My Red Star Is Gone!

I'd like to take a moment to remind all of you how the rating system is suppose to work. If I'm wrong, please correct me, but this is how i perceive it to be. When someone gives a good reply to a discussion, I always rate them positively, even if it's something I don't agree with. As long as it's a well thought response it deserves a positive because they participated the way mylot designed.
Now, I had a nice red star with a number 9 in it. It's not the top rating but I liked it and it fit me. Now i have this yellow star. It's not my color, but I suppose it fits the upcoming holiday. lol.
I never give short response to people. well, unless I'm responding to people that commented on my discussions, or lets say I responded to a topic, and then someone commented on my comment, I may then respond with 1 or 2 sentences. That's only because I've said all i could say and there's nothing more to add.
For those of you who get mad at people's opinions, calm down and breathe before slamming down on the mouse to give a negative. lol. Have you ever done that? Gotten so mad at someone elses thoughts that you rated them negatively, or maybe you simply didn't agree with them?
I don't know how the rating system calculates, but i've had the red star for a long time now. Within the past 5 hours it has managed to go down. It seems to be easy for it to go down, but hard move up. How many negatives does it take to lose a rating?

Nothing wrong with yellow and remember that it takes all colours ro make a rainbow.
If Idisagree with a person's opinion Ido not rate them negative.Everyone has the right totheir own opinion and I admire those who state their opinion, especially when it is different from taht of the majority. That takes courage
I do sometimes rate negative but not because I disagree. I rate negtive when I report someone for plagiarising (copying form elsewhere and pretending it is theirs) and when I report over and over again for posting ref links. I can't rate postive for someone who goes against their rules.
Do you think that's right?

I think I know what you mean about the referral links. Just yesterday a newbie kept posting the same post over and over about a make money site. are there bots on this site? lol. I like different opinions, too. I like to know what others think on things, and just maybe their opinion might make some sense to me and i just might end up agreeing with them.

It could be a couple people that troll the site and look for people to pick on. Well, what comes around goes around because if they dole out too many negative ratings it does come back on them and they lose some of their own rating power. The numbers don't have anything to do with "rating power" but the lower someone is on the number scale the less of a kick they have when they are giving out negative or positive ratings. If someone goes around constantly rating things negatively then they will slide down the scale quickly. Sometimes people have nothing better to do than to belittle others, that's the only way they can feel better about themselves. Look at it this way, an eight is better than a seven. I've had a nine for over a year now no matter how much I write or how many positive ratings I give out.

Freak--I don't think i've been trolled, yet. lol. I hope not. yes, you're right, an 8 is better than the lower numbers. I just don't want it to keep dropping. And, I also know that I'm not one to start giving short comments to people or babble about nothing related to the topic. I also don't target people or stomp on others about their ideas.

Busyb4--
I'm not sure if it affects your pay, but the lower your rating the less likely people will listen to you(sometimes). If you're not getting many responses it seems it would lower your pay, only because you're not intereacting positively to the site.
I'm not too upset over the star change. I just know that I didn't do anything that went against mylot rules...and if I do so I hope people will be kind enough to correct me so I won't do it again. I don't fear constructive critiscm. Just delete the namecalling before posting. LOL

Well, I see that you only have 250 posts under your belt. Since the 'Discussion Rating System' is a percentage thing, it is more common for someone with few posts to go up and down like a yoyo. When you have more than a thousand, it takes more 'negatives' or 'poritives' to affect it.
I have also noticed that, when you make a lot of discussions/responses at once, your rating seems to go down temporarily. I long ago learned that the colour star somebody has says very little about them except that they haven't posted anything controversial (yet). Soemtimes a low star rating means that they are really people with whom I'd rather not be associated but more often it indicates that they are outspoken (and therefore people I might tend to identify with).

I didn't know about the percentage thing. Maybe all the responses at once haven't been rated yet, and can a non-rating effect your status? hmmm.

