Well I have started some leeks in the house right now and I'm wondering what the success rate of leeks are ? I know that it take 10-15 days to germinate and that it takes 150 days to harvest.. but really what is the hardyness of them and how successful are they when you grow them in states that have a colder climate like Pa?

I've never grown leeks but I think they grow pretty well in our climate. I'm not sure about PA. They shouldn't present a problem as long as you keep them watered. They are quite a hardy plant but slugs like them. Leeks are great as a mild onion flavour. I like them a lot.

I have only gotten to eat them in soups and I wanted to try them in other things that is why I decided to grow some so I can experiment and at least get my kids a variety of veggies and a broader horizon of taste.

bella, bella how does your garden grow? I think that half the fun of planting a garden is learning from it. I think they grow a lot like green onions. I don't remember having any problems many years ago, when I planted mine. I wish I could garden again. When I had my garden back in and throughout the 70's, it was so much work but it was it was so rewarding. I planted everthing I coud think of, with very few exceptions. They do say that planting garlic around and through your garden will prevent a lot of bugs. And you'll have fresh garlic whenever you want it. So bella, tell me what else you are growing.xoxoxoleenie

bella,
I wish I had known about the garlic back in my garden days. I think I missed out on the celery. I did bell peppers and chili peppers, asparagus, radishes, carrots and green beans as well as what you listed. It really was wonderful. Keep me posted on everything. Are you planning to do any canning or freezing? Let me know if you have any questions. I have a great salsa recipe.

Well Sweetheart I am anything but a gardener but my Grandad had the greenest thumbs of anyone you ever met and won national awards for his Dahlia and veg and leeks were among his favourites! It would be a little early for them here unless they were under cover but on the whole they are very hardy veg and I am sure you will have great success! Need any tips and I could ask my brother who unlike me takes after Pop! lol xxx
