"An alcoholic is always an alcoholic." Do you agree or disagree?

I would like as many opinions as possible about something.
I recently heard someone say “An alcoholic is always an alcoholic, even if they are dry for years.”
Do you think that’s true? What about drug addicts? Do you think a person can be addicted to drugs, even if they don’t use anymore?
Can a person be addicted to drugs or alcohol, even if they stopped using entirely? How long does someone have to be “clean” before you would consider them addiction free?

Hmm... I both agree and disagree. Because some can really control it. Some has discipline to stop. And some, well, they say they will but they haven't stop for like ages. Hehehe.

I tended to believe this as well, till a couple of friends who i knew to be alcholic for over 15 years gave it up and refuse to touch it again. They have been through tough times, they sit with friends who drink, but just do not get tempted at all to touch the stuff. They maintain a good exercise regime , eat healthy food and have changed thier lifestyle completely.
