I think it all depends on where you're shopping. It's definitely not a good idea to enter your credit card information whenever some site random asks for it - but some of the best deals on products are the ones I've found online. For example, I've only ever had wonderful experiences on eBay buying all sorts of clothes, jewelry, electronics - everything! I'd say ask around about a certain site if you're worried about it being a scam, though.

So you would advice me only to use cards for trustworthy sites.

If you are concerned more about the Credit Card identity theft, you can use Virtual Credit cards for online shopping. If you have account (with ATM card) with HDFC bank, you can create a Virtual Credit Card for a required amount (within your available balance), and use it for online shopping. The VCC is valid for only one transaction and expires within 24 hours. The only drawback is, chargebacks are possible within that 24 hours. If the online shopping mall has netbanking enabled, you can use it safely. Because, you will be taken to the server of the Bank and returned to the merchant after making payment. The online vendor wouldn't be able to know what you did (your username, password etc.) in that transaction. Some online vendors allow us to use prepaid Gift cards too.
