In prayer there is petition, supplication to what you call God, reality. You as an individual are demanding, petitioning, begging, seeking guidance for something which you call God. There for your approach is one of seeking reward, seeking a gratification, you are in trouble, and you pray for guidance, or you are confused and you beg for clarity, you look help to what you call God, in this implied that God, whatever God maybe going to clear up the confusion which you and i have created. After all it is we who have brought about the confusion, misery, chaos, the appaling tyranny, the lack of love, and we want what we call God clear it up, in other word we want our misery, our sorrow, conflict to be cleared away by somebody else. We petition another to bring us light and happiness.

Well you seemed to have summed it up pretty good. But for me, prayer is only my mental focus on things desired. If God gives all things, then I focus on desires, not on negative things undesired.

here I agree completely with freethinkingagent. Prayer is focusing on a desire. If you desire clarity focus completely upon understanding, and it will come. Stay positive in your prayers, and in your mind. For even when you are not praying "God" I put this in quotations because if you are not a believer this may still count, we can call your "God" Karma, or what ever you choose, my favorite was "the Universe" At anyrate, will still be aware of what you are focusing your mind upon, and provide you the opportunity to acquire that which you desire, you have merely to seize the opportunity when it arises, We refer to this opportunity as a inspiration to do something, if you do not act, then you did not seize. Carp dieme.

The Universe wants to give, but only you can say what you want it to give.

There are many ways of looking at Prayer. I would say prayer is primarily communing with God. You just do some plain talking with Him who is the only True Friend, Philosopher, Guide or Father, whatever you want to view Him as. Now, if you relate to God like what has been mentioned here it really doesn't matter what words you put together to make your prayer. It could be anything. Begging for help, clarity, or any of what you have mentioned and much more. We are all here to grow from where we are. If we are animals- I mean like animals in nature then we need to grow to be a true and good human being. You are right in saying that this should be our individual responsibility to work at that growth. Yeah such an approach of taking responsibility for one's growth is laudable, nay desirable. But think of someone who knows what is right but isn't embarking on that journey for very silly reasons like he/she is beset with problems needing immediate attention. It may be that he/she is unable to get closer to God for His own sake. So, he/she could begin with prayers asking for help of any kind. After all God is the Father. One could ask Father for help- of any kind. In so doing he/she will in time realize that he/she was going to God for very insignificant things! Soon, he/she will get over this going to God for anything other than the True Reason- to get into His presence. The RETURN to the SOURCE. Trust me this will happen.