Hi Starangel. I also only have an eight rating. I suppose that i could have a higher rating if I always agreed with other people here on Mylot, but I want to be an honest person and say what I really think and feel. I think that it is important to be honest in my answers. I rarely give anyone a negative, even when I disagree with them. I hope that your rating will go back up soon. I really do not know how this rating thing works. What does it take to get a higher or a lower rating? By the way, I gave you a positive rating on your discussion. Albert

Of course! honesty is the best policy. lol. You know, they're being honest with their thoughts, so why not accept everyone else's honest opinion. however, there have been times when I've stated facts, and people got upset over that.
thanks for the positive! lol. You have gotten one, too. :D

Star-
As Diana stated so eloquently, join the club. This has been something that has been quite hurtful to me since joining Mylot, and something I took for a time very personally as I couldn't figure out why I was going down so quickly in the popularity contest. The fact is, I post long threads, long responses (unless I'm ill), and I post my honest thoughts without being mean but my honest thoughts. Some people just can't handle it.
As someone mentioned you thread count is still very low and you're in a good spot at 8, and I assume the more you respond that your star will quickly go up. Areas I tend to avoid when I want my star to not be so targeted, as you will, is politics and religion. That tends to the areas I notice people are quite quick to react out of opinion differences.
I typically give positives to those who have answered the question, even if it is not as lengthy as I would write. Some people can say what they want to in a very short space. And as most have mentioned, I never give a negative just because someone disagrees with my point of view. I reserve that for people who name call.
Just take the advise of those who have been with Mylot for a long time, and you're star will soon fade to the background of why you are here in the first place.

yea. i'm still getting use to the functions of mylot. I try to understand how it works. Like i can post the same amount in 2 days, and I'll get 4 cents for one day and then 30 cents for the next day. I'm not here for the earnings, i just don't see how they figure things out. Maybe someone sits at the pc and just throws cents at people....and i wonder how many people have that job. hmm...whoever is reading this i want the person that throws 30-40 cents at a time.

Hello there my friend!
Changing colors of star ratings or decreased ratings here at Mylot do happen and likewise experienced by almost everyone here. Like you, I have experienced it, though the difference is that from 92 rating then went low to 86. The red color star did not change anyways and am grateful with that. At first, I was mad and felt bad because I know I have not given anyone a negative rating even if the respondent to my discussion or who commented to my response gives a rude answer or contrary to my opinion.
I believe more of a good karma that is why I never give a negative rating. However, it happened to me perhaps not only once. Someone may have given me a negative response because of my contrary opinion. Yet, am in good faith that I consider every discussion an open opinion which other members should not take it personally or offensive.
Nonetheless, we cannot please everyone, thus we do not think similarly. There are people who are sensitive to others' opinions and some are closed-minded and onion-skinned and pathetic.
You are right my friend. Our ratings decreases due to negative ratings. But, do not get affected as long as your earnings don't decreased by such. Just continue what you think is right and proper and just keep on sharing your thoughts whether it be agreeable to contrary from others' opinion. What matters is that you are sensible enough and that you are not violating any rules of Mylot.

I didn't know about more numbers to look at. I see alot of people talking about it. I'm trying to make sense of it. Yea, I'm not too upset over it. I just don't care for immaturity and i also couldn't figure out how the ratings all worked. I don't think my earnings could decrease anymore, unless they just stop paying altogether. lol

If only it were that simple, that if someone gives you a bad rating, the next day someone will respond and give you a plus but it does not work that way. What usually happens is the one who gave you a minus also replies to others on the post and when you comment on his horrible reply, he replies again and gives you a negative. Also if that person is extremely vindictive, he may go to your profile and negative all similar discussions you made or you responded to and get others to do like wise.
Now most of us do not go and plus all the discussions. Now maybe if when someone goes down in ratings, that we all go to their profile and rate every one of theirs plus it might even up the score, but no one thinks about that.

wow... how pathetic if people actually go through that trouble. I do like your idea, though. just have everyone come and rate positive on all that we've done. lol.

