Hi my dear friends,I do not know why you want to change your OS to a lower one.I think you should attempt to use vista and accept it.
Vista is development of xp,although it request critical for your laptop quality. Some people do not like vista after ther years using xp.If you try to accept vista you will find it is a very interesting OS .once you get into the habit of vista, you will never miss xp.
Best wishes.

I guess it could be done but I think you should consult Microsoft about it. It would take you sometime since if you bought a new PC with the Vista installed the drivers for your motherboard might become in conflict with the XP OS you will install.
From what I know Vista has a different sets of drivers for your hardwares and downgrading from Vista to XP might have that problem since the machine you have is setup for Vista.

I think that downgrading from xp might get you into some troubles such as drivers since the life span of xp is nearing end. It might be good enough to consult and check your hardware if it has driver support for xp. I had one problem with that repair of mine that caught me. I never had the time to read it so I was stuck till to that point I read about the caution from its manual. I guess they are all manufacturing such devices without xp driver support now. But certainly you still install xp.

First of all tell me why do you want windows xp rather than vista, according to the operating system you can only able to upgrade your operating system and there is no provision of degration of operationg system, to degrade your operating system you need to format your operating system....which is quite complicated task but why do you need xp vista is cool and have various new features which you can't able to find in windows xp..

you want xp as an additional os or want only the xp os in your system. if only xp is required then i would like to know which laptop you have (brand) as some brands doesn't allow converting from vista to xp because of SATA HDD .. but before installing XP in another laptops you need to disable sata option in bias only then you can install XP.

I have a friend who has downgraded his vista to xp. It runs even faster and works even better in so far as performance is concerned, it has definitely improved. As you can see, vista is a bit heavy on the system. That is why he does not like it. He formatted laptop and installed the xp os instead of vista. Though you have to check from your supplier if the other hardwares will work if you do such thing in yours. I guess my friends knows his way around since he has knowledge on computer programming and repairing. Best to you!

Definitely as you might miss something in the middle of the setup and might end loosing every thing you got in that machine. Better have some reading before under going this downgrade whenever possible.

of course, you can by just buying a new operating system , delete the vista and install it. i heard a lot of grief stricken friends about the vista, it slows down the PC and it has a lot of things that you don't really need and the interface is not that user friendly.

First look at the makers web site and contact them if necessary, see if they supply downloads of the drivers for XP.
In my opinion, it will run better under XP, vista is rubbish
all the best urban

To your question, I believe many mylotters have provided you the solution.
Just to share with you my decision. I too had a new laptop on Vista. I too contemplated changing the OS to XP simply because I am more familiar with XP. However, Microsoft is phasing out XP. I finally decide to stick to Vista. It just need some adapting. Afterall the OS is just a platform. Its the applications I am more concerned. Most applications can run on XP well but new applications are being developed for Vista.

You will have to reformat your laptop (which is automatic when you install a new OS) - if it's still new and you don't really have any data on your laptop then this won't be a problem for you.
To reformat, just boot to your installer CD and it would be easy from there :)
Thanks for the response on my discussion!

yes you can change. but since you have bought a new laptop, there is one little problem. most laptops nowadays comes with a vista ready hardware and they are providing driver updates for vista only. i can say this because i have also bought a new compaq laptop just 2 weeks ago and i too faced the similiar problem. the xp cd just could not recognize the hard disk. then i contacted hp customer care in the net where it is written that since it is a vista ready laptop i have to disable an option called native sata from the bios and force fully install xp. although i do not know what will happen after that. so if you take my suggestion i would say that stick to vista. it is not that bad after all only it is resource hungry. but the plus point is that you can have direct x 10 with it which enhances graphics quality. for any other assistance you may consult the website of the manufacturer. trust me it works. by the way what is the brand of your laptop? and what is the configuration? if the ram is 2gb vista will run as smooth as anything.

You can't just change it.
Downgrading doesn't exist.
You can install winXP next to win vista. Or you can just take backup (on other disk) of everything you don't want to lose. And then format your pc and install xp on it.

I don't know if your current operating system, vista can be deleted and replaced by windowsXP. XP is easier to use than vista. Try to explore the new features of vista and you can adapt later and save effort rather than installation of operating system... =)

With the new computers and notebooks that are available at the moment, I would not recommend it. You could have a lot of problems if you think of downgrading.

yes,it's possible.you just reformat the hard drive and install the program.
just make sure if that windows you were using previous don't have drivers specifically for the laptop on it.otherwise, you'll have to get copies of those
for when you reinstall it or it may not run.

I must say, people overrate downgrading. It is true that technically, downgrading is impossible, what I think you need to do here is have an install of Windows XP instead of Vista. First of all Start by downloading all the drivers(namely Audio Drivers, Graphics Card, Ethernet, Bluetooth, Wireless Card,Touchpad, Memory CArd REader) from your manufacturers site for your model. Once you're done with that, you need to format the drive with Vista, pop in the XP CD boot from it and install it on the drive where you installed Vista. After that, install the drivers for XP. Now pop in the Vista DVD that your manufacturer gave you or just get a new one, pop it in and install Vista on a Fresh New Drive.
This way you'll have a fresh install of Windows XP and Vista both running on the same laptop. Now for those who don't understand why someone would want an ""Obsolete"" Xp running, it is because many older devices donot have drivers for Vista, mainly because they have been discontinued by the manufacturer. These will run fine on Xp but not on Vista. eg: Many USB to Serial Interfacers, Old phones like MotoKrzr(you don't have the com port drivers), p2k software won't work either.
Also if you want to keep the current install of Vista as is, there is a more complicated process. If you don't mind starting over, the above process is perfect for you

You can do it just insert the XP CD and boot the Laptop from that CD you can install the XP operating system. I personally feel that VISTA is better than XP because your Laptop maker has suggested it for that configuration.
You have to remove VISTA completely and install XP because you can't install XP when VISTA is already in the hard drive so i suggest you to format the drive completely and install XP.

Hi Muru,
If you are having CD of windows XP, you can install it. But you required not only cd of operating system but all software cd. To install Windows XP you have to format that drive in which Operating system installed.so before starting installation , back your important data into other drive. You might be aware about "How to install Winodws Xp", if not reply me.Best luck and have a good day!
