I love the icon for this category...it's just how I feel. I need some help please all you gurus. My mouse is behaving erratically. It's jerky, slow and I have to keep unplugging it and replugging it into the USB port. I have a new mouse but it won't work at all. The USB port seems to be a bit loose.
I also updated and ran all my virus scans and cleaners.
Any suggestions?

Try a different USB port if you have one available. Also check that the surface you are using is clean (or a mouse pad). Is it a optical or ball mouse?

The USB port in the rear has not worked for a while, it's very loose. It's an optical mouse and is on a clean surface. I did a system restore this morning with no luck. I uninstalled the mouse...both of them and re-installed them. The second one, the new one still won't work. I also tried for newer drivers and reinstalled the drivers. Still no joy.

If possible try out the mouse in another computer. That rules out the mouse.
It has to be either your motherboard or a lack of power in the USB ports. You said you updated your drivers? Was that motherboard drivers? Was there some software you installed before this started happening?

I took the laptop to be repaired. The techie said she cleaned up a couple of viruses and that the mouse and the hub I was using were working fine. It took her over a week to do this but she only charged me $20. Sure enough, when I got home neither the mouse or the hub were working properly...same as before I took it in. The mouse works ok in another machine but the hub does not. How do I fix the motherboard drivers?

The only other thing I can think might be making your mouse feel poorly and sluggish is that he might need a clean out inside, but then, you've probably already done that my friend. I can't think what else it might be unless the port connection is so loose that it's not kicking in properly.
Brightest Blessings in the hope you find a solution soon. xx

At one point I got an Error code 43 which means something wrong with the device (a big help at stating the obvious). But that doesn't explain why the new one does not work. I'm no closer to figuring it out my friend ... brightest blessings..

Hi MsTickle
he only other things that I can suggest is, try a different USB plug and also go to Control Pannel then to Mouse and see if the settings have changed I the new Mouse might not be working because I used to find that once it is plugged in you need to restart the Computer and then it work so give that a try to
Hope this Helps

If it's the roller ball mouse it is dirty and needs cleaning. If it is there is a little plate around the ball you can remove and take the ball out. You will see two little plastic pins and one plastic wheel the ball rolls on. They will have bunch of lint built up on them where the ball has been touching them. When I used that kind of mouse I used the point of my pocket knife to remove the lint. I finally got tire cleaning it and bought a lazor mouse. They don't have the ball and don't need a mouse pad.

How about going to your settings under contro panel? Just find that icon that says mouse and keyboard or something like that, and it'll enable you to adjust the speed of your mouse. I know cz i have expereinced something like this before due to the switch of a new mouse...Hope i was able to be of much use... take care! ^_^

My computer mouse has been giving me pains in the derrière for the last few days. The pointer won't move from it's spot. I have unplug, replug, and the only way o get it working again for awhile is to restart my computer and even then sometimes it will freeze again the mouse pointer nothing else on the computer does though. My mom bough a new mouse and hers isn't working at all either so I am hoping you will get yours fix soon I know how frustrating it can be.

I was just about to answer this and saw your Mum's response below. It must be a virus then that we have caught from one another. I'm at a loss what to do as I have done everything suggested here and a few other things and I've had no luck. I could accept that my mouse was worn out but I don't understand why the new one won't work at all. Looks like I'll be taking my laptop for a drive to the experts in the next town.

Mine was being jerky a few days ago then it was freezing. Mine has a blue light at the front and a red light at the back...only the blue light is on and I think that just means it's connected the red light is the serious workings of it. Not that any of this is important.

I see many people have shared some really good ideas for you to try. I hope you have been able to clear the problem so you can enjoy your computer more. I have actually worn out a few mouse's/mice. I have to replace my mouse about every two years.

I had a similar problem with a USB port on my laptop (my old, old one). I did everything I could think of to fix it, even getting a super fine paint brush and dusting it out, but nothing worked.
Not being very computer literate, I finally resorted to asking my husband, who is more computer savvy than I, and he found a few bent pins. Once they were (very, very carefully) straightened out, the USB was once again usable. Pitty my mouse had been destroyed in the meantime by a mischevious 3 year old!

I took it to the repairer but I don't think she did anything. I tried and tried and the mouse and cursor would work for a little while then go all erratic again. I've had a look and I can't see any pins in my usb connectors...only metal connect points. This is all so frustrating. I finally got the opportunity to take the other laptop back to the techie last Monday...it's now Saturday. She took notes and said she would ring me the following day and I have not heard from her. sigh.

As most of the people in this topic could be right, you have to troubleshoot in a linear fashion. You have to do the whole "process of elimination" when troubleshooting. The best thing to do is take your old mouse (you say it is USB), and bring it to a friend's house or to another computer. See if it exhibits the same erratic behavior on another computer as it does on yours.
If it works fine in another computer then you are most likely dealing with a hardware issue. That can include cleaning the ball and wheels on the inside as many have mentioned. It also sounds like you might have an optical mouse (red light under the mouse instead of a ball). In this case when you need to "unplug and plug" the USB connection, before you attempt this check under the mouse to see if the light is even lit up at all. This will tell you if you are getting power and can be a good indication if there is an issue with the physical USB connection.
If it does not work in another computer, then it still could be the moue ball needing cleaning. If not then you might have another type of unrepairable problem with the mouse. The reason the new mouse would not work is maybe you do not have the software installed that includes the drivers for the new mouse. You may have a earlier version of windows that does not come with the standard drivers.
You "might" want to include more information on this though. How old is the computer? Do you know the exact type of computer? Exactly what type of mouse? Any other USB ports available on your computer?
Do not listen to anyone who tells you that a scandisk, or defrag, or any other "scan" on your computer could be causing the problem. The fact that unplugging and plugging it in fixes the issue momentarily can rule out all of that stuff.

Tickle honey I ma very late in getting here and answering from email so may be being repetitive! My first thought was that you should take out the tracking ball and give it and inside the mouse a clean but since you have tried another mouse it seems unlikely that is the cause. Is it possible for you to try a wireless mouse? You can buy them quite cheaply on Ebay or Amazon etc. Hope you get it fixed sweety! xxxx

I think it is just a very ordinary problem that most of us have encountered or will encounter when operating a computer.
Judging from what you said above, i don't think it is some kind of software problem. And my suggestions are as below:
Make sure you have got a good mouse(it means that you have tried it on another computer and it works fine), then try it in the USB port you suspect broken,
if the good mouse works , then your old one is broken.
on the contrary,if the good one doesn't work either, then it must be something wrong with the USB port.

if you have the mouse with the ball under it that makes the mouse on the moniter move then all you need to do is open the bottom of it and clean out any dirt thats collected in there.
if its the red light mouse then you can just wipe the frame so that theres no stuff on the frame blocking the light from getting out.
sometimes the simplest stuff can cause really annoying problems..
