Is believing in superstitions affecting the development of a country?

I guess belief in superstitions has been adversely affecting the society since long. Traditional and superstitious beliefs have suppressed the value of science and technology. A country is judged according to its scientific development not on the basis of its cultural entities or superstitious thoughts. People who follow the superstitions blindly depletes the value of science and technology. I guess education plays an important role in fighting superstitions and irrational beliefs.

Atheistic evolution/Darwinism has never held any appeal for me, though it's pretty much its own religion to those who blindly follow this particular theory.
