Feeding your pet

I have several pets to feed everyday. I have 8 Koi Fishes which I feed twice a day and I have two puppies I feed too. I don't have problems with my Koi Fishes because I know exactly the amount of feeding I have to give them, the store keeper told me that I should watch how long they can finish the meal, if it lasts longer than 5 minutes then it means I'm overfeeding. So, with a lot of years feeding them, I can now estimate how much I'd feed them. On the other hand, with my puppies, I have no idea. It said in the dog food packet to feed them about half a cup (they're about 2month old more or less) but it seems they're always hungry. Is it normal that they do that? I feed them twice a day. A friend of mine told me that if puppies had their way, they'd eat up the whole sack in one eating. Is it true? I have noticed though that after feeding, they'd sleep (at night) but whenever it's morning they'd go crazy early dawn and go frantic when I feed them. Does this mean I don't feed them much? I don't want to overfeed. Any tips?

I have 2 dogs & 2 cats. I've always put dry food down for my dogs that I leave out for them all day. That way they can munch whenever they feel like it. I've NEVER had a dog that ate himself into obesity. If I had ever had a puppy that was eating too much, I wouldn't have left the food down. Puppies usually fall asleep right after eating at night. Also, they are ALWAYS excited in the morning. It's not because they are hungry. They are extremely happy to see you again. You give them love, you give them food....so you are GOOD in their eyes & they are happy you're back!!! As long as your puppy is growing & happy, I wouldn't worry about the food. I always read what the package said. If it said 1/2 cup per day, I'd put the 1/2 cup in a bowl & sit it down where I wanted him to eat. The ONLY time I've had a problem with my dog eating too much was when I adopted the second dog. My boy acted like if he didn't eat it ALL immediately, she was going to get some. I told him he could eat it when he wants to as that is his allotment for the day. Eventually I bought separate bowls for them. It took a few days but they now know whose bowl goes to who & they just eat their own food. They both nibble all day instead of gobbling it down in less than 5 minutes. Occasionally I give them canned food. I don't leave that down all day....they never leave any behind!!!

Oh, mine would just gobble everything up! Anyhow, when do you think is the best time to give them canned food? Is canned food really better?

Oh thanks for the tip! I'd be getting books soon so that I can take care of them more effectively.

I've never had a gobbler. I kept my guy on dry puppy food until he was 6 months old then I mixed his puppy with dog food a little at a time until I had switched him over to the dry dog food. My vet says to give him canned food whenever I can afford it. She seems to think canned food keeps his digestive system in better shape. He's an outdoor dog & I don't always know when he's pooped so I'm not seeing a lot of difference in his digestion of the food. I guess with the canned food it depends on how much meat & how much fillers as to how much better it is for your baby. Have you thought about getting library card & checking out a book on raising a puppy & the best way to do things??? My Wal~mart has little puppy books for about a dollar that explains the best things to do to keep your puppy healthy.

Ok, the amount you feed your puppies may be right depending on the size and type of puppy they are. I have a shih tzu that is only 4 months old and she eats 1/2 cup twice a day. She is high energy but small. The thing with puppies is that they will eat EVERYTHING you give them and sometimes what you don't :) They have not learned to stop eating when they are full. it is normal for puppies to sleep at night after eating and to be excited about the start of a new day with you in the morning. Don't sweat it. just follow the instruction so that you don't make them obese and cause health problems later. You are not starving them, i promise.
