I also have to have a fan going no matter the temperature. I need the noise. My youngest daughter is the same way so she knows to have a fan ready for me and I do the same when she comes here. I have been places where I have no fan and the least little noise wakes me up. Also during the night if there is a power outage I am wide awake as soon as my fan goes off.

You have got used to the sound. It happened unconciously but now you need the sound to sleep. Your body got used to a particular environment. Changing it can be difficult.
I prefer silence while sleeping. However its not necessary. The fridge in my room makes a bit of noise. This was disturbing to my mom but my body has learnt to ignore the sound. The same goes for the sound made by the fan and sounds made by a few passing planes. However I get angry at people who play loud music at night. And due to the anger I am unable to ignore the music and affects my sleep.
Strange way the body works, does't it?

Oh yes I do jillhill. I need my tv on. The volume has to be a certain level, not loud but very low. It's just having the tv on that makes me feel better. I believe this is because I used to be afraid of the dark when I was a little girl so as a 40-year old woman, I still can't sleep in the dark. I know a punk I am right, lol!

I dislike it when there is a fan on when I'm going to sleep unless it is really hot and then need it to stay cool. Other wise turn that noise off. I live on a busy street and have cars going by all night. That is OK and then the police and fire as well, I sleep right though it all. So not so Quiet but I just don't like the fan on or the Tv unless I happen to fall asleep on the couch. YOu have a great day. Your friend onlydia

Well I guess that would be hard in my case I need fan to be able to sleep since I live in a place where it is so hot and humid. I could not sleep without is at all.
I have a bad habit that I use the TV as my sleeping tool. I lull myself into it by watching TV. It makes me sleep more soundly, I do not know why but when they would turn it off I get awakened.

Yes, I do need noise in the background to sleep. Right now I'm not sleeping at all. I've been dealing with insomnia for the past couple of days. When I was a child, the noise of the central air conditioning coming on would lull me to sleep. But if I wasn't asleep by the time it kicked off, it would take until the next time it kicked on again for me to sleep.
When I was a teenager my sister told me having the TV on in the background helped her to sleep. I found that works for me, but only if what is on the television is a comedy. I'll stick in a Golden Girls DVD (yes, I own some, lol) and eventually if I don't have insomnia that night, I'll fall asleep. But I can't fall asleep if something like the news is on, or even a reality show.

Hope by now you are getting some sleep....I had insomnia for a while....I got a very wonderful doctor that told me to lay in bed.....think of one problem I have...think of a solution and make a point to follow through the next morning...I used to toss and turn all night thinking of things I needed to get done or resolve....this really helped me....hope you can find a way to get some rest...you always feel better when you have a good nights sleep!

Hi Jill. I use a fan as well. It's actually an air cleaner, but it basically does the same thing with drowning out all the extra noises of the night while my family and I sleep. My husband is the one that turned me on to the fan idea when we first got together years ago. It was a bit hard for me to adjust to a humming noise while I slept at first, but now I couldn't imagine sleeping without one. Which can make it really hard to sleep when the power goes out. Especially for our two kids because they have been raised with a fan their entire lives. So you can just imagine how fun it is when the power goes out at my house in the middle of the night.

The humming of the airconditioner makes me sleepy and if I do not hear it, it feels like there is something missing.

I know exactly what you mean! Normally I sleep with the television on but I prefer just having a fan. If I'm asleep and the tv goes off then I wake up almost instantly. Is something wrong with me for needing noise to sleep?

I got used to sleeping with a fan on when I was living in a noisy neighborhood and when I moved to the country I guess it just kind of stuck with me. I don't use one now that I am back in the city area. I just never plugged it in after I moved. It is never totally quiet here, but it is a lot less noise than in the middle of the city when I learned to sleep with the white noise.

I can sllep anywhere and with what ever noise. If I need sleep it doesn't matter if there is noise or no noise. I often fall asleep in front of the telly. But when I go to bed it is so very quite.
In the past I have fallen asleep at many parties, on a old bus on the way home from a concert.

It's the hum of the computer which is on 24/7 .lol sometimes it's the pealing bells in the nearby church. When I hear them, I go back to sleep.lol. But when I can't sleep, I write and then I can fall asleep already. Cheers and happy blog hopping.,

I've had asthma ever since I can remember, and when I was little I couldn't breathe at night unless I had a fan on my face. Because of this, I need to feel air moving on my face or it feels like I can't breathe (even though my asthma is much calmer than it used to be). I am a heavy sleeper, and can sleep almost anywhere (I love sleep), so now I can sleep no matter what. I still prefer a fan though, and I fall asleep REALLY fast when the TV is on.

I can sleep anywhere, whether noisy or not. I also have my fan turned on when sleeping but I turn it off when i feel cold. Close your eyes, try to imagine that you are listening to white noise, and now you can sleep well... =)
