Where did the Simpsons get their names?

Somewhere I heard that the creator of the Simpsons did it on the spur of a moment and gave the main family characters the names of his personal family. Have you heard this. How would you feel if your child made you famous this way?

Good question =] Maybe they just picked random names?

I think the first answer is correct. I have heard it somewhere. It just made me laugh. One never knows what will happen when they have kids, especially if they are extremely creative and out-of-the-box.

I heard that Matt Groening named the characters after members of his family. Bart was an anagram for "brat" and referred to himself as a child.

Well since Bart is just a bit of a brat that would be funny! I can imagine the ribbing that takes place for his family member. Thank you for your response.
