Thanks for the information. I wanna come out of my puzzles. As is known, mastery of English is based on the extensive vocabulary.I think i have spent so much time and energy in memorizing massive words. But the result is disappointing.I find my listening English and Oral English are still poor as before. So my problem is that,do it improve ur Listening and oral English to extend the vocabulary? Thx a lot.

Hello Heng,Thanks for the post. When you try to memorize trying to mug up words, its difficult to remember in the longterm,so it is better to make some of your sentences with those words and use them at appropriate situations like in a relevant mylot dscussion. As mentioned in a previous post "According to the web site www.improvingvocabulary.org making up your own examples can also improve your memory of words by 670%"

Thank you very much for further advice. I optted for a not bad dictionary whose every word has a following sentence. The principal point of your opinion for me is trying to make some sentences with the new word i have learnd. A very good proposal! And I will start that with discussions in Mylot.Haha

One can learn the words and prepare.Mylot can be like a laboratory where you can participate in discussions and make use of the words learnt.According to the web site www.improvingvocabulary.org, making up your own examples can also improve your memory of words by 670%.

Good move! As an Englishman, who has a very limited knowledge of other languages, I am always impressed with the general standard of English here on Mylot. While there may be mistakes, it is a very rare occurrence when I am unable to understand what the member is trying to say. Well done everybody!

Thank you elsoft for giving us this site, it really help us to improve our vocabulary. Even myself hard to speak English with the right word vocabulary usage. We are not natural English spoken but we have our English class in our education. So we are learning from this but somebody does not took their studies because of poverty that arises in their lives. But being educated does not stop only in school. Again friend thanks for giving this site. Have a nice day!

yeah, i agree on your last part! "being educated does not stop only in school" whats the use of learning all those eight subjects(for me), when you cannot apply it when you go out into society? all these crappy-and i mean CRAPPY-studying can only get you a qualification. imagine you go out and see someone, he shows you all his fantastic qualifications... you are incredibly impressed... but you look up, see that whoever has been showing you all those is actually a dumb NERD! someone who does not know how to face people... does not know how to interact with people... does not know how to socialise... then what is the #$%@&!% use of those qualifications? yeah, you may argue that the qualification can get you a job. yeah.. just a job. but after getting that job, how are you even going to interact with your colleagues(dunno how to spell lol), much less say your clients! getting yourself a social life has a heavy weightage in life. SAY NO TO SITTING HOURS IN FRONT OF YOUR TEXTBOOK! oh yeah, another thing, PEOPLE WHO STUDY ARE MOSTLY MEMORISERS! they cannot do without memorising.. if the teacher just twists the question a little, they are dumbfounded! no idea how to be creative. why? cos' their brains are filled with knowledge from the book! i simply can't stand these people

I checked it out and a lot of it made sense. When I went to school, we were told to not only to look up the word in the dictionary, but to read every example of the word in a sentence or a paragraph until we got the gist of it. Then we were told to also use it either by writing sentences or speaking. It is also helpful because there are some words that mean the same but are used in separate contexts. This is not helpful just for those who are learning English but for those who want to be writers, for those who had to quit school or changed from the academic stream to the business or vocational stream and find that they have to struggle later on to use the right word in the proper context.

English is my first language, but because I don't have a very good reading level I often lack vocabulary skills as well. I found the book "The Idiot's Guide to a Smart Vocabulary" to be very helpful. But now I need to learn more advanced vocabulary for the GRE.
