What's worse, having no computer for six months or the end of the world?

About six months ago our computer crashed, maybe crashed is not the best word, perhaps power surge and smoking computer (literally) would be better. With the economy being like it is, it took some time to save up for another one. To cope, I read books, re-read others and watched a lot more television and finished some projects around the house that I had been putting off. So, my quesion of you is this, have you ever been in a similar situation and if so how did you cope with no computer, or what do you think that you may do in just a situation.

I had a whole year without a computer or any Internet access. I read a lot of books - I still read a lot. I spent a lot of time in the reference section of the library - now I find information online. I did not watch any television but I did listen more to radio. I missed being online, but I had a lot of other things going on in my life so I was happy enought to live without a computer. At the end of the year I felt it was necessary to buy a laptop and get connected again and I have no regrets about that.

Fortunately reading is something everyone in my family loves to do and though we do have internet now, I still carry a book with me to a doctor's appt. or anywhere I may be waiting for a while. As good as the internet is, there is still nothing like a good book to capture the imagination.

Hoboy! 6 months is a PRETTY long time to wait...I had a simillar experience although it was onle for a few weeks, i was already extremely bored that my lappy wasn't with me...My lappy was found to be overheated (and why am i not surprised) due to long hours of use...aha..I had a hard time coping of course, sometimes i would just sit on my couch taking a half hour just to organise my list of things to do even when there isn't any, i'd FIND things to do..It was the only thing i could do to keep myself from going nuts without my lappy around..^_^

It's surprising how much we relied on our computer....until we didn't have it to rely on. It's much easier finding answers on the internet than searching through books or other resources.

I would say the end of the world, that is if I were not a Christian. But since I am, I would not like having no computer for six months. I am a Christian and so I keep myself ready just in case and I make sure that I am prepared. I am putting money aside so I can go and buy a computer (I have enough for one now, a good one, and I am preparing for the end of the World by relying more on Christ and HIS KINGDOM. So for the computer, I was told that computers last around six years, so the best time to start saving for the next one is two years after you bought yours. Then when the computer bites the dust, you just go and buy the new one.

That sounds like a plan to live by on both accounts. My problem is saving the money for the new computer...it seems that something always comes up and that money is needed for something of a greater need.

I'd say the end of the world would be worse...having a pc wouldn't mean much if the world ended Granted I wouldn't be happy about not having a pc and after 8 days (8 days is my max) I'd have to be physically restrained and probably put on life support soon after that, but I'd make it six months Several years ago we had our pc's go down. The phone company came out and said we needed a jack replaced b/c of a storm. It took 8 days! On the eighth day, I was so desperate, I went to the library. I asked for a pc and the woman looked and me and said "I'm not sure we have a slot open". I leaned across the desk, right up to her and said slowly "YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND, I NEED A COMPUTER". She blinked a couple of times, swallowed nervously and said, "I'm sure I can find you one". Five minutes later I was sitting at one with my hand resting on the mouse. I didn't DO anything, just sat there with my eyes closed savoring the feeling. The next day our pc's were fixed...Thank God What would you do in either one or both? I found out that drinking large amounts of coffee doesn't make being without a computer any easier no matter how much it relaxes you while you use one. Fortunately my family and I had other things to keep us busy...maybe not all fun and games but certainly necessary during the time we had cope without the world at our fingertips.

I have been without the computer in my home for around a year at time. To tell you the troth it was because I couldn't afford the high price that I was having to pay for the internet provider. While I didn't have it I watched tv, read books, and cleaned house. The only reason that I finally got the internet back was because I could get high speed and because of having to do school work.

We switched internet providers when we got our new computer as well and got a much better deal with a faster connection. I am really much happier with the set up we have now all around.

I am sure I would be able to cope with out a computer I use the one at work or go to a library but with the economy as you said I worry about the world coming to the end first.

Those are both good ways to gain use of a computer, but for some they just wouldn't work that well. I live in the country and so the drive to the nearest library (especially the way gas prices were) wouldn't be feasible and I didn't have internet at work. Oh I could use someone's computer if I really needed to, but for me it was more a hassle going to someone's house and borrowing their computer than doing without. I did have to do that a couple of times though to order medicine for myself or some of my family.

I am sorry to hear that. I didn't know you lived in the country. Yeah its not worth the drive to the library with the gas prices these days.

Well, sometimes when a person is without a computer for like 6 months, it might seem like the end of the World, but everyone needs to remember that there are other things a person can do. We have 2 Computers right now... a lap top and my desk computer. I have a back up in case of one having problems, plus the laptop for when I am out of town, etc. But I can remember being without for a short time and it did about drive me nuts. I do so many things online everyday was why I needed a plan for sure.

I think that growing up and not having a computer till I was an adult made the struggle less severe. I would hate to see what my own children will do in the future if something similar happens.

I am on my 3rd puter since 1999. Went with out till I found what I wanted. Even got a lap top I never used and now the kids have crashed that. Of course I would read and watch tv but maybe no more than I do now. For have a tv on 24/7 somewhere in the house but I also read while watching. WELCOME BACK!

It is definitely good to be back. We have the tv going most of the time as well. Sometimes I think it's just the noise because we will be in and out of the room where the tv is and can't keep up with all that is going on. I think that this is our 4th computer, but two of those we bought used just because we didn't have the money for a new one at the time.

