I think he was reading the results of his doctors visit, Rememember he had a cough that wouldn't go away and he went to the doctor and his results came in and he was reading it and nothing else was said about the bad cough. I thought it must have been bad news like maybe he was dying from cancer or something else and didn't want to suffer from his illness so he took on the people giving his neighbors a bad time. The movie was about a disgruntled racist that had Asians move in close to his home and how he softened when he got to know the neighbors kids. You're stereo typing the people in the USA. I live in the USA. There are some good police but I do not trust hardly any especially in the state I was born in. As for the multi race regions, where I live now we have alot of people from different countries but 25 years ago it was populated by mainly caucusians but not any more.

I think the point was that the police couldn't do anything because the family wouldn't speak up about who did it. With all of them being involved in killing him, they would go to jail for life and the family wouldn't have to ever worry about them again.
