When you cook, do you hurt yourself?

In my time I have injured myself more than once. I have cut myself, and I have burned myself. Last weekend I was making caramel sauce, and I splashed some hot sugar syrup up on my cuticle of my right thumb. Luckily it was calloused, so although the blister looked bad, it has been relatively painless. I remember my mom talking about spilling sugar syrup into her shoes as a child. I cannot imagine the pain.

Hi,my friend.Just take care when you are cooking.I also met similar things.Usually it's the splashed hot oil on my arm and sometimes even on my face.Maybe the oil is too hot and the vegetables contain water, then it's easy to splash oil out.So just be careful when we are cooking.Or our skin will be hurt by hot oil or other hot splashed things

I thought I was being careful, but I guess I misjudged something.

Oh, dodo 19 I hope we do not jinx you with this discussion. I do not often burn or cut myself, but this last week I had that burn.

You made me wince with pain! Just thinking of that hot sugar syrup spilling into your Mom's shoe...ouch!
When I was about 10-years old I got a lollipop factory for Christmas. I remember how thrilled I was to get this gift. That was until I burned my fingers to bad from the melted hot sugar. I only remember using the lollipop factory once. Then it disappeared!

I was wondering the same thing. Who in their right mind would make a toy that could cause such severe burns. I was fortunate.

One more ouchie for ya. When I was cooking bacon (had a really low cut shirt on w/o support if ya knows what I means!) the grease splattered and hit some tender flesh. That was one cooking incident that I didn't repeat!

Same kind of thing, I am sure. Where were all the child safety enforcers then?

Many times I have cut myself as well but the worst kitchen accident I had was about six months ago or so. I was carrying a large pot of pasta from the stove to the sink to drain it and just as I got to the sink my left elbow ( the one I had dislocated last April ) gave out on me and I poured a lot of the boiling water on my stomach. I let out a blood curdling scretch out of me as I stood there holding my T Shirt away from my skin. Like I said that was at least six months ago and you can still see where I was burnt. The very worst story I have ever heard of was two young girls years and years ago were cooking pork hocks in a pressure cooker. They had taken it off the stove but the pressure had not all realeased yet and here they were pulling and tugging at the lid to undo it when finally the seal was broken away from the rubber ring and the lid went flying, they got burnt real bad and I was told there was pork hocks on the wall and the ceiling as well. Guess those things are dangerous if you don't know what you're doing.

I did something similar as a newly wed. My problem was that I just turned the pot backwards. I have very poor body mechanics. Ouch.

Oh GG, I remember a time when I was in school and I had gotten up one morning as I always did and started cooking my breakfast which consisted of bacon, eggs and toast. I had finished cooking the bacon and was cooking eggs and all of the sudden a loud pop and grease had landed on my shirt and stomach and I screamed blue blazes and of course a slew of cuss words!! Then I realized I was at home! I'm underage and my parents are just down the hall asleep!! Although the eggs were cooking, I was watching like a hawk for one of my parents to come trotting down the hallway ready to tear into me! I was scared out of my mind! But they didn't wake up! I went to school and when I came home, I walked on egg shells for a few hours til I couldn't take it anymore and asked them if they heard anything that morning and mom asked what I meant and I told her oh I dropped my books on the floor and wondered if you heard anything and she said no. WHEW!! I breathed a sigh of relief! LOL Since then, I've burnt myself just as painful but not in the stomach but other places.

Why did you not let her know you were hurt? That could have been a really serious burn. I hurt thinking about it.

oh!oh!..I've had my share of cuts and burns, too. Two months ago, I burnt my left leg with the edge of the pot of our rice cooker. Stupid of us, we just had to put the rice cooker on the floor. At that time, I was having an argument with my mother and that happened in the kitchen. She said something that really annoyed me and I backed up, and too late for me to realize that I almost stepped on the boiling rice cooker. I hurt my leg badly and even had an infection. Good thin git's healed now but it left an ugly scar. Any idea how to remove my scar? I know I was stupid. I'm sorry.

I often cut myself with the knife my husband keeps sharp! I often burn my hand or finger when I'm taking something out of the oven, or checking to see if a cake if finished cooking. I have popped grease out on my arms. I have accidentally picked up a hot skillet with a hand that didn't have a hot pad in it!! I guess we all do silly things at one time or another.

As a teen I put my hand down on a hot cookie sheet. That was a bad burn. It is not unusual for me to bump some part of my arm taking stuff out of the oven. Hubby says that is why I should pull the rack out first. Yes, I have done that same skillet trick. Ouch!!

Yes, real ouchy is the word for it. My worst injury probably did not really involve cooking, but rather opening a can of cat food. Cut my thumb, passed out from blood loss and got taken to the ER.

occasionally, yes. It comes with the territory LOL
Mostly I cut myself because I am not paying attention to what I do or I go too fast.
I have burned myself in hot oil but it is rare. What happens more often, however, is the silly dipping my fingers in the boiling water when dropping something in it, and again just because I am not paying attention.
I never let go until I am really close to the water because that prevents splashing, but sometimes I go too far LOL

I did something totally stupid the other day! I had fixed a pan of cornbread in my iron skillet. I took it out of the oven, and turned the cornbread out onto a plate, then sat the pan down on an empty stove burner to cool. A few minutes later, I needed that burner for something and without thinking, started to grab the handle to scoot the skillet out of the way! Thankfully, I only burned the inside of my ring and middle finger.
The girls had some after sun lotion for sunburns. I put some of that and it took the sting out immediately and it didn't even blister!

Hey, lady, you are my sister. That is how I make cornbread, as well. I have also done the same stunt and grabbed the hot handle.

I have two iron skillets. I don't know what I would do without them!
THere is nothing better than fried eggs cooked in bacon grease in an iron skillet!
Have you ever cooked biscuits in your skillet? I love the way they brown on the bottom and get light and fluffy on the top.

I think you are feeling my pain lilybug. Yours would have been more painful, cause that flesh on top of the foot is very tender.

hi, gerty...
Cooking is one of the chores where you can't avoid accidents or getting hurt.
I get cut or burn or scalded now and then while cooking. I even dropped some utensils and dishes on the feet at times lol... clumsy much
but yeah, I take it as something unavoidable especially when I am in a hurry to cook and still have some things to do at home.
The end result is something to look forward to and the pains are just something that we can ignore especially when you see the appreciation on the faces of the people you love when they eat the dishes you prepare...

That is true. It is sad when no one cooks at home. Some days I have more accidents than on others.

I have been known to splash Hot oil on me, or Hot water when cooking or burning myself when pulling something from the oven as well. I have also burned my tongue a time or two when trying something that was still too warm so it can make it upsetting for sure.

Every once and awhile.Burns, nicks. Nothing ever really serious. I hurt myself more gardening, fighting, than I do cooking.

I have been know to leave the kitchen with cuts, burns, and maybe a few bruises from time to time. I believe that my worst experience was similiar to your mother's. I was taking some hot cereal out of the microwave, when it spilled on the top of my naked foot. I was in a whole lot of pain. It left a grey looking bubble on my foot for a few days. Finally, I got the okay to stick it and drain it. I never want to experience anything like that again.
