I'm sorry, I've never lost luggage. I guess it would be a pretty tough thing to deal with. Thank you for your comment.

Hi sysdexlicwriter, I and my family have had one extremely bad travel experience. It happened last year. We had gone to a resort 240 kms away from Bangalore, where we live.We had driven there, and the holiday was great, with all of us enjoying the place, the food etc; and on our way back we decided to take a different longer route and stay at another tourist spot for a day and drive back home. We left the resort after lunch, with enough time to cover the 100 odd kilometers to the next spot.Since the roads were new to us, we had to drive carefully because there were no markings or sign posts and after an hour or so we realised that we had lost our way. The road was patchy and bumpy and there was no one around to ask for directions. It was jungle around us. Finally we heard a jeep approaching, we stopped the jeep and asked for directions -one of them gave us proper directions, and in fact made a little sketch with the names of the villages that we'd come across... So we had to go back and take a different road. We got on to the right road, and then, it began to rain. And here when it rains, it literally pours completely blinding you. We had to stop, by then it was dark. Predictably, we again lost our way and finally somehow managed to reach the town at 11 pm, and went to the hotel, where they said they had no rooms. They had waited until 9 pm and the given the rooms to other travelers. We were all hungry, very tired - decided to have dinner at that place and drive back to Bangalore. This time we had moved away so we had a long drive back home, nearly 300 kilometers and the roads were bad, undergoing repair, we finally reached home at noon the next day. We all slept through the entire day to recover.. it was quite an experience

I agree with you that any amount of planning can go wrong because of unknown factors. But on looing back, I feel that we got to learn a lot from that experience . First of all never to overlook little things - like we had a torch but the battery had all but run out, and we had no match box or a lighter since none of us smoked. We had run out of drinking water, having not carried sufficient amount thinking that we would reach the place in a couple of hours. Never again are we going to take things for granted...I can imagine how you felt having lost your way, but the next time it makes you more confident right? it has made us a little more prepared ...

Hi Kiran8, Before my dyslexia was corrected, I seemed to always get lost no matter where I was. When we lived in south Florida I was so lost that I ended up at the ocean and I had no idea how to get inland. The area was so bad that I did not want to chance asking for directions. That was a very tough drive. I can not imagine what it might be like to be lost in a jungle. I am so glad that you made it home safely even though you were tired. This truly is a story that shows how travel plans can really go wrong. Thank you so much for sharing your experience with me and all the other readers. I hope all of your travels from now on will be worry free and happy traveling.

I have had a few nightmare times in Asia for different reasons. On my trip around the world I foolishly ate a salad at the port in Indonesia. I got on the ferry to Malaysia and began throwing up. For the next week I had terrible sickness and a very high fever. I had thought I had been careful about what I ate and drank. In the future I won't eat a salad in developing country where I am having to drink bottled water. A few weeks later on that same trip I was still in Malaysia. One dark evening I fell down an open drain and badly injured my leg. I cam home from my trip that has been for just over one year on crutches. In the future I will always take a torch with me if I go out after dark. The worst by far experience that I have had happened in the Maldives. I had been cycling down a chain of islands connected by bridges. I noticed a beautiful palm fringed beach so I cycled down a side road and pushed my bike on to the deserted beach. I took photos of some stunning looking islands just off the coast. A man late teens or early twenties approached me and attacked me. I felt shaky after that awful event. I will never go alone to another deserted beach however beautiful it looks. Most of my traveling has been great and I have stayed safe I would like to point out.

You are welcome. Hopefully people learn for other's travel experiences. When I was in Guatemala I knew that some tourists there have been mugged. Therefore I hid my money in five different places. I was fully aware that there might be some danger there but I stayed safe. In the Maldives I was relaxed and enjoying the hot weather and the beautiful sight of the islands. I had no idea that I would get attacked and that came as a great shock to me. Such events are rare I am glad to say and it has made me more careful but nervous at times. Like I had to wait for hours at a Bulgarian train station and there was a weird looking person hanging around there.

I greatly appreciate your comments. You have shared some very good pointers for anyone traveling. That must have been a frightening experience on the beach. I would never think that that could happen. Also, I have heard that in countries where you must drink bottled water, you should also eat only cooked foods. You have shown that to be true. Once again thank you for your insight and sharing your experiences.

So far my travel to various places are turning out just fine! You can say probably i am fortunate, but my pre-trip preparation for all my trips happened to get pay-off , just by spending sometimes to gather information about my destinations can really help a lot along the way in avoiding unpleasant surprises for me. I am sure it will works for you too, sysdexlicwriter!

Hi sysdexlicwriter, I have travelled extensively and been very lucky. All arrangements have worked out very well with good flights and nice hotels.
The exception was my fourth visit to Bali last October. "Visa on arrival" system is chaotic and so badly planned it needs to be seen to be believed. That the authorities allow this nonsense to continue day after day is beyond me. Bali is known as "The Island of the Gods", it would be better described as the "Island of Frauds". They tried to cheat me every time I wanted to change money and in the shops often tried to give me the wrong change after offering a "special " price. Solution is easy. I will never go back to Bali.

Thank you for the advice. I learned a long time ago that traveling with someone you don't know can be disastrous. If you are new to MyLot, WELCOME to the site.
