Did anyone know of Shakira back in 1999?

I first heard Shakira back in 1999. I was living in Mexico at the time and saw on TV a beautiful dark haired girl, who wore clothes, and had a great voice. Did anybody else know about her back then or was she only popular in Mexico?

I was in Peru that time.. she had great songs.. specially antologia.. really good..
