Gas is over $2 a gallon again

Once again the price of gas is up over $2 per gallon again. I usually get about 5 gallons to get around each week though recently I have been driving more and needing to buy more gas. I find when the prices are lower I just buy a certain dollar amount but when the gas prices start rising then I only buy what I absolutely need in gallons. If I happen upon a station with a cheap price I will get more or top off what I have in the tank. How do prices affect your gas/petrol/diesel buying habits?

I was really liking it when the prices were coming down, it was like a receiving a present. I think in my area I saw it at 1.59 for lowest, THEN it started to go back up again but has seemed to level off at around the $2 mark. Saw it yesterday for 1.91/gallon. It should be lower as I heard a few days ago that crude oil is less than $50 per barrel. I so wish I could afford a hybrid or a more environmentally friendly car so I would be better for all of us and my pocketbook as far as fuel cost. I can't even afford a new car right now much less one that is better for the environment.

I have been contemplating getting one of those kits that you can use to retrofit your car for biodiese. The car will also run on regular diesel and you can swirch back and forth between the two fuel sources.

From what i hear from different economists and "future tellers" concerning oil and prices, they will go sky high in next few or so years. Prices, as we see them now, will in few years seem actually quite low.

I paid $1.98 yesterday, but it is going to get higher. The only reason gas went down from $4/gallon was because of the presidential election. Gas prices always drop right around the time of the election here in the U.S., but I look for it to get back up to $4/gallon before the end of the year. We may as well prepare for it, because the government is going to do absolutely nothing to stop it from happen, just the way the Bush administration (and I use that term loosely LOL) did nothing to stop it from happening the first time...

I had never noticed a connection between gas prices and elections. I did find a couple stations yesterday with plus for $1.95 - $1.98 so I will be going to those from now on.

I noticed that too. I kind of expected them to start that though (sneaking the gas price back up on us). What I don't understand is why the price of gas was going up when the price of crude oil was going down. I don't travel any more than I have to when the price starts getting too high. I can't afford it.

This is the only reason why living in a rural area is bad. No matter what the price of fuel is at the time, we have to buy it often in order to be able to go anywhere. I have a bad feeling that we will see the same gas prices this summer as we did last summer. It's not near there yet, but I'm sure it will be by July. We have to drive to town for groceries, household needs, work, etc.... The nearest town that offers a decent doctor's office is about twenty five miles away, so yeah, we do a lot of driving when we need something. We try to make it one big trip when we go, ie: groceries, bills, appointments; we try to do it all in one day if at all possible.

I guess I am fortunate in that there are a lot of places I can walk to for things that I need. I have a bike for places that are farther and I have a little electric scooter that I have used out of necesseity as well. But all those things don't work as well for you in bad weather.

i know. this is so incredibly disappointing as the lower prices were really helping me to save money and put it towards food and other essentials. i fear it will go back up to what it was and it is so hard to afford the gas at those higher prices. i know it is not necessary either and they do not have to raise them back up. it is a load of bull and we are the ones that pay the price.

I am afraid that one day the cost will be so high that I won't be able to afford to drive anymore.

Before I would only put a certain amount in no matter what. So it was usually fifteen dollars. But i find that cars get better gas mileage if you fill up. Its true for me at least. I find i spend way less if i feel up instead of putting so much in there every few days.

I have not filled up in a long time because I don't do that much driving and I usually just get what minimal amount I need until I can find a better price.

I work at a gas station. It is supposed to reach just a little over two dollars and stay that way. Time will tell. As it is ...it goes up and down pretty much every other day it seems. Sometimes it changes twice in a day. We no more than get everything changed over and they call and tell us to change it again.

I can't imagine what causes it to change that rapidly but we get the calls from the gas company on when to change the price and its usually only 2 or 3 cents and a lot of hassle to switch everything over.

I thought it was my imagination! I would get gas one day and the next moment it seemed the price had changed.

Because of the gas prices we have gotten into the habbit of only buying gas for necessities. We usually only use the car to get back and forth to work, grocery shopping, and taking the kids to school. Even when the prices went down, we've continued to limit our driving. For the most part we walk to the park or just take a walk around the neighborhood rather than driving somewhere.

It certainly makes you think about whether or not you want to go out very much.

We have no metro. There was talk of a monorail system at one time but it has not happened as of yet. Subway trains are not practical here.

i know the price of gas just will not stay at one level. they said that we were running low on supply but we all know that is just to get the money from us, like we do not pay taxes, no offinice to govornment workers that have anything to do with it. but anyways even with gas at $2.00 a gallon i still only pay $20 to fill up, but i also have a small car that is really good on gas. i guess the best way to beat gas prices is to get a smaller car if you can that is cheaper on gas.

My car is really good on gas also. I recently thought about the fact that I can go more than 20 miles on one gallon of gas and that I rarely do that much driving at once (that would be like 3 or 4 round trips from here to my farthest regular destination) so I really don't need to buy that much gas at one time.

It's funny that you mention buying gas by the dollar rather than by the amount. I think that gasoline is about the only item that we do that with. So far the gas prices haven't really changed my habits. I think that the 'Summer of $4+' has conditioned me to feel good about two dollar gasoline. I have heard several people theorize that the price hike was done purposely to make us 'happy' with higher prices in comparison. I do find it odd that the price of crude oil seems to drop on a weekly basis while the price of auto fuels is creeping upward. Who is benefiting from the spread, exactly? Things that make you go 'hmm...'.

That same $4 made me calm myself down at the pumps anywhere the gas had gone up after I realized anything under $2 was a steal in comparison. I have noticed that as I head north in the state the gas price drops which is weird since the refineries are not that far away.

I hate the gas prices nowadays. I need my car, because I need to drive 40 kilometres to work and the gas prices freaks me out. But as soon as the gas price is low I usually buy large amounts of gas so I do not have to buy when the price rises.

I need my car also. It gets me to work and places farther away and I am a ride for friends on occasion. It makes getting around in bad weather easier also.

Unfortuantely, I have to buy gas at last 2-3 times a week since my car is apart of my job. Gas prices does effect my driving habits since we don't drive as much sometimes when the gas prices are high. Although, as much as I hate to say it, we can't be complaining too much. Remember when we were paying $4/gallon? We were complaining then, and we're complaining again when gas is $2/gallon. We're never happy, are we? lol

I do remember. After Katrina it was hard to find gas at a reasonable price. My neighbor was commuting across the lake to work and carrying a bunch of gas cans with him so he could carry extra gas when he found a good price. I did something similar after Gustav because even when gas is available if there is no electricity the pumps don't work.

Well right now I am kinda of lucky I guess since I have no car but this is what I did when the gas went up and down. I would pump the same amount no matter what. For example if I am putting in say 20 a week that is what I would put in no matter what the price is. That way I was not spending more, or if I knew that the gas was cheap than I would fill up and than conserve what I had. That is how I did it. When the gas was like 5 dollars a gallon I would sometimes just put one gallon and hope it went down later so I could pump more. It was really almost like a game I guess. Now I am sad I can not drive but I am glad that I do not have to play the game all the time. Take care

I am careful about my speed and I have always tried to do all errands in a particular part of town to cut down on mileage. It just seems so prohibitive when the price of gas starts rising.
