Leverage is not automatic - you will have to choose your leverage for each trade. If you have 100$ and the broker allows you 1:500 leverage does not mean you can trade with 50,000$. It only means that is the maximum value. For each trade, you need to specify. e.g. you say you want to invest 10$ to buy the Pound with a leverage of 100, which will mean you can buy Pounds worth 1000$. That is how it works.
If you are a beginner, then you should avoid high leverages in any case. You can lose your money way too quickly! Keep it at a medium level, not at the maximum.

Hi
I have not worked with metatrader and so I am not too sure as to where the option is present. You can look up the help or FAQ of the site, but if you don't find it, then you can just email them and ask for it.

What is the currency pair you are trying to buy?
All I know is the margin requirement for each pair is different,
Maybe this is the answer you can't buy it.
Or other reason is when using demo account the margin requirement level more than real account margin requirement level.
