Human Crucifixion during Lenten season: Agree or not?

Philippines
April 8, 2009 1:28am CST
It's Lenten season again, and some Catholics are willing to be crucified like Jesus Christ. According to them, they believe that it is some sort of asking for forgiveness or saying Thank you. Personally, I don't agree with them. But I do respect and admire everyone who have a strong faith to his religion, Christians or not. How about you? No hurting words please.

I don't mind them, but I won't do it myself though. I've always been a believer that anyone has the freedom of expression in terms of religion. As long as you don't force yourself or your beliefs on someone else. It's their expression of their faith.

It is one short but meaningful message.

They have to be the dumbest people ever. Crusification isn't a form of forgiveness, its torture for people who go against a Church. Jesus went against the Romans and the Emperor and was Crusified for being and individual.

Actually, I think Philippines is the country in Asia that considers Christianity as a major religion. This tradition as I said is only in the Philippines.

Wait, i didnt know Philipines were Christian? or even had churches there. or were even that devoted to Christianity. To be forgiven, you must have done something bad. So these people mustn't be good christians if they went against law in the first place or did a bad deed. Pain is not an emotion to play with.

i agree with you, i respect them too. but i dont agree with them doing that. its like proving to the world that they can do that too. i mean, that for me is a sacred thing so they can do the passion of the Lord but just dramatized not out doing or copying it entirely. though i have to admit i like watching like that during the lenten season.

I agree that crucifixion is not doing anything for these poor misguided folks. And I do feel that it may even border on a mockery of the original crucifixion of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus. Inflicting pain upon one's self doesn't do anything but bring attention to what you have done. We don't need to apease God - just ask forgiveness, invite Jesus into our hearts, and then believe and thank Him for "His" finished work for us, and live as a testimony to His selfless life and great love for humanity. Never mind religion. Just draw close to the Lord, and live as He would want you to. Have a great Easter (Resurrection) Holiday C. C.

What's crucifixion in the first place?? I have not heard about it before.. hehe ^_^ Just to divert a little, i dun even know about the difference between a catholic and christian.. lol =D So anything regarding that religion, i'm really very much ignorant about them.. haha =D All i know for christians, there's a process of 'baptis' (i think spelling is wrong).. And for catholics, crucifixion does it mean the same thing too??

That's quite confusing huh.. hehe ^_^ But all i know is that, what u said about christians are true.. They always like to live by the bible and always quoting things out of it.. haha =D I dun mean any disrespect, but for a person without religion like me, i find it quite annoying.. hehe

Hi fatherblogger, thanks for letting us know about such an important thing.Well,I also think it is good to have faith in your religion and that gives you inner strength. But,what these people are doing or planning to do is inhuman.Jesus Christ will never be happy with this.I am not a christian but I believe every religion says the same thing and that is above all,it is best to love human, god reside within them.

I think almost all religion has some rituals that are absurd, but still a lot of members are doing it. This is because of their strong belief that what they are doing is right.

Crucified? Wow. I never heard of this. I have heard of 'passion plays' which are skits or shows where a person is tied to a cross to show the audience what it was like to be Jesus, but that is a play or a scene and not real life. I would think that anyone willing to be crucified would be pretty mentally ill in the head. It isn't a natural thing to want to suffer that much, it seems pretty twisted, why would God want you to do a thing like that? These people sound like fanatics.

Actually, this tradition is Only in the Philippines and has been known worldwide for decades. This is not a play or drama, but their hands are really being holes by huge nails just like Jesus Christ suffered. For us Filipinos, it is natural to see them live especially in the Northern part.

I am a Catholic but I don't agree that people have to be crucified in order to express their faith. I do think that you are endangering your health unnecessarily. God wants us to take of our body not to endanger it.

I too think that its great to have strong faith in god and religion but I think that being nailed to a cross is extreme. I think that a person can be forgiven or say thank you to jesus or god without having to cause themselves physical harm.

