The other day in front one of the Wlamarts in my area I saw a couple with bags holding a sign that said "Stranded and Homeless". I felt so bad because if I had any cash on me I would have gave it to them. If I had any cash extra in my account I would have drove to my STM...but I didn't and I felt for their situation. I know there are homeless people in my town, but the thing is you never saw them on the streets like in bigger cities. It got me to thinking how this is going to be more prevalent in our society and cities. And it makes me angry how it happens in the first place.
Are you seeing more homelessness in your area than before?

I find it hard to believe that the people in your example did not have friends or family they could contact. Most churches offer assistance to the needy in the form of vouchers for food and lodging. The problem is there have been to many abusers of the system to make people feel like helping those that are in need. In my area we have families that are what we call lifers. They have been on welfare their whole lives and their children go on welfare and their childrens children go on welfare. They are in the grocery store buying steak with their food stamps while decent people who have worked and payed taxes all their lives are eating boxed mac & cheese. The system was broken long before it was needed.
If the people you give money to really need help they would go to the authoraties, or learn how to help themselves. Maybe everyone should prepare a list of locations for churches, food pantrys, shelters, assistance offices-any sort of organization that can help-and give it out (with the money-if you feel the people are really needy)

People in my area who never had to depend on any type of assistance in their life, in fact look down upon those, are now applying for it themselves.
I understand there are people who abuse them. But I also understand that now days families are not what they used to be. And I thank God my parents made sure our family is close enough to help if needed.
But not everyone has this because a lot of people only look out for themselves. And I see that a lot too.

Maybe you could have gone home and gotten together a few small snacks or a hot meal or a drink and taken to them. It might not be a lot but I am sure that if they were stranded and homeless, then they would have been hungry too.
I sometimes get free items online that I don't really use and keep them in my car and handout to people that I know could use it. I have even given soap to a homeless person before and toothpaste. They will appreciate it if they are truly homeless.
With the economy the way it is, I am afraid that we are going to see a lot of homeless families and that is scary. I feel sorry for the kids as they can't help the fact that they are in that situation.

I think there are a lot more homeless around now that ever before. I think with all the Job losses, foreclosures, etc. it will only continue to happen and really wish that there could be a better solution for this as well. But when it comes to giving to the Homeless like this, this is something around here I am a little more cautious with as well. Since there are so many people around here who act homeless but are not really it makes it sometimes harder to Trust anyone else as well.

The government should be more concern on the plight of the homeless especially in countries where the weather is cold. I am just wondering where do those people who are homeless take shelter in the harsh weather? I am very fortunate to be born in a country where the government are very concern with her citizens. They even built houses for the hardcore poor. Seldom do you see people without homes in my country. Our society here are family orientated. If they don't have place to stay any family members are willing to put them up in their houses. We can always count on our families and relatives as a temporary measure when we are in a desperate situation.

It's quite scary actually. We would be homeless if we hadn't pulled together just enough money to buy a camper and a used vehicle to tow it with. We lost our business and our home during the decline in the economy and due to a decline at the time in my hubby's health. I think that the economy is much worse than most people realize at this moment.
Want to really be scared? Go to youtube and watch some videos about the great depression. Listen to those who lived through it. See what things were like. Then look around.

I am in Australia and where I live in the suburbs we are quite sheltered from that sort of thing until we go to the city. If you travel by bus the stop is just outside a homeless shelter for men which is usually full so there are often men sleeping outside the door hoping for something to eat.
I look at these men in their dirty shabby clothes and I wonder what each one's story is. I am certain that some are educated and used to have decent lives but have been plagued by misfortune, addiction etc...
The men outside the shelter I am quite certain are genuinely homeless; there is a certain look in their eyes that can only depict a soul that is broken. It is so sad.

Oh yes we really felt bad even here seeing a family with little children sleeping on the pavements, old men and women, children, but sometimes the problem of these people already taken by social welfares to a shelter with food and maybe trained for works to do to have a normal life but still escape from the institutions and go back to the streets. For those cases of homeless and others in need of help, we really feel for them. how we wish we could be of help but we have common problems at the moment we don't have the ability to do. We just hope that those who are capable of helping would do their share.

Hi Taface, I don't think you should feel bad, if you had the cash you would have given it, which is a lot more than some would do. We have a few homeless in our town that I see everytime I am there, when it rains I want to get them coats and wellys but I am not sure they would apreciate it. But I do buy a coffee and burger with chips for the homeless, I can't do much for these people but I can help their hunger that day!

I am not seeing it the way you have but I am sure that it is going on. Homelessness can happen to a lot of people. Most people don't think about how easily it can happen. Especially if you have children to take care of. You lose your job, you have to live off of your savings and then before you know it you fall behind and then what? If you have no family or no one to take you in, where do you go? The government is so backed up with requests for help and really the kind of help they give doesn't help it just keeps you down. It is a problem but how do you fix it?

There is quite a lot of that in my city. I know most are legit but some are just panhandlers. It's very disturbing to see so many homeless in a country with so much. It's a shame you have to question if it's legit. So many people are literally a couple of paychecks from being homeless. I can't think of anything worse than not having a warm safe place to live. Or not being able to provide it for your kids. Some nights when I crawl into my warm bed I think how fortunate I am.
