Getting our house evaluated

After a four month delay, numerous phone calls, and bugs by our doctor, we are getting our house evaluated to see if it can be made handicapped ready. I know that we need a ramp, but we might also need the door to our bathroom enlarged and will have to know if there is wires on both sides. We will also need hand rails in the bathtub, and a power chair that can go along a 24 inch hall way and also go outside. I really do not want to move to a senior's apartment nor does my husband even though he acts as if it might be good, but our house is small as it is, and the area where the senior houses are are not where one can get good bargains food wise. The prices at the grocery stores there are quite high and besides we have our friends here who will help us. So wish us luck.

Good for you! I am happy that someone is coming to help. Is this for someone else to help pay for? Think about a shower, instead of a tub. You will love it after it is done. It sounds like a lot of changes, but will make your life so much easier. Good luck with it all.

They make them big enough to roll a shower chair into and he could give himself a shower. It would make him feel so much more independant. They are going to be installing one for us soon. I can't wait.

Is that the kind where he can sit down?

My husband has trouble with his balance. He would need to hold onto something while doing so. Right now I give him sponge baths.

I hope you can get the things done you want. We refitted a bathroom recently to be more friendly to us in our older days. It was well worth the money.

It sounds as if you are planning ahead. I hope when I get my bathroom remodeled I will do the same. It is something to think ahead about.

We were checking the commercials on Tv and I also heard that here you get part of it paid for and I think it is also income tax deductible. We should also get one of those adjustable beds, but with me it would be dangerous. I have this weird sense of humor, and I would be lowering it up and down, the bottom half up, v in the middle, etc.

You know suspenseful I have always said that if you do not want to move to a senior apt just don't do it....I have actually moved into a senior apt, it is like for 55 and up.....I was so mislead by these apts, i thought it would be just a bunch of old people but it is totally different from what i thought...I really love it here....Now it is NOT for people who cannot care for themselves, that would be an assist living apt, but that is not what senior living is all about, its just for seniors...We have beautiful apts, with free high speed internet, also it has a gym, a pool, a huge kitchen, lots of activities and it is really wonderful....I have met many friends and they are NOT all old...We have people who drive , go shopping & have fun ....At first i did not want to move here but i dd it because the rent was cheap, but after being here i am very happy..I have a washer/dryer, a microwave, a disposal,a patio for my plants, a beautiful pool, a garden, and a gym to work out, we go on trips we have a blast here & i am so glad i moved here.....I would never want to move back to my place in the country, the benefits here are awesome....I just wanted to share this with you, not trying to change your mind but just wanted to enlighten you on the benefits IF you ever decide to do it.........

The trouble is that my husband would have to be in an assisted living and according to what my friends who are nurses and home care people, I could not go with him. I happened to know that and we also checked in the price of these things and even with us selling the house, it would not work. And we live in a small house anyway, so we cannot throw that much away. And then we would be at the beck and call of those who decide when we can go in and out. It is all right if you are a widow, widower, or a single person, but for couples unless they are waiting for God, and unless they do not want to see younger people that often, staying at home is the best and besides our house is paid for.

Good luck to you! I know those things will help you in so many ways if needed. It is so hard for anyone to really want to leave "home" unless it is just the best choice. You are very fortunate to have friends to help you out also. As far as groiceries , you might want to see if angelfoodministries has a host church in your area. THey really have some good deals on food and for two , I think you would find it very useful .Hope it all works out well for you.

Lots of luck to you. It is really so much better if you can stay in your own familiar home, around friends and community that you know. You know what kinds of resources are there to help you.

Oh, much luck with the evaluation!! It would be so much better if you could stay in your home. It doesn't take much to put rails in the bathroom but I can see where the doorways would be a major undertaking. When my mom fell and broke her pelvis (not the hip, thank God) my nephew came and did the grab bars in the bathroom and an extra rail on the stairway. He also put a railing in the hallway which is pretty as well as very, very useful. Especially those days when I get up so stiff and aching. Rails are great, put them wherever you can!
