Are you a leaper or a dragger?

Just in case anyone's wondering whether I've lost the plot YET again, I'm talking about getting up in the morning here! lol. Some people have this ability to leap out of bed when they wake up, all fired up, full of energy and enthusiasm. Then of course there's the draggers, who practically need a team of wild horses to pull them from the bed and set them on their feet to start the day. Me? I'm definitely a dragger! I'm one of those people that doesn't sleep very well most nights, so I get maybe 5 or 6 hours on average. When the alarm goes off, I struggle to get the motivation to get up. 15 minutes later, I'm perfectly fine and raring to go, but that initial period is a real challenge! So what category do YOU come under then. Are you one of these leapers, or are you a dragger like me?

You are very lucky then! I'm amazed that the snooze button on my alarm clock hasn't eroded away yet when you consider how much I use it! I wish I could fall asleep earlier, but I've been trying for years and I just can't. It's like my body's always in a different time zone to my location or something! lol.

Based on what you've just shared llsling, unless you're also hooked up to an adrenaline drip, you're a dragger for sure!

jerrydzy, I'm interested in what (if anything) changed you from being a dragger to being a leaper. How do you change from one to the other? I feel like I'm inherently a dragger - like it's part of my personality, but I'd love to be able to make that change! What's your secret? lol!

Dragger! ... and grumbler. *she hangs her head in shame* Much like you in this reguard, actually. I don't sleep well at night, but after 15 minutes or so I'm awake and happy to be so. I battle insomnia and occassionally give into the dreaded 'sleep aid' just to get a good night's sleep. A few back-to-back nights of good sleep and I do wake refreshed, raring to go. Still not a leaper at those times. I sleep in a raised, four poster bed (that requires a step stool to get into) and leaping out of it before my first cup of java might be hazardous to my health.

Ooooooh AND a grumbler, excellent! Maybe you should make yourself a pot big enough for your head so those around you in the morning don't have to listen to it! lol. I'm not someone that even manages to get a few back-to-back nights either unfortunately and I definitely won't take 'sleep aid' as you call it. I do like the sounds of your bed too! As long as I get around 6 hours, I get through the day just fine, even if I do struggle to wake up at first.

I'm glad to hear that the pot's an unnecessary option then! I can appreciate that sleeping pills etc can be of benefit for severe cases etc, but the issue I have with them is that they don't actually put you into a deep R.E.M sleep, so large scale use will actually do more harm than good eventually. You taking them oinly occasionally is very wise. I much prefer the Hubby being around method for you though, I must admit! lol.

The large pot would be unnessisary. It is a well choreographed dance of avoidance that the familia and I perform until midway through my first cup of joe or the end of my shower, which ever comes first. I avoided sleep aides for years. My doctor talked me into them and I now see the benefit. I'm very particular about taking them only when the hubs is around to care for our son if something should come up while I sleep. He was away for a full week recently and I averaged about 3 hours of sleep a night. Just having him back in the house was all the sleep aid I needed for several nights.

I guess you have already figured out that I was a very good student. You know what, this is called narcissistic. Haha, sorry about that. Well, I used to get up very early in the morning listenning the VOA news. As you know, English is my second foreign language. Anyway, I gotta find a way to learn it well. Then, being an early bird, that was how I and most other English learners dealed with it. If you visited my campus, you could find that there were English learners reading English everywhere. However, since my English is sort of Ok now, I think I need more sleep. It is just that it is not a big deal anymore for me to communicate with any native speaker. Notwithstanding, to be honest, my English accent is still kind of weird. For reasons,it is sort of American accent, sort of Chinese accent, sort of Japanese accent, sort of Korean accent. First, my university English teacher was an American. So, you know where my American accent came from. Hmmmm, I am a Chinese and the Chinese English accent is inbred. Also, when I was a small kid, I learned some "strange" English from my Japanese grandpa. Finally, in my freshman year, my best friend was a korean. Koreans really spoke awful English. We had to mix Chinese, English and Korean together when we talked with each other. There was a saying. One who keeps company with the wolf, will learn to howl Oh my gosh, this response was so chaotic. Hope it didn't confuse your mind so much.

Narcissistic? You know what happened to Narcissus for that term to exist yes? Given all the people that have influenced your English learning, I'm not surprised that you have a weird accent! My own is kind of weird too actually. It's sort of half Australian and half British; and then you'll find a few other twangs thrown in because I've been living overseas for a few years now. Even my own family back home keep telling me that I speak differently now! Anyways, no I didn't get confused with your response at all, so off you go and HOWL and I'll see you again soon no doubt!