I'm sorry your star has dropped. There could be several reasons why this happens to users on here. However, I think the #1 reason is being involved in heated discussions. No matter how civil one is when they participate in such discussions their star seems to have a better chance to go down rather than to go up. At least this is what I've noticed before. Personally, I tend to avoid these kinds of discussions. It just isn't worth it to me.
I rarely ever rate anyone negatively. Even when they disagree with me. However, if they are cheating their way through here (such as copying other people's posts word for word and passing them on as their own) that's a different story.
Good luck in getting your red star back!

You know what, I think you just pinpointed where this all started. there have been quite a few political topics lately...especially about Obama. yes, i've replied to a few. I also replied to a religious topic. you know, sometimes those are the good ones, because it's about something that matters. Yes, it's a bit heated sometimes because people just can't stop making others believe like they do, but some people actually provide a wholesome debate...which is not an arguement if done right. It can just be sharing each others beliefs, one detail at a time. hmmm....thanks for your response! I will definately keep that in mind.

Colours come and colours go. Many of us have experienced this and most of us have learnt not to get upset over it. The colour represents our myLot rating which may be affected not only by the ratings given by other members but possibly other factors which only myLot knows best. This is my personal feeling which may be wrong. Maybe there are factors when combined together compound the effect of a fall.
Trolls and negative raters have always been cited as the culprits and in many cases they may be guilty. But maybe we should take a long look at ourselves. Do not get me wrong, I am not condemning or criticising anyone, as I have suffered a fall twice since November last year. Sometimes we need to look at things close to us.
all the best,
rosdimy

I guess maybe I should clarify that i'm not upset over it. Note the humor I provided in the OP. Yes, I should probably go look at myself in the mirror and scold myself for being a woman that speaks her mind. hehe. i'm joking of course!

To be honest, I'm still learning, too. I'm not sure how it works completely, but basically the idea is to provide a positive participation on the site with well thought ideas and get along with others. Unfortunately not all do that. In fact, even though i don't like the dinosaur, I think many adults should've been watching Barney when they were younger. ;)

i'm a lot like you mine has gone up and down a bunch on times since i started on here. i don't really understand the ratings system too much my one friend who posts a lot was a 10 for a time then got bumped back to a 9 and she was not too happy about it. i try not to let it bother me i never try to give anyone bad ratings as long as they give a response that deals with the topic. i always try to give a quality response and some are longer then others sometimes there is only so much you can say on one particular topic.

Yes, there are times when so many people have responded that if I were to say anything I would most likely start repeating what the others are saying. I usually stay out of discussion that get to be 7+ pages long. Most likely alot of response might end up being skipped over and if you don't get any ratings on your words, then that might effect your rating, too.

"Gotten so mad at someone elses thoughts that you rated them negatively"
I had this happen to me just two days ago. I had a 83/100 (or a yellow star with an 8). I went to bed with that on my Mylot account. The next morning my star magically dropped down to a 7 and my xx/100 dropped by ten points between going to bed and waking up.
It doesn't particularly matter to me but I still wondered why people rated me negatively so much/fast.
Then I remembered it happened right after posting something in a politcs topic that some Obama supporters must have disliked. Then it was an "Oooooh, that's what it was" kind of moment.

Oh i see...It's okay mate..I don't think the star will be the one that indicates your excellent participation. I think with the responses that you've give to other people, those other people will remember them well and so it's by that that you are rated an excellent participator, not a star..But i do know how you feel..Suddenly something you've achieved had been ripped off, you'd want answers and justification... =] Hope you'll get ranked back up..

Welcome to Mylot! I see that you're new here. So, i'm just going to offer some advice. three words or one sentence won't cut it here. You have to provide a well thought out response to the discussion. See, I don't know if you're replying to me or to the person above you. If you're trying to earn a little here and there, then the better your response the more you will earn. If you keep giving short responses, you'll get lots of negatives and hardly any money will be given to you. Just a tip for the future responses that you will give. :D Good luck, here!
