I have recently completed Ramchandra Guha's "India After Gandhi". This is a wonderful book and now it is the best book that I ever read on India. Previously, my best was Panditji's 'Discovery of India'...but Guha's book is a wonder.
I like this book because of the way Guha took reader to the complex jungle of India after Independence. 1948 was a very happening year of India, and Guha lucidly wrote all stuffs. Then the coverage of emergency era is also mind blowing. Guha is a sociological historian and lives in Bangalore. You can read him on Sunday's Hindu magazine's third page, Outlook and EPW, Seminar. I would recommend all to read this book, if you have time as it is a bit healthy in terms of pages.

Discovery Of India By Jawahar lal Nehru I like most. In my opinion this book give true picture of ancient India. I like this because of its great script.
