Be careful not to get scammed! If you get a check from a mystery shopping place and told to keep part of it and give them back part of it, it is a scam. You put the check in your bank and write them a check then their check bounces and you lose all that money.

You shop for a research company and give feedback. If you want a more detailed explanation you can check the blog link in my profile to help you to find a detailed explanation, just look for the Mystery Shopping blog entry on the right of the blog if you scroll down a bit. You'll find some legit places to find opprotunities there as well.

Mystery shopping or Mystery Consumer is a tool used by market research companies to measure quality of retail service or gather specific information about products and services. Mystery shoppers posing as normal customers perform specific tasks—such as purchasing a product, asking questions, registering complaints or behaving in a certain way – and then provide detailed reports or feedback about their experiences. I did one once and I got paid for the service I done and all I did was inquire on the services this certain has to offer me through the phone and I had this sheet to fill up and send back to my employer. Then they put my payment through my atm. It's cool but too few jobs like this available.

I haven't done this but from what I have read & understood, basically the company that you work for will send you to a store to buy something & will ask you to report on the service - like how long it rook for you to be served, was the person who served you nice & helpful, etc. Some companies will ask you to buy a certain thing & they will reimbuse you the cost of the item when they pay you for your time. Some companies also ask you to go on a certain day at a certain time too.
