I get to raise my hand first cuz I got laid off in Jan. (also cuz I started the discussion. But some of you may get to raise your hand before me if you got laid off sooner.)
Stuff started slowing down last year and our overtime was cut off in Nov. They laid off about 20 people then. In Jan, I left along with 40 co-workers. They told us to hang out and we'd probably be called back around May or June. Then last month they laid off another 260!! So I stopped sitting by teh phone waiting for the call back.
Have you or anyone you know lost their jobs?

While I haven't been laid off, I've still suffered from this.
I had to move, downsize because I couldn't afford to keep up with the rent on the last place.
I work seasonal, so there hasn't been much work at all to do.
I had to get rid of a lot of things that wouldn't fit into the new apartment, and that would have made me a lot of money if I could have sold everything.
Now I'm in massive debt, can't find a temp job, no one's hiring, and can't get to seasonal work yet.
It's driving me mad, and makes me worry that I'll lose the apartment that I just moved into on the 1st.

It's never easy, and there's no guarantee on when it will get better. I just hope the economy turns around soon.

What type of seasonal work do you do?
I am on unemployment right now, but it is about $600 less a month than what I was making. So I just cover the bare nesesities and the rest of my debts just sit. All of my cards have gone to collections, but at least they aren't racking up the late fees any more.
But there isn't much I can do about it now.

I'm sorry to hear this Kris. We are lucky because right now we live with my partner's parents but it's frustrating because there is no privacy. As far as being behind on bills...I am in your shoes as well. After paying them for staying here, groceries, car payments, etc. It's so hard. And even harder to catch up once you get behind.

Well I haven't been laid off yet, but I work at a call center and they are getting rid of the client we have. So they got rid of alot of people and you see it get smaller and smaller in there. Right now they are getting a new client and told us that at the beginning there will only be 25 of us. I was chosen as one, so for now I am still ok. Sorry that you lost yours though. I have absolutely no idea what I would do as my partner doesn't work. I will pray that you get called back.

My aunt works where I used to. She's been there 23 years and was safe. She got downgraded to a lower paying position, though. I had only been there a bit over a year, so I was early on the list to go.
Congrats on being a 'chosen one' Hope it stays that way for you.

Yea it seems like that is the way it works. A lot of times they don't pay attention to the ones who may be doing an excellent job even though they haven't been there is long.

I think that it is a law that when they are having a lay-off, they have to start at the bottom of the list and work up. Senority is all a person has to save them.

My husband and I are retired, and I did not work much so we have our pensions, but I do know that our food prices have gone up, and much of the stuff that I want to buy has gone up. I guess that is to do with all those laid offs. Also our interest rate in our bank accounts have lowered, and since we are on a fixed income, that means we will have a hard time saving. So that means we cannot spend as much, we will have to put more into our bank account.
Here in Manitoba, it is not that bad, what we have is what went on everywhere else.

this economic has not spared many.....baring only a few....construction sector has recovered well after the impact of it.......but everything is down for the moment .....IT can be said as the prey of the great depression & showing hard signs to get back on track....

i got laid off in january, also. you know it's bad when social workers get laid off, and even more serious when a social worker can't find another job fairly easily.

I dont know anyone who lost a job but my dad and my brother had a hard time finding jobs. My parents and my brother moved from TX to OK to help me with my 2mnth girl while I work and it took my dad about 2 mnths to find a job even though he applied at over 50 and it took my brother almost 3 mnths. It makes me so mad when I see people who dont take care of their job while others are praying for even just an opening.
