Free upgrades

Do you always get your phone upgraded for free when you are entitled to it. At the moment I don't because I have a phone which I love and I don't want to swap it for something new which might be less reliable.

I personally haven't had a contract phone yet therefore I haven't received any upgrades. I'm waiting until June until the new iPhone comes out and I'm buying a contract then. Hopefully if another one comes out the year after I will receive an upgrade; I'm not sure how it works though.

Usually you sign up for a definite period, say 12 or 18 months and for that period you have to stay with your tarrif and keep using the phone model. After that time you are usually offered a new free phone.

I have upto now always upgraded, but to be honest I refuse to be put onto a 18 month contract as just had one with my Iphone. So next upgrade in june I am going onto a sim only tariff and buying a phone maybe off ebay or something like that.

Sim only is a good deal as it gives you the freedom to change when you want, rather than when you are 'entitled'.

I have a plain, simple phone with no extras so I don't upgrade at all. It's only $15 a month and I have over 40 hours of airtime saved up on it. I'm not really interested in changing phones or upgrading--I rarely use it but I like to have it if I need it.

If it is an item that you keep only for convenience or emergencies then I don't see why upgrading would be important.

I find that i dont use contracts that get me the free upgrades because i only have the phone for emergencies or quick im gonna be late or should i pick something up calls. i spend about 20 dollars every 3 months on prepaid minutes as compared to 35 a month for a contract. So i dont get the free upgrades and i only buy the 75-90 dollar phones.

Yes you are probably saving money doing it that way if you do not use your phone that much.

I tend to get another cheap phone if I know I'm gonna continue using the service... I'm currently using T-Mobile... Few weeks ago, I didn't need my blackberry anymore so I went on ebay & got myself one of the most basic phone... It's nokia 8890... Come febuary of next year, I'll probably get a real cheap or even a free phone just to keep it as a back up phone... That's if I'm still happy with Tmobile at the time...

Does that mean you don't go for upgrade deals?

I completely understand how you feel. I usually keep my phone until I start having issues with it like it's completely outdated or in the case of my last phone, it literally started to fall apart(but after 4 years of use what do you want). I don't really understand why people are in such a hurry to switch phones around. I get the applications on my phone that I want, get my contacts set up as I want, get the ringtones and everything set, just the way I want it. Then you think I should go through all that, and pay for all the extras, just because my contract is up? Nope, no thank-you.

I know. It can be such a big hassle can't it? I guess many people just want the latest gadgets, especially those that are quite image concious.

I drive the phone companies mad because I don't use my mobile much and only want to make calls or text. I think they think I'm weird Also like you I like my phone and until it breaks down I doubt I'll change it no matter what I'm offered.

Makes sense doesn't it? Why change a good thing?

My mum used to be like that when she first got her phone. I have drilled it into her that the whole point of it being mobile is that it goes wherever she goes! She now takes it with her and is seeing that it makes life that little bit easier!
