I really thought she was dying - it was so scary and horrible!

This morning I found Maggie on my dining room floor, making a horrible sound from deep in her body and her head was cocked at a really weird angle and foam was coming out of her mouth. I called her name over and over and over, with no response, I touched her, no response. I thought she was going to die right there in front of me, and I just started crying. I love her, and she's been with me for 13 years. She is the sweetest thing you could ever meet. I knew this day would come, my dog Maggie is old, and she's had a tough life. She was rescued form near death after being horribly abused before we adopted her. She's a Golden retriever mix and we've nearly lost her to Lyme Disease and Erhlichia several times over the years. She doesn't hear or see so well any more, and sometimes she has "senior moments" where she just seems so far away, it take s a while to get her attention. But she is loved, by everyone in my house including ALL the other pets (even the cats). As I was crying over my non-responsive dying dog, my husband woke up and also believed that we were losing her. just them my son started crying in his room and I had to tend to him. My husband had gently moved Maggie's head into a more normal position, as I'd asked, to make her more comfortable. By the time I came out with my son, Maggie had stopped foaming and was just laying there breathing shallowly but the awful noise she'd been making had stopped. A few minutes later she got up under her own power and followed me into my room where she laid down in her usual spot by my bed. Her breathing became more normal, and a little while later she got up and drank some water and wagged her tail for me. She is now acting fine (for her) and went out with the other dogs to make and is now sleeping at my feet as I type this. I think she may have had a seizure or was perhaps choking and I am convinced that if my husband had not moved her head when he did she'd be dead right now. I love my dog but she is old and has had a rough life, I know the day I'll have to say goodbye is coming soon, but thankfully, today doesn't seem to be that day. As my dog was laying and perhaps dying, I had crossed myself and sent a fervent prayer for her, I think that my desperate plea was heard, and Maggie gets to spend another day in our lives, THANK GOD. I am still quite shaken though, and I am watching my sweet Maggie very closely. We have no money for a visit to the vet, and at her age (she is also disabled form all the battles with tick diseases over the years, her spine is fused together in places and she has joint problems) if we go to the vet, it would only be to end her suffering if it became apparent that she no longer enjoyed being alive. Right now she still seems to enjoy life, I hope I am never forced to make the decision to put her down and that when it is time for her to "go home" it will be of natural causes. I pray it won't be anytime soon, but i suspect it will. Thanks for reading this, feel free to comment.

Thank you, dreamweaverjan, and to everyone else who posted here with such kind words. She is still with me at the moment, resting comfortably (I hope) on her blanket by my bed.

Thank God Maggie is okay AngryKitty...what a terrible ordeal for all of you! It does sound like a seizure. My little dog, Sugar, had two seizures one night...within 15 minutes of each other. It was so horrible to watch and her symptoms were much like what you described. When the seizures ended it took her a while to *come back*, too. She's a young dog, around 3 years old, so I took her to the vet the next morning fearing the worst but he wanted to wait and see if she had any more before costing me a lot of money in testing. She's never had another one so we still have no idea what was going on with her that night. I will keep Maggie in my thoughts and prayers. I agree with you, God hears our prayers and I hope Maggie continues to do well.

To me it sounds like she has had a seizure. which is in the brain. I had adog he was fourteen and a half also of mixed breed. Had a massive seizure one day. He didnot come out of it fully and had to have him euthinazed as they call it. He didn't seem to be suffering but I was seeing him shaking all the time. andit was me that was suffering seeing him as he was. The blood that circulates is getting sluggish you must take your dog to the vet and they could put him on blood thinners or make sure in his food you give him stuff to help it thin. Research it you might find something to help.

I have a peakengese, that we have had for nearly 8 years. Hos name is Gomez, I don't know why but when he was a baby he just looked like a gomez. He is my buddy, my protector. He is near me where ever I am. He is so much a part of this family, that losing him would almost be like losing a child. I know some say he is a dog, yes he is and after you have had them for so long they are a part of the famiiy. I know like you one day he will pass on, he has had some sezisures too, and I actually don't know what I will do without him. i can't bear the thought. He has a stuffed toy that is a small white dog and I will say go find puppy and he is off to look for it. He hates a bath and puppy was so dirty one day I decided to throw him in the washer, I swear when I said going to give puppy a bath, he got the same look as if I had said I was giving him a bath.He had to see in the dryer when I put him in there to dry. I play on the floor with him and puppy and he dont' want you to touch it, and he will bite you over it. But you let someone put their hands on me and I swear he turns into a pitbull. He watches animal planet and trys to catch the dogs on there. I guess he is just like I said my buddy. Funny how we get so attached to an animal. I know the day we have to put him down will be the saddest day I ever have. Thank god yours is still with you. Just remember when he goes he will be in a better place with no pain.

Two years ago i brought an abandoned little dog home.I fed it every day and it got stronger and stronger. It felt more familiar with me,we began to play together,i ran and it ran after me,when i stopped it went into my arms. Then the horrible days came just after about half of mouth. My brother rode a motor and ran over it.I just stood aside and saw what had happened ,my tears rolled down my cheek helplessly.I can understand your love for your pet,13 years can change a pet into a permanent friend. When that terrible day comes, don't be desperate because you have possessed your pet's company for a long time.

Oh AngryKitty I so sorry for your scare there and I really do hope that Maggie is better now and will be for a long time to come. I've had pets since I was five and that means I've had my own sorrows with them. Keep us posted on how she's doing okay????

I know how you felt! My dog Domino had a seizure like that at 13 and it paralyzed him. I had to take him to the vet that night and help him cross over. But a seizure rarely is that bad and older dogs do have them, especially when they've had other illnesses. Don't be discouraged. Take her to the doctor and he can give her some phenobarbital to control the seizures, it's a cheap medication. I spend $15 a month on Gus's phenobarbital, we got him after Domino passed. Like him, Gus is a Boston Terrier. He was bitten by a rattlesnake and then developed epilepsy. It's been 7 years since then and he's still going strong at 9 years old! I hope this will encourage you a bit. Give Maggie a hug for me!

It's always hard when an older pet acts differently. It's also hard when you have to make that decision about their life. I had to put my cat of 18 years down after she couldn't go on living the way that she was. I hope you have many more happy years with your dog.

Oh I'm so glad she's ok. It sounds like a seizure to me. As you know I work at a nursing home. The other day we had Bingo. Something told me to put one resident in particular next to me as I called the numbers. I never did before, she does fine, I usually put the ones who are slower next to me. I called a number and glanced at her card and noticed she didn't mark the number. I looked and she was doing the same thing. I called for help and they said that she had had a seizure. She was fine when I went to see her later, it sure was scary. Be prepared for her to have more though.
