While I was working in the hay field to a car drove buy really slow and when they got were you could not see them from the road they stop and trough out a full grown black Labrador retriever. The car was to far from me to get the license plate number so the only thing I could do was catch the dog. He seems to be very friendly. On my way home I stopped to talk to another farmer he seen the dog and like it so I let him have it. It all work out but I am still mad because I could not catch the people that dumped it. Why do people dump their dogs?

People dump their dogs for many reasons. One they can't afford the surrender fee. Two they are cruel and selfish. I mean I could make a list of excuses that these people come up with but I think you get the drift.
I have never condoned people to do this I have always been one if you can no longer handle the responsibility of you animal take it to a shelter or contact the breeder and see if the breeder will take you dog back and most will or you contact a rescue group that will be able to find your dog a home. Dumping dogs just caused more and more problems and hurts the family pet that has been faithful to you forever. grrrr. It really pis$es me off that people can't be responsible for thier actions. I'm glad that you were able to get a good outcome out of a bad situation.

People seem to think that when they dump a dog or cat that someone will pick it up and give it a home. I don't think they realize that most of these animals either start running in packs and killing other animals or get shot and killed by landowners who are protecting there live stock etc. I know I have ended up with a couple road side dumps in my life time and most of them have turned out to be really good dogs.

There is one answer to this and no one will be able to change my mind...
people dump their dogs because they are idiots. I don't care of the people can't afford the dog anymore, or can't physically care for it anymore...you don't DUMP a dog on the side of the road. First you look for another home for it, and after a while if that doesnt' work out and as a last resort you surrender them to a sheleter. There is NO excuse to simply dump a dog on the side of the road...they'll starve, be scared, lonely, etc...nothing good. At least at a shelter they can be cared for and safe from bad weather, etc.
It's really great that you were able to catch the dog and found a good home for him almost instantly! See how hard that was? Now why couldn't the dogs family do that instead of dumping him? They could have put up a sign "FREE DOG TO GOOD HOME!" Easy right?
Dog dumpers are idiots...pure and simple.

I totally agree with you, I think that dumping a dog is not even an option people should have, I don't see why it is so hard for somebody to go to a shelter and leave the dog in a humaane way if there's nothing else you can do to keep him, me and my husband have three dogs and a baby on the way and sometimes we think we should give one of them up, but just thinking of all the dogs in the shelter that are waiting for a home and when we see their face we just can't do it, andbwe are not in the greatest economical place but dogs really don't need that much, if you keep them healthy you don't have to spend so much on the vet and to spend 45 dollars for a 30 lb bag of food that lasts for a while is not that much, shampoos and toys and all that are things you can get slowly, I don't think is so hard...

Aww, well congratulations on the baby! And you're right, if you're lucky enough to have healthy animals then they don't cost a whole lot. Do you have large breeds or small breeds?

hmm i cant say i've ever "dump" off a dog before but i konw a couple ppl that has and it was for a few reasons and the dog liked being out side able to run and everything and it wouldnt eat food it'd rather catch it so they didnt like the stuff it'd bring back. but we have drop'd cats off out in the country tho..well not me my dad has but thats like the ideal place for a cat tho cuz it can hunt mice and everything.. if we had any no kill shelters here my dad would take them to it, but we dont so thats what he does, unless we have extra money then we'll post a add in the news paper but we always ask friends if they want a pet first..
now i dont agree with it tho but its how it is..

Dumping a dog is really cruel! I cant see why anyone would want to do that. Ive had many puppies before but found them all homes. Its really sad that some people are struggling now with feeding their dogs but surely someone else would be willing to take it, though it is harder to give away an adult dog than a pup.

I've heard that a lot more people are dumping their dogs nowadays because they don't have all the money to pay for it. Food, vet bills, basic upkeep etc. can be expensive for dogs. But a lot of times its just people having that feeling they want the animal because its cute at first but never really thinking about how much work and effort it is going to take to raise the dog. People just need to be more mindful about it. Its a sad thing and its never going to stop and the worse part of it all is a lot of humane shelters are filling up so the dogs are being placed in pounds where if they aren't adopted in a few days they get put to sleep.

People who dump any animal to fend for itself on the street are heartless and I hope there's a special place in He11 for them. Of course, this is how we got our little dog as far as we know. She appeared on our street one day and hung around our gate for the most part. That night we took her in. We live in a small neighborhood outside of a small town so if she had wandered off the owners would have put up a notice at our *one* grocery store or at the post office. We asked around our neighborhood but no one was missing a dog and no one seemed to be looking for her so I believe she was dumped.

The owner probably couldn't feed him so they figured a nice farmer would catch him and find a nice home for him. j/k
Yeah, most people don't care about their animals. I don't understand why people even want them. You know what? Their kid probably pestered them for one so the parents went out and bought the biggest dog they could find. The parents probably didn't know the first thing about dogs. They probably even expected their kid, maybe only 6, to take care of it. A few years go by, they didn't train it properly and the dog is pissing on the rugs. The dog got too big because they didn't understand the puppy would grow into a large dog. They call the dog dumb, kick it. It's their fault they didn't train it. However, they develop a hate for the animal because they are morons. Now they don't care if the dog is gone or not. They just want the dog out of their hair.

People do not care anymore about anything. We have 8 dogs that people either abused or abandon and it is a sad thing. We have one dog that we found in the woods last year,he was so skinny and afraid of everything it would have mad anyone sad. When we took him to the vet he said he was 20 pounds under weight and that he was properly abandon for over 8 months. That poor dog must of been scared all the time.He is now at the weight he is saposta be and is starting to trust everyone and not as scared as he once was

This is sad buddy. I treat my dog as if it were a member of my own family. How could a person do such a thing? Leave a dog to starve and without shelter. If that person was able to do that to a dog, that person could probably do that to one of his friends or family. The dog was lucky because you were there to save him, cheers to you pal!

It's terrible! I live in a rural area where people love to dump their dogs. There are two that have taken up here and it is sad. I think that with the bad times, a lot of people are moving due to forclosure and it has gotten worse. People who love their puppies and dispose of them when they age are sorry.

Most of the people who are doing that kind of stuff might not be responsible pet owner, maybe they had it before just for the sake of having one and later on they got tired of it and just leave it alone instead of having it impounded and let it adopt by others. I think those people are greedy and selfish.

i think it's because they are simply irreflective... i mean anyone who understands what will happen to a home dog back in the 'wild' and does it, is just cruel, and i still refuse to think that people are that mean.
you, however, are a good soul! thank heavens you saw that dog, or the poor thing would have been in serious trouble.

I'm guessing alot of people get a puppy or kitten and forget that they will turn into a dog or cat and the older they get, the harder they are to take care of.
I really don't know the answer to your question. I always end up with 'drop offs' all the time and always try to find homes for them. The bad thing is, most of the animal shelters around here are usually full, I've given everyone I know a pet if they were able to take one/take care of one (or two) but the worst part of it is that usually these animals are pregnant. finding a home for a dog or cat is hard enough......finding a home for 6-8 puppies/kittens is the hardest part.
