Why are Hollywood Actors Adopting children from Poor Countries?

India

Mia Farrow (Hollywood) of yesteryears started the tradition of adopting children from other countries, in the '70s. Today it is Angelina Jolie, who is in India just to adopt a baby. Similarly, there is Madonna. Then there is Meg Ryan. And there are a number of other actresses from Hollywood, who are searching for babies to bring up! Is it the latest fad? Status symbol? genuine compassion? to prove something to the world? What do you think?

Regardless of whether they did it for press or not, you know those kids have a much better chance than they did before of living and turning into decent human beings. Perhaps simply because of the publicity, these kids get more attention than they would in any other home? Just a thought. i think Angelina, Madonna (etc etc) are genuine. I know Angelina is...she's just that type of person who cares enough.

Going to the brass tacks, youre right in your own reasoning. But why dont these film stars adopt children from Darfur(sudan), or from Afghanistan? That would attract world focus to those countries, which are ravaged by famine and lack of proper governance?

They do it because they realised that there are people who deserve their help. Many rich and famous people do indulge in helping poor, not only Hollywood stars. It is good for society, it is good use of their extra earnings, it is good publicity for them too.

I can't say for sure, but I think it is mainly to get good publicity, although I wouldn't think Angelina or Madonna are that starved for publicity.
