. It sounds like you could use a solar oven right now.

No oven at all at the moment Gerty, hope you don't mind me shortening your name now by the way. I am currently slumped in a heap with the laptop on my knee as heat exhaustion has finally overcome me. My little one has been bringing me coffees today to try and revive me and right now he's at his friends house till about midnight so i don't need to cook for him thank goodness. I have a somba I can use for heating stuff on in winter if the lecky does go off but it's a bit of a nuisance as it tends to smoke.

Back in March of 1993, we had a home here in AL and an apartment in Nashville, TN where my husband had been transferred back in 1992. Well, I came home one friday against the advice of my daughter. It snowed me in for 6 days. I had not been to the store, but I had plenty of food. I was only out of power for about 22 hrs, so that was no problem. I got home and there was no snow with 8 miles of me. It was pretty here. But within 1 hr, my ground was completely white and it got worse from there.

If I was snowed in yes I would have enough food in the house for at least for a couple of weeks. I have plenty of can food and frozen hambuger that I can thaw out and make different dishes with it. I probably would run out of bread and milk, but we wont starve.

You sound really set up for some weather. Don't you live in western Kansas? Was the weather rough for you last week? I think I might end up making biscuits and the like, for bread, and then I have the canned and powdered milk. Not great to drink, but really good to cook with.

Well, honestly I would be in bad shape. Right now I have a frozen veggie chicken patty, and water from the tap. Oh, and a few coca-colas. I need to go to the grocery store, huh.

Better go girl. I know it can be hard on a fixed income, but if you can get some surplus food together it sure makes it easier in bad weather or in times of illness.

When it's going to snow, I always make a big pot of chili or beef stew. It's usually enough to last for a couple of days, and gives us something to eat if we lose electricity. We also stock up on canned goods for the winter, just in case....

This is a great post. I would never be snowed in where I live, but rain, flooding or earthquake might make this an issue. But, I know that. My pantry is stocked, and my fridge mostly so. I could last here inside for months as long as I had electricity and running water. Without them both, probably weeks.

Hi, thanks for visiting my old discussion. I am not quite as stocked up now as I would like to be, or organized since the move. I believe one thing we have not considered is to have water on hand in an emergency. I have come across articles talking about canning water in glass jars for emergencies.

@ElizabethWallace Where we live now I have actually considered that I could have Amazon deliver groceries. No store here that would do so.

@GardenGerty I have a fairly large pantry. I have three cases of bottled water there in case of emergency. I ignore it until six months have passed. Then I use up one case and have another delivered with my groceries, which I buy monthly online. The delivery man puts the case where I need it, so 67 year-old me does not have to lift the weight.

Yes, we would definitely have enough to eat. I have a large chest freezer loaded with meats and emergency supplies, as well as canned goods on hand. I keep a gas grill in the garage just for times like those when we get snowed in and/or there isn't any power. Glad to hear you were well prepared when you had your snowy weekend!

When the power goes out in the winter, I have one of those large kerosine heaters. I don't use it very often but it's sure nice to have just for those times lol. I know what you mean about the fans when the power's out, I found that if I put my kerosine heater right underneath this one ceiling fan, the fan turns on it's own and circulates the heat. (Kind of like those old fashioned Christmas angels where the heat from the candle keeps them spinning hahaha) When our power goes out, so does our well pump and also you can't flush. For that I keep boiled purified water in plastic jugs in the freezer, at least that way we can make coffee, water the pets, etc. For the bathroom, I keep a couple of 10 gallon lidded buckets with water in them just for that purpose. Nothings worse than not being able to flush when there's 4 people in the house lol. Sure saved our bacon this winter when we were snowed in without power for those 2 days!

I need to get some propane bottles for the grill. Power was out but only for a couple of hours. We have gas heat, but it does not circulate without electric fans on the furnace. We had hot water, also gas, but no way to cook. I would have brought the barbecue in, if I had to, but ventilated the house really well.

My husband often asks me why I have so many items on hand. One of them is canned milk. Canned milk can be used for so many recipes. Cream sauces are better when they are made with canned milk. We could survive for about a week or more with what we have in our house.

Just told the hubby that we didn't need groceries this week. He was stunned. I have stocked up on staples and we will need to use what we have in the cupboards and freezer.

we used to have a ton of canned stuff and whatnot and to be snowed in would be a snap, but due to money issues, job cutbacks and whatnot, we have been dipping into that supply, so although we have a fairly full freezer still, i would have to say no.

Hard times do eat into our stockpiles. I used to be under employed and so I had to stockpile for summer, when school was out, because that was when I was out of work. Right now we have more than enough, but hubby is always buying more.

Yes, I admit that I hoard food. It is because of have been poor once upon a time and knowing what it is like not to have enough food. So now I am always stocked up. Periodically I have to go through the cupboards and plan how to eat up stuff before it gets too old, though.

Yes, I have been poor, and hungry, and I am never completely without food now. It is practical. I need to date some of the stuff I get, though, so I do use it at its prime.

We actually hurried to the store Friday morning and they got lots of milk. We had more than enough of anything else for meals for quite some time. My mom always thinks we are out of food, but why she thinks that when they stuff is falling out of the pantry and there isn't enough room in the pantry for it, I will never know! Marsha

She may be about my age, and have done without. Because I went hungry as a child I have always tried to keep various staples on hand. I think surplus is good, if you use it when it is still fresh, and do not waste it. It takes some thinking, though.

Snow? We barely have rain here.... But I'm what they call a stocker upper. The kids may not like all the stuff we have in cans, but if necessary I can keep us feed for a while.

Okay, if the roads all buckled from the heat and drought would you have enough to eat? It sure sounds like it. I think if kids get hungry enough they will eat.

as long as we have the instant food supplies. then thats good for us. we dont have any snow but our place always got huge typhoons which always leaves us with huge destruction and many lost lives. but we still survive and fight what has become of our places. so i guess, we always our very own instinct in living during such calamities. jhelai

Hi there GardenGerty! Here in my country I did not ever experienced on snow only storms and floods. If that happened to us I'm so sad for it because I dont have enough stored can goods at home. I usually buy daily in the markt for food.Yes it is true that we can make a new recipe in a situation like that. But still we learn new things to eat and just like discoveries of new things coz it is really needed.

Buying fresh in the market is great when you can do it. I know my dad used to be that way. Now, I like to not shop as often, so we store up food and other things.

I would be fine, about 30 yrs. ago we had a blizzard that shut down our city for a long time. I live in Northern Ohio, blizzards don't happen that often but in the winter we know that sometimes we might get snowed in for a few. I have plenty of flour, sugar, pasta, canned milk and vegies. I am showing my age, the youngens don't know what it is like. Its a perfect time to cook and try new recipes in the winter when its cold and snowy out. I am hoping that the weather would start to match up with the calender.