For me, they would both rank about the same. I had a ten year old homebuilt that was way out of date. It would play some of the older games, but it was only really good for email and sites that did not use a lot of flash programs or streaming video, because it couldn't handle them. I ordered a newly rebuilt emachines that would meet my needs nicely, and it worked well for about 3 months... right up to the end of the warranty, at which time it began to randomly restart on me, even during email and mylot. It finally quit altogether. Before this happened, I was talked into donating the old, slow, and dependable machine to a family member, since I had a newer, faster, and much better machine... which meant I had no computer. I still wasn't completely without one though, because the wife let me use her machine, =which we had done prior to getting the new on. I finally bought a brand new HP, which works very nicely. Meanwhile, the rebuilt is in a corner of the room until I can get a monitor and a stick of memory to see if that will bring it back to life. To be completely without a computer would be about the same as a world ending event, because my world is the computer.

truly they would both be tragic events to have to go through.....however with losing a computer you can get through it...but then again if the world ended you wouldn't know it anyways. Yep, they would both be pretty bad in their own ways.

I hope that you never have to find out, but it is good to have an old fashioned hobby to fall back on. Those are good to have at any rate.

Well actually you might think I am telling you a tale when I tell you this..but it is true....the guy who fixes my computer is call the PC Doctor.....he even makes house calls...He knows how attached I am to my computer and if possible he fixes it the same day that I bring it in or call him....the last time he did it in two hours! Maybe I drive them nuts when they have possession of it...but they get it done right now for me! LOL....I hate being without my computer! LOL

I wont say that ours was beyond fixing, but I imagine that it would have not been the wisest thing to do as opposed to purchasing a new one. Both motherboard and hard-drive were cooked, but it would be nice to have someone nearby which could work on them like that when you needed it.

Million's, Billion's of people have lived and continue to live without computers. Today's soceity rely's to much on electronic devices such as computers. Computer's and other electronic devices not only make are lives easier, but also are a great source of entertainment. I have not personally experienced a large amount of time without my computer, however i strongly depend on it make's me think what would i do without it. I sure would spend more time with family and outdoor activites, and get more work done throughout the house.

I know some people who would think that going for 6 months without a computer would be the end of the world. Others would would rejoice at being able to be away from a computer for 6 months or longer. Personally I cannot help but think that we could all use a little more time without electronic entertainment, either television or computers. I haven't been without a computer since some time in the late 80s or early 90s. I would quite know what to do without a computer. But I think I could give it up without much problem. I frequently forget to even look at my e-mail and social messaging sites for days at a time. I have to remind my self to look at the computer. I am currently on disability and I have had this problem/pleasure since I have not been at work. I tend ot read books, sew, crochet and do other things around hte house. And some times I even go out and sprnd time wiht friends. Cheers.

I couldn't agree with you more. It seems to me at least that the more technically advanced the world becomes, the more it pulls family and friends apart. In some cases though it does draw people closer together. Email makes it a snap to keep in touch with those family and friends not living nearby.

I was in the same situation like you but then, not for so long as six months but sometimes ago a week or sometimes two or three days. I think that is something which makes us boring and for me i feel like doing nothing if my computer doesn't work well, until it works well again, only then can i be active as early, sometimes I think myself, how addicted am i towards computer and internet. I don't know about the end of the world, I have no idea as to how it happens and when it happens but this is seriously worse for me and to spend time when it happens like this is too tough task.

I think that for us the greatest loss was the information that was available at our fingertips. There were many times that I wanted to look up how to do something I was working on around the house, and didn't have that resource. The internet has many great uses....and some bad ones...but for us, the loss of available information was the worse thing.

I had been used to using our laptop and it developed a problem, so we had to share the desktop. It sure messed up my routine. I might get more exercise without the computer, I guess. Glad you replaced your computer and you remembered us.

Oh my gosh. That would have drove me crazy because I earn online seven days a week. I would have to go right out and get me another one quickly. I already get alot of things done around the home daily also though.

My wife earned on the internet from some different sites and I know that she missed it greatly. I mostly use it to look up information and play a few games. If we really needed one desperately, we could borrow a relatives for a while, like to order medicine or something like that.

I was without one for a few days last year when we lost power for 4 days. It didn't really bother me because I didn't have a computer till I was in my early 40's and knew how to entertain myself. I caught up on a lot of things, just like you. I would rather be without the computer than see the end of the world.

I think you are well aware of how i felt about being without my computer, goodness i told you often enough! It was amazing to me how LONELY it was and although i love to read the last few months i was so bored that i couldn't even work up any enthuasim for books (and that is saying something). Oddly enough since we got the computer back i have read two books!

Hmmm... I would have to say that having no computer for six months is worse than the end of the world because it would be so cool for the world to end and start anew, it really sucks right now. But then again it depends what type of end you're talking about, if its George Romero-type zombie apocalypse, then hey i'm all for it. End it baby!

I think that I would rather lose my computer that fight zombies all day long. Truly there are many things in the world that sucks right now, but then again there are many things in the world that are wonderful as well. I guess it's all according to where we place our focus.

The end of the world because then you'll never be able to fix your computer, jajaja. I sold my computer about 6 months ago and I still dont have another one but I just use the one at work for now. Now that I dont have the internet taking up my time at home I have started excersising wich I said I would do like a year ago. I also cook more than I used too and get to spend more time with my family wich is the best.

Now for me that would drive me crazy. We use computers at work....but they don't have the internet. I think the one thing that I regret is not doing more exercise. I had good intentions to do it, but just not much effort.
