For me Real player took less memory when compared with Winamp. Real player v.10 takes less memory than v.11. I frequently used Real playerv.10. Later I came to know about VLC player and I started using it. It plays various file formats like .avi, .mkv, .flc etc. Limitation is for quick time files and .rmvb and .ra (real player files). Later I came to know of KM Player. It also plays almost all formats like VLC player. Personally I think KMplayer uses less memory and works faster. What I have noticed is that there is no perfect media player. Each player has some issues and some benefites.
I would recommend you to have VLC player, KMplayer, Real player(for its .rmvb codecs), Quick time(for its codec). This should take care of all your media needs.
You could also go for Nero Show Time and PowerDVD. Its worth it if you like to have a good movie watching and music listening experience.

I am using total video player, quicktime, winamp, cyberlink powerdvd, media player classic, real player and windows media player. I think they are all best to me because each player has each specific function I like to use. As long my windows operating system its supported by a audio and dvd codec. My players will all be fine. I am using this setup for my video and audio files

if you want ultimate file support, then using media player classic (coupled with codec pack) or vlc is your best option, both have low memory footprints and have wide format support ranges. For customization and aesthetics, i like winamp because of the skins and plugins at your disposal.

In my opinion media player classic and km player is the best media player. They support almost any video and audio format especially kmplayer, which has lots of feature like screen capturing, audio and video feature etc etc. Media player classic is also good as it take less memory than any other player.

I am also using Real player! I don't like windows media player! because i am feeling it is waste! I can not run my DVD files in windows media player! I am really enjoying real player because it is allowing to download any video from Internet! I think it is a big plus in real player!
