We just bought a couple kittens and we put there litter box in the downstairs bathroom. so for the last couple days,we keep them there to learn where there litter box is for a little while. So far, they know.(These are our 1st kittens) So are we taking the right steps so far?

That's fine to keep them confined in a small area for the first day or two. Be sure to keep the toilet lid closed so they don't drown. Kittens have been known to fall in and not be able to get out.
Just let them out from time to time when you are home and can supervise them. Put them back in the bathroom at night or when no one is home until you are sure they will be safe with full run of the house. This will take a few days to a week depending on your kittens age. It won't be long before they can run around all day and night. Kittens learn much faster than puppies.
Be prepared for a few accidents for the first week or two. Very young kittens are like small children; sometimes they get so caught up in playing they don't know they need to go before it's to late. If kitty looks like he needs to go, put him in his litter box. It won't be long before he is fully litter box trained. My current kitten took about 1 week from when I showed him the box to when he used it every time.
