I think that people say sorry when its not their fault as sort of like a condolance, its more of like " I think that sucks that happened to you" but just with way less words, at least thats why i say sorry to people when its somthing i had nothing to do with

In some occasions, sorry means I sympathize with you for experiencing something that bad. But normally, it is because one has to do somehow with the incident. There are also rare times that someone was thinking some other things while talking with you and he just want to apologize without telling you why.

I think he meant sorry, you are responsible for this mess. Meant he was not going to be blamed or take responsibility for this error. When we disagree with somebody on some point, we say sorry, I dont agree. A polite way of disagreeing.

I also have such a habit of saying 'sorry'. When something bad or wrong happens, I like to use this word. Sometimes I really apologize for the thing I did, but sometimes I just express my feeling of pity, maybe try to console someone in the matter. This word is very useful in the life, because it can function as a lubricator in the interpersonal relationship.

When someone says sorry fpor something they did not do they are basically saying you are on your own with whatever it is.
