My husband goes to the doctor April 15th they will start testing to see if he has sleep apnea, are there other ways of testing, other than taking a sleep study? The doctor mentioned a polysonogram, is anyone familar with this test? And does anyone know the cost of doing any of these tests? We have health insurance for him, but with a very high deductible. And, hopefully the insurance will cover some of this. Has anyone been cured of sleep apnea with other precedures other then wearing the mask when sleeping? Any advice from anyone would be greatly appreciated.

i'm not sure how much sleep studies cost as a general estimate. it depends on the clinic you're at, and then what would be left after your insurance covers. i'm sure the insurance will probably offer something, since it's not really elective. he needs to have this done to be healthy. sleep apnea can eventually kill people, or cause brain damage before it gets to that point. it would be best he went and tried to find a maintenance plan that works with him. a CPAP machine is really your best bet.
a polysomnogram measure a lot of different body functions while you sleep. he will have a lot of electrodes placed all over him, so they can measure things like his heart function, brain function, movement, his oxygen saturations. i think in all, there about 14 or 15 channels used to take different measurements. it will be painless to him, and as soon as he gets over the anxiety i'm sure he'll have with other people keeping track of his sleep lol, he should be fine. all he needs to do is sleep, and that's it!

Thank you for the information. We have been putting this off for way to long. This time we will do whatever it takes. I never realized how bad sleep apnea really is. And how much it can really affect a persons daily life. I love my husband so much, and would give anything to have him back to his old self. I sure hope this can happen for him.

you're welcome. it can also put him at risk for other problems and diseases throughout his body, so you really are doing the right thing. i'm sorry you and your family have to go through this though. good luck, and i hope things work out for the best soon.

I have been using a CPAP for about 7 years now and can answer your questions. I could sit here and write a book. Instead, send me an email at willie@willielowery.net and I will send you my number. I'll be happy to answer your questions.

Hello,
Well, my husband went to his doctors appointment today, and he will be going to have the polysomnography on May 20th. He is not real happy about this, he keeps saying that it's not sleep apnea, he's just tired. But, I know that is more than that. I'm with him everyday, and have been with him for a lot of years. He doesn't get any good sleep, and he gets very cranky with me whenever I talk about sleep apnea. He says that he will not wear the CPAP. But, from what I have read from people that do wear this, they were amazed at how much better they felt afterwards. I pray this is true. And I would love to know how long did it take you, to start feeling better? And, is it still okay if I email you? Thank You.
