Although springtime is one of my favorite seasons, I'm always ambivalent about it because I have such a deep-seated fear of severe storms. The recent rash of tornadoes to hit the south were especially upsetting to me because I grew up in the are of Tennessee that suffered the worst damage with loss of life. I immediately went on the alert when I heard about it because Murfreesboro, Tennessee is not your everyday household name when you think of towns in the United States. The population consists of 100,00+ people, and I attended school there for six years(although I lived about 10 miles away). My concern was based on the fact that I still have some family and friends there. My question for you is do your ears perk up when you hear about an event in the news that focuses on a place or people you are connected with?

Despite different nationalities, despite different languages, I believe we human beings share the same feelings deep in heart, such as love, desire for peace etc.
My ears will perk up even when the event in the news focusing on those poor people living in a poor village in a unrest country in mideast with whom I am totally unfamiliar.

It must be awful to have to worry about Tornadoes honey - I have never experienced Tornadoes, hurricanes etc and find the thought of them terrifying enough. I do find my ears twitching when i hear something about places connected to my loved ones 0 it is a very weird feeling isn't it honey! xxx

Yes, mummymo, that is so true! You are very fortunate to have not had to live through such severe weather.

I think, Aurone, that once we've lived in a particular place we always maintain some connection to that place unless we make a conscious effort to put the past behind us.

Oh yes, we are from Southeast Louisiana and we have been in Ohio since the hurricane in 2005. It is always good to see news about home, some good, some bad but either way it makes a connection to a place that you called home. The tornados was horrible that went through there and in the other towns too. I feel for the people there as I went through the F-5 in Xenia, Ohio in 1974, will never forget it and never want to see it again. I felt so sorry for the man who lost his wife and baby. I don't understand why these things have to happen. The weather has gotten so bad every where and it seems as each year passes it gets worse. We can only pray that we don't have to experience it in our town. I cringe each time a weather warning is put out even for the people that are far away, a sad why to have to live in fear. I always ask god to keep us safe when there is bad weather coming our way, so far he has been done a good job and I believe he will keep us safe as long as we ask in his name, and believe. With tornados there is no time to take cover or find saftey. I had to wait and see when last year the hurricanes came on after the other to southern Louisiana, all of my hubby's family is there still. And he was there visiting relatives when 2 hit, so any news from home is good to hear.

Yes, bdugas, news from home is always welcome. One of my college professors and his family were lost in the Xenia tornado, and while driving through there a while after caused an eerie feeling. You are absolutely right about the speed with which a tornado can come up. It caused me much anxiety when I was younger due to my fear of high winds and thunderstorms.

Yes I always get concerned whenever I hear of severe storms anywhere in the country. I have a lot of mylot friends from just about everywhere, and I heard there were tornado warnings all along the southern area of the US...even Georgia...I just emailed one friend there to find out if she's all right.

That's good looking out, pyewacket, and as I said before, we should all be more concerned for the welfare of friends and family, but also to everyone everywhere who is undergoing such a traumatic experience.

Yes, I do. The day before that tornado in Murfreesboro there was a fire jumping all over Midwest City, Oklahoma, swept along by the winds. I grew up there. Part of me wants to know all about it, and part of me is scared to. I do not have family, or close friends there anymore, but I do know people there.