Did you ever see "The Great Race"? Remember the scene where Max says, "hey professor, rise and shine"? And the professor replies, "rise and shine? RISE and SHINE??? You rise. You shine." That's my favorite scene in the entire movie. Can you guess why? :-)

I've seen this movie, yes! It was very funny. Mid 60's I think was when it was made? Jack Lemmon, Tony CUrtis..... I don't remember that exact scene you shared though to be honest. And to take a guess why you love this scene, it's either because you're a leaper, OR, you've always wanted to shine shoes for a living?

I am always awake anymore way before the alarm goes off. Then I just lay here and watch it till it does. Still I wouldn't consider myself a leaper exactly because I don't get right up. It's not my job to get these kids ready for school and I refuse to do it. I call there Momma and get her up to do it. When everyone is ready to go then I start my 'taxi' run that gets everybody off to where they need to be.

Is there a third variety of those like having to be kicked all the way out of bed ? . I guess that puts me in the dragger category. The alarm is on, it rings, i shut it off and back to sleep in a wink. On most mornings , my dad then knocks on the door and asks " Dont you have to go to the office ? " and then it's Huh"- Isnt today a holiday ? It's not. One more shout from him and atleast my eyes are all open. It's probably because i sleep late. Just cannot get myself to sleep early.

We could embrace the Heinz mentality and come up with 57 varieties if you like! Thankfully I do eventually drag myself out of bed after a few snooze button wrestles, but there have been times in the past when my alarm either didn't go off or I didn't hear it and then I receive a phone call asking where I am! It's the absolute worst when this happens because I rush to get out the door and leave the house still half asleep. Thankfully this doesn't happen often! I'm a late sleeper too by the way, so it's no surprise at all that I'm like this in the morning.

You do appear to be very lucky in this regard, yes. The thought of arising at 5:45 AM is horrifying to me! lol. But I also don't fall asleep until around 2 AM most nights, so this would explain these feelings! I get up at 7 AM on most days and an hour or so later on the weekends. If I was able to fall asleep earlier, I'd be very happy, but I just don't seem to be able to.

Yes, 3 hours is very short and I only get around 6 myself also on average. But we're all different and if this is how your body works best, then so be it! They say the older we get, the less sleep we require too, so given the way I'm going, by the time I'm 50 I'll never sleep at all!

Hahaha.... I am out and out a dragger in capitals. I just cannot jump out of my bed even when I have to keep up an early appointment. My alarm keeps snoozing for 2-3 times before it actually force me out of my bed. I can drag on and on and on till forever. But since that's not feasible (I do reach office in time), I really struggle to open my eyes wide.

No doubt about it...I'm a dragger. I force myself up and I need coffee...2 at least & then force myself to that shower. Then I'm usually awake enough to keep going. The key for me is to NOT sit down after that shower....get dressed & do my hair & then I run out and grab a iced Dunkins coffee. Takes about an hour tops and then I'm good for hours and hours....actually...hyper. I work nites and so get about the same amount of sleep as you do. I insist on getting up early tho....don't want to waste my days sleeping....plenty of time for that when I die. the worst thing I do is on occasion, I get dumb and think that even tho I shut the alarm off, I can shut my eyes for just 5 more mins. That NEVER works! I'll wake up 3 hours later...angry at myself.

I need the coffee and shower too otherwise I just don't feel human. The WORST is when my alarm doesn't go off and I find myself rushing out the dorr without having the chance for either. Thankfully this happens rarely because I end up feeling terrible all day. I've been sucked in by that "5 more minutes" scenario too!

Oh I'm like you, definitely a dragger. And a life-long one at that! I never seem to get enough sleep and find it so hard to get up and be enthusiastic about the day until I've had a shower and some kind of tea. My mum had such a job getting me out of bed to go to school when I was younger. She used to tell me to get up, but I kept falling asleep and dreaming that I'd got up and dressed. Only to be woken up again a few minutes later... I'd love to be one of the people who jump out of bed, and ideally get straight out of the house, to make the most of the whole day!

Welcome, fellow dragger! I've been this way for as long as I can remember too. It's a good thing that I'm able to force myself each day, otherwise I'd be in a world of trouble. It's not like I leave everything to the last minute and then rush either, because I do get up at least an hour or so before I have to leave for work. It's just the struggle to become alert and actually feel good about getting out of bed in the first place that I wish I could change! I'm yet to dream about being up and ready though! lol.

