It has always been banned here in India. We were never allowed to carry outside food stuff into the theatres. And now with the multiplex culture, we all the more dont need to take food into the theatres. I dont find the need and the logic to carry the food in. Whether they are doing it to increase their sales or for security, how does it matter. When I am watching the movie I love the snacks that is provided there. There have always been a good choice if you end up going to a good theatre. If yes one goes to a really cheap theatre then maybe the snacks at the counter is bad.

I haven’t come across this here in Calcutta yet, but if this thing catches on its sure to come here too. They are doing this to increase their sales of course. The last time I went to watch a movie (I don’t go often anymore) I bough mutton patties, finger chips, Frooti and a chocolate. Each of the items was priced at least Rs. 10 to 15 more than what is charged outside. So for the four items, I ended up paying about R. 50 more. There was nothing I could do really with my son right beside me and hankering for everything being sold (as if he was fasting for the past one week) but its really exasperating…after all money doesn’t grow on trees and we are middle-class office going people, we don’t have any extra black money to splurge like that.

I think its both. It is pretty obvious that cinema viewers are starting to slow down and they have to make sure that they have other means to increase their sales. And banning outside food is another means to gather enough revenues for the cinema owners.
For security reason, because I have known that in my locality where bomb threats are a common thing that say they carry weapons and hid it from the foods taken from outside because security seldom checks this items when they enter the cinema.

Thats why I go to drive-in you can bring half your house and no one cares plus we can talk and relax. I dont mind if people bring sweets and things like that but given the choice they will bring half a chicken and take away. I would hate to sit next to someone who is munching all the time expecially if it smells. I dont have an issue with them banning food.

Of course they are doing it for profit and not for security reasons. how could food brought from outside pose security risks? It is their way of compelling people to buy from their own concessionaires as they have no other option.

It is right! People are not allowed to bring even water bottles in a stadium for any sport. Same is with metros cinema theater. If they wouldn't ban on it then terrorists can make a bomb blast even inside the theater and many inocent people might die! Dn't you think.
nevertheless, I don't go to cinemas at all these days. My eyes don't allow me to watch them in complete darkness!

Hi! Riya!
Many of the cinema halls, specially in multiplex complexes do not allow outside food at all, so much and so that they do not allow you to bring your own water bottle. You are supposed to buy water bottle from their canteen. It feels very disgusting to me when I am forced to buy a water bottle by shelling out Rs.20/- for the same. If they allow me to bring my own water bottle, I can save that much amount. They also sell all the snacks, cold drinks at exorbitant prices and when you are inside, you have no option but to buy stuff from their shops only. It is a kind of blackmailing, but what to do, you can make yourself understand about such things and can restrict yourself, however, if you are with your kids and they demand something, you cannot make them understand about the exorbitant prices, you will have to buy the snacks for them.

Oh yes, kids
Daal chawal the tho and they are never interested, take them to a snack stall and it seems we parents hardly give them anything to eat…they are sooooooooooo hungry for everything!
And regarding these plexes Deepak, they really leech us. I mean they should rather subsidize the items coz they are getting so many captive customers under one roof and their sales are bound to be good. But no, everything has to be passed on to the end users i.e. US.

Hi! Sudipta!
You have exactly stated what was in my mind. Kids won't enjoy simple Dal chawal, and home made vegetables, they are happy with maggi noodles, Momoos, Chooley Bhaturay, Samosas, Burgers, Pakoras, French Fries and ice-creams. I also face the same problem.
Yes, it is quite true the moment they see snacks in a ciname hall or at such places they start feeling more hungry.........(as we do not feed them anything at home)
You are right multiplexes just milk us, knowing fully well that we have no other option, but to agree to our kids demands.
Even tickets are so costly in these kind of halls and if you are forced to spend money on cold drinks and snacks too, your budget goes hay wire.
Deepak
P.S. - how are you?

I've never known a movie theater that would let someone bring in their own food. I've actually seen signs on the doors stating that outside food and drink was not allowed to be brough into the building. It might have something to do with keeping out the illegal stuff. It could also have something to do with keeping it so people will buy their foods from the concession stands. It's hard to say what these business people are thinking.

i would think it was definitely to raise their sales. they charge an arm & a leg here for a coke & a bag of popcorn or anything else that u buy. u can hardly afford to go to the movie anymore especially if you have a family to take. i'm glad i never go but i know there is alot of people that do & it's a good family outing.

I think, they do that for both security reasons and for profit. Of course if all the people inside the cinema will buy their food in the cinema canteen? it is a big income for them? how many people are in the cinema everyday? that counts a lot. I would say, this is their way to earn more. and am sure their food is more expensive than the outside vendors and the people who wants to eat will be forced to buy.

Hello my friend riyasam Ji,
I am sure that it would be their bussiness tacts. If they allow even water, this will
bring down their sale. So that is a point.
May God bless you and have a great time.

Hi riyasam
When i went to the cinema, i always take some popcorn and water. That is our rights, the cinema can not ban outside food and drinks. In fact, the law can not be allowed. So i think the activity of the cinema is just considering to increase their own sales, not for security reasons.

It has always been that way here in quebec, the canteens are there to make money if people bring in food from the outside then they are not making money. People still smuggle some stuff sometimes because it is just too expensive.

I am in the Philippines. Its been a long while that I have watched the big screen. Though I have never brought any food item that I bought from outside the cinema. Usually I always buy it at the booth near the ticket area. But I think, there are no restrictions. In our place we can always bring food for snacks when entering cinemas. I don't think it matters where we buy it from. I do not know if the policies have already change. But for me, I think they have no right to stop you from bringing snack foods bought from outside the cinema area. But considering that the it is a private cinema, they have the option to do that. Most likely they are losing and would want to gain from that aspect.