I don't really encourage it, although the practice is tolerated here in the Philippines. Out of the million Catholic devotees, I think only a fraction does it, although in very particular places. Here in our city, I have not seen nor heard of human crucifixion, although I want to see it in person just for curiosity's sake. I am not really for it because we can always share in the suffering of Christ in a lot of other ways, through corporal works of mercy, fasting, meditation, etc. I read that the Catholic Church does not really approve of it...however, the "Panata" has already been ingrained in some of our people's culture, so it's really difficult to just stop it totally.

A Huge NO for this act. Christianity overacting is evident when one person allow himself be crucified by humans. It doesn't make any sense especially to people who are not doing what is right for the rest of the months before Lenten have come. And now they look at it as an act of piety Jesus would admire. NO, this is not Christianity for me. They are just showing religious rituals/practices [only on holy week] that somehow very amazing when others look at them like dramatizing Jesus sacrifices for all of our sins. After doing so, back to normal practices again. It is gruesome to see blood flowing from the flesh of those who wanted to be crucified during Lenten. That is not what I think right thing to show as justification of our faith. I am not a religious person but I am building my strong spiritual tie with my Heavenly Creature through modest intercession like praying and thanking him. Do my charitable acts to those that deserve His mercy. Through doing what is good and follow our golden rules are essential. No such physical act of penance, blood is important. Our body is sacred! So if you trust God don't hurt yourself materially to be forgiven of the sins we committed.

I believe there's nothing wrong with it. Even those who walked barefooted, hitting their backs, swollen with blood. That's their way of asking for forgiveness. The only thing that I don't want about it is when after the crucifixion, they all go back to their old bad habits. That's something unacceptable. They are just making their sacrifices void.

human crusification during lenten season i agree for that because that's one way to remember that our God save for us and God die for us in our sin's.

I don't agree with em too. Although its remarkable for a person to have that courage and strength to bear tremendous pains through crucifying for the sake of being forgiven by their god on all their sins, I think its much necessary to help other people who in need of help to live rather than be crucified to show their repentance of their sins.

Jesus Christ suffered for our sins so that we don't have to. Doing this is like throwing that back in his face.

I have seen this on the news in the last few years. I am not sure what the purpose is. Jesus did this many years ago so we would be saved from our sins. I think if they feel led to do it though then they should. I couldn't imagine this myself. I can't stand the sight of blood (especially my own, :)

I don't agree with human crucifixion, but they could do it if they like because this is a free country where everyone has the right to do what he/she wants. I think there are other ways you can do during lent.

I think faith is a very sensitive topic. These people who willingly have themselves crucified believe that they are sharing Jesus' suffering when he was crucified - that they are helping him bear it. We can't really say that "that's in the past and you can't possibly share his suffering" because in every Consecration in the Sacrament of the Eucharist, Jesus gives himself up - it's not merely a sign, it's a transfiguration happening then and there. However, I would like to reason out with them that there are other ways to relive Jesus of his "suffering". Because I don't really think that he's "suffering" physically. What I think bothers God more is the many sinners hurting his children and hurting themselves. If only these "salibatbat", these penitents, decide to live a better life from then on then that would be a better gift to Jesus. However, I've heard that many of these people go back to their old sinful lives after their penitence - as if they were simply buying Jesus's forgiveness with physical suffering. Faith has to be more than that... Thanks for the response on my discussion!

i think this is some thing that was meant for jesus to experience not every one else . i guess this does not seem so right to me.jesus did this for our sins . so what are they doing it for ? this is not meant for them to act out the way they want it to be . none of us will ever be able to compare to what happen on that day it should be left the way it was meant to be.i just do not get it.

human crucifixion is rubbish, all those who do it just pretend to be like Christ, and assume that the things done by Christ can be done by anyone on this earth. i total disagree with the concept of human crucifixion. the people who do it are total insane
