Try doing a defrag and compressing old files. Also download some spyware/virus scanners and make sure your computer is clean of nasty little bugs.
This site should have all the instructions you need: http://www.squidoo.com/pctweaks
If you have anymore questions please post them here :)

Basically your harddrive is a disc. And it stores thing on this disc. This disc is read by a needle. As you install more and more things on your computer this disc fills up. Slowly files are spread all over the disc.
so lets say you wanted to access a game, but one half of the game was on one half of the disc, with the other remaining half scattered all over the disc. The computer has to spend time going to each individual part, this increases time by alot and also can ruin your harddrive more quickly.
Defragging basically grabs all your files related to the same programs and places them next to eachother on the disc, meaning it can access them faster. (IT DOES NOT CHANGE OR MOVE ANY FILE DIRECTORIES) and i cannot stress that enough, you will not notice any files moved. It does it "behind the scenes" and all your files/folders will remain the same.
Interesting Note: Windows Vista automatically defrags itself!
As for virus/spyware. I prefer Avast and spybot.
Both links and info can be found here: http://www.squidoo.com/pcviruses

Sorry.I think you misunderstand me.The movies and songs is on your harddisk.I want to make you understand that your computer's memory is small or full of data.Such as antivirus software, service of windows XP,software which start with XP,etc.you can push "Ctrl+Alt+Del" to run windows task manager, check the tag "perfermence",now you can see how your computer's memory is used by "physicy memory".
Usually,if you want to run win XP on your computer ,the computer's memory should be 512 MB or more.

Hello pratik!
If you all already installed many programs on your computer, then there is greater possibility that you computer becomes slow...So far as possible, install only those programs that are very important to you...The thing I do most when My computer is very slow is formatting and reinstalling the system...If have made four partitions with to my hard disk memory, so I format only the system drive such that my other important files are safe...
If you don't want to format your computer you can try disk defragment. Disk defragment makes the datas in the computers memory continuous...The other option is increasing your virtual memory. This can also speed up your pc....
If you have antivirus installed on your computer, this can also make your computer slow...But if you have virus too, your computer can be slow again....
If you need further help, please tell, I will try to give whatever you can...
Happy mylotting fren...

Most likely your registry is containing a lot of bad keys and you should delete them.
Download this free software called ccleaner from download.com and run it.
with this you can clean bad registry keys , delete unnecessary files and speed up your PC .
Also use msconfig to stop unnecessary programs that start up with windows.

you can give it a virus scan and a spyware scan, a tune-up and close a few processes. also, the number of desktop icons can slow your computer, the amount of disk space available on the C: partition, and the number of partitions!

There are a lot of ways that cause the slowing down of a PC.
Defragmentation is the best solution and it is comparatively easy to do. Before you do that, delete manually the files or movies or songs that you never use. slowing down happens because of a crowded hard disk so try to free it up as far as possible.
Formatting the system completely is another option but then you would have to back up the data.

Make sure your hard disk has at least half not used space in there. Make sure that your RAM is huge, and always restart your computer at least every 24hrs. When you do that, it cleans up everything that's in the RAM and makes the capacity at 0. Also, don't you Norton or McAfee as an anti virus, those 2 are very heavy and can slow your computer down. Get Kaspersky, that's what I use and I LOVE it!!

Hey pratik!!!
I suppose your RAM's to be aroun 512-1 GB.....
Try using Diskeeper 2009 software for defragmentation, generally when you store any file the file allocation is made random so there is a chance of free memory in between two occupied memory slots in the HDD....These are called fragments. So the defragmentation process helps you to arrange these available spaces in a regular way.
Do not go for more themes and always try to keep the computer's window's drive free.....

Try deleting the .temp files from your user's documents and settings area. As they accumulate, they take up some unnecessary space, so some of your memory can be cleared of. Try to put up an antivirus which does not slows down the speed of your computer.