It takes a lot to get me out of bed in the morning. I have my alarm set for an hour before I have to get up so I can comfortably hit the snooze button several times each morning. My husband is the opposite. When his alarm goes off, he is up, no questions asked. If he isn't, he is sick. At least I know that even if I want to over-sleep, I won't because he will make sure I am up.

I'm pretty much the same, in terms of it taking a lot to get out of bed, but I don't set the alarm an hour prior to my actual get-up time. I maybe set it for 20 minutes before and then give the snooze button a daily workout! lol. And my Wife is usually just like your Husband and gets straight up. She doesn't leap as such, but she's up! Thank God she's not a leaper in the truest sense because this can be quite frightening for us draggers!

Everyone who sleep less then 5 hour are a dragger, include myself. I Like to stand up before 6:00 and see the light of morning, but it is barely impossible. The lights of city do not alow me to fall sleep before 11:00 pm. Most of time I go to my bed after 2:00 Maybe a sleep mask and a heard-slap may help , but i never try ^^

Welcome to mylot Fahrad! I usually average around 5 - 6 hours of sleep a night myself, so this explains my dragger status for sure. I do have a sleep mask too, but it really doesn't seem to make much difference to anything for me. Light isn't an issue in my room either, so I guess I have no real need for it. I never considered a slap though! lol. Maybe I'll try that one day.....

Neither. I usually always wake up and calmly sit up and scoot out of bed. I'm rarely bursting with energy at the start of a day, but lately I have felt rather...shall we say...awesome? lmao. And even when I feel tired, it's rare for me to drag myself out of bed. I don't like sleep. If it weren't for the fact that it's vital to my body's repairative process...I wouldn't do it. I've always considered sleep an extreme waste of time. So much to do, experience, learn about...in this world, and I waste my time eight or so hours a night doing nothing but allow my subconcious (who is a jerk, I tell you!) to play. I'm an insomniac, too. Partially because of that reason, but also because I've a very restless mind (ergo, the whole 'my subconcious is a jerk!')...but lately I've been getting better sleep because I've responsibilities that require me to be up without fail and without struggling against exhaustion.

Actually I'm not a huge fan of sleep either. Napping during the day on the weekends for example is something that I just won't do because apart from feeling like crap when I do this, I also don't wish to lose any of my day! I've often wondered how much I could do and learn if I never had to sleep. But yes, it's a necessary evil I supppose and all I wish is that I could wake up some mornings and actually feel fantastic about it immediately rather than have to take a while to warm up.

For the most part, I'm more of a leaper than a dragger, James. I've been told that I'm just entirely too cheerful in the mornings and more than once. Actually, I've been told that I'm entirely too cheerful ANY time of day. There are folks out there that react very strongly to that type of personality and often, it seems, will react to it quite negatively, even dismissively. But if they see more of me, they usually end up liking me. I guess that leaping can be quite startling, dontcha think? But once a leaper, always a leaper. But not a graceful leaper, James. I think I'm more of a Lucille Ball leaper. In any case, it's great to talk at ya, darlin. Thanks for the discussion!!!!

I suppose in this case I'm a leaper. I have 2 1/2 year old and an almost 7 month old. I'm up with the baby in the night for diaper changes and bottles, then up early in the morning when they both are ready to get up. I don't have a choice but to be a leaper. Though, there are times I truly wish I could be a dragger. I mean, just once, would it be nice to stay curled up in bed lol. Though, even in my younger days I never stayed in bed. I always was up and at 'em. I love to be active, so I generally am up doing something. It's funny because I'm a night owl as well, but manage to get up each morning early-always have been. However, I should qualify it all by saying I definately need my tea or coffee in the morning. Namaste-Anora

It cetainly helps to be a leaper when there are small children involved! But as you've shared, it becomes a forced role a lot of the time. Your status is quite similar to mine in the sense that I too am a night owl, but manage to get moving every morning regardless. I've gotta have that coffee in the morning too otherwise I'm zombified for quite some time. lol. Let's hope you get to be a dragger more when your children get a little older.

When I say "leaper" I'm talking about how we get out of bed in the morning! I'm a dragger because I have to drag myself out of bed, yet these lucky leapers are all full of energy every morning, so of course LEAP out of bed to face the day! I'd love to be a leaper, but this status has evaded me for years unfortunately. Your attitude towards not dragging things out is a good one to have though!
