the polar bear

in an interview, one of the last questions came with a bit of a surprise. i did ask him afterward (the same question he threw me) and he said that it was just something to let him know whether or not one thinks out of the box. i'm glad i answered the question satisfyingly, albeit it took time to do so.
the question:
why do you [guys] think polar bears are left-handed?
you could answer with "it's natural, god made them that way" and it will be correct...but not insanely creative, which i think is what the guy was looking for--and why i changed my answer. lol

That is a surprising question to be asked in an interview. I would have been completely thrown off and said I wasn't aware that polar bears were left handed. I may have even asked if it was relative to the job or if the interviewer were just thinking out loud.

I guess your interviewer wanted to see how you would handle it and if you would answer in a creative way or avoid the question.

yes, polar bears are left handed, i think they are the only animals who are--except for humans.
my answer: (ahem)
polar bears are left-handed because most humans and other animals are right-handed. nature is about balance: if the polar bears are more comfortable with their left hand, it would be easier for the person/animal that they encounter to block their attack because their [polar bears'] left hand would be facing the right hand [of the victim]. it isn't much, but it gives the necessary push for the person (most possibly carrying a weapon--with their right hand) to survive the (if ever) attack of the polar bear.
...or something like that. i think i explained it better here. lol

I've watched polar bears and they hold down things with their right hand and that only leaves the left had to do the difficult work. But let handed or right handed,
I don't need to be close enough to worry about it. I couldn't believe that woman in Germany dove into the bears pond, during their feed time and didn't get eaten. Did you look to see if the bears went after her with their left or right hand? I sure didn't and I'll bet she didn't either.

Job interview? If yes, then it's a very tricky question. Some companies prefer people who think out of the box. Making him/her unlimited and open to new ideas no matter how bizarre it may be. While there are companies who prefer people to think within the box. These are the companies who needs people under their control and under the set of rules they have prepared and they are not open for any changes yet.
