certain dishes? We had some people bring soda, my sister in law brought the ham. Uncle brought mashed potatoes and gravy. We bought ingredients for the sides like green bean casserole, corn casserole 4 cup salad etc. Makes for a good meal, and saves everyone money all the way around!

Usually, they will bring whatever they have in mind and most of the time, none. I don't mind that. Since we're the host, I usually prepare the meals. Plus, my sister usually arrives early to cook together. But for bigger occasion like a feast, it's a custom for people in my place to bring something like sugar, rice or any ingredient that can be use while cooking.

My wife will usually tell everyone what the theme of the get-to-gether will be. For example, Southwestern fare means Tex-Mex food. Maybe it's Louisiana/Creole for crawfish, boudain. etc..etc...We usually already have all the food we need but if they want to add to the food with a favorite dish, thats ok too. Or maybe they want to bring their favoite beverage. Normally though if they just bring themselves for a good time, thats all that concerns me.

When we have a family meal that is the way we do. Everyone brings something. There is a list and people say what they are going to bring. That way there is not the same dishes brought. There is a list for desserts, drinks, and the main dishes. There is a lot of variety of dishes and different kind of drinks when we have our family meals.

That is what we try to do also. My mom did the roast and I did the mashed potatoes and green beans and rolls since it was just me and hubby and her, my step dad and little sister. Usually though we make a bigger thing out of it. But this year was quiet. Most of my family lives in Ohio and those that don't couldn't make it. I did make a Coleslaw for my sister in laws cookout that I wasn't able to attend but was invited too. I am always ask to make my coleslaw and potato salad.

Potluck lunches / meals were common for us as I was growing up. We had so many aunts and uncles that it only made sense for everyone to bring something instead of one person footing the entire food bill. I believe it generally worked out that one person routinely brought the same thing, so that we need not worry about there being too much of one item. I'm not sure how that was all organized, but this is how it seemed to work out.

I have a BIG family so when we have get togethers yes everyone brings something. I think one year we did all of it and ended up spending around $600 jsut for that one get together so its deff. a money saver if everyone brings something instead of one person cooking for everyone. We try to bring atleast 2 dishes per person but for the most part i usually bring more because i like coking lol so i jsut bring more usualy.

I don't ever ask because they always offer, or sometimes they just show up with something extra. In my family most of the other people who cook usually know what the other family members like. Kind of like they each have their own specialty. Whatever they bring I sure do appreciate it! It makes it nice when other members of the family prepare and bring things, it takes a lot of stress out of a family feast at a holiday (or even just a family birthday or gathering.) That's nice your family does that too!

Yes. We hardly ever do it anymore, but everyone usually pitches in so no one has to put out alot of money or do all of the cooking.

Hello ersmommy. When we have a family meal, we always prepare the food by ourselves. We are not used to asking or being asked to bring any food. Our family members just come for the meal if invited. But it is really a tiring job to prepare all those dishes, but what is great to us is that my family members offer a lot of help with the washing and cooking in the kitchen to make it easier for us. Good day to you, friend.

Whenever I used to throw any sort of party it would be one of those "everyone brings a dish" sort of party. Haven't done that in awhile though.
