From time to time the writer of this discussion, which is me, ponders about thing that I am neither at first against or for. One of these perplexing pondering is monarchist, which is the support of one's nation's head of state being of a royal family. Now I cannot say that I am for a monarchy because I am an American and Americans despise monarchies, but I loath the idea of being told what I should believe. Of course this is not a serious political view point I am coming too, but just something that I am thinking about. So my question that I have beaten around is do any of you fellow MyLotters thing an American Monarchy would ever be a good idea, and if so how would you work it. Now if you just want to slam the whole thought proving exercise then go right ahead too.

Hi gewcew, I am a Canadian and while maybe not as much of a monarchist as some, I do like the idea of a monarchy. I'm not sure why but it is probably due to my upbringing. I don't however, believe a monarch show have any more power than is given him or her by the elected representatives of the people. Blessings.

Hi again gewcew, A monarch with absolute power would be a dictator and while some may be good rulers, others would not. To today's world I think a monarch can only be a figurehead. Blessings.

ah,a monarch which is the representative of the people, would not have more power than elected political leaders in modern world. so, is it necessary?

I think part of what America is about is in one way or another getting away from a King's rule. The pilgrims didn't want a king to dictate what they can worship. Then finally they had enough of taxation without representation. Bye, bye, King rules. It's been going well ever since. Nowadays in most countries, kings or queens really don't have much say anymore. But they are a good tourist attraction. I think we have managed quite well without a King or Queen to represent the country. It's not what America stands for and it's not what we need as a tourist attraction either. If people need something to adore they idolize some Hollywood star. Nope, we don't need a royal family. Although I know that many would like to put the Obamas on a throne. At one time it was the Kennedys. Really, I mean, do we want to put somebody in a spot that is usually inherited by an offspring, not really being able to remove that person without great difficulty, if we don't like him/her/or the rest of the family (after all they do come as a package deal)? They have to be paid, they have to get a place to live, they have to get expense accounts, servants.... Why complicate things? It's not needed, and it's not part of our culture.

Believe it or not, the young America had the opportunity to have a king and a monarchy. Yep, George Washington was offered the chance to be king. Of course, he declined with some remark IIRC about there already being too many king Georges. Right now, a good King would probably be better than our bad President. Overall, I'll still take the President over a king.

Even a monarchy has to answer to someone... they cannot go it alone. I am more concerned about an Oligarchy, where the masses are controlled by a few at the top... a ruling elite. This is where we are headed. http://dontgo.ning.com/video/the-american-form-of Consider the Roman Empire and how it went from a Republic to an Oligarchy, then consider how that compares to the things that are currently occurring in America. .

I think that America is all right without a monarchy. For one thing think of the monarchies before, there were bad kings and good kings. Now the good kings ruled their whole life, but what happens if you wind up with a bad king? Unless his nephew assassinates you, or the people dispose him, you are stuck with him for life. America avoided this problem by electing presidents that could stay for a four year time and if good, could continue for eight years. It worked out better. And besides who would you want to be your monarch, and what if the one chosen is not the one some want? I know that youknowwho might be willing to be the first one because even though he did not say so, he acted as if he wanted to be one. But that would never be right. Have elections and you will be sure that if you have a bad president, in four years he will be gone, but if you have an evil king, well it takes more to remove him.

Have you seen the show "Kings"? If not, you should check it out. It's on NBC on Sundays. Or you can find it on the internet. No, I don't think a Monarchy would be a good idea in America. Though, this could change depending on events of the future.

Good thoughts, gewcew. I don't believe that Americans could ever adopt the mentality necessary to have a monarcy. Our independent roots run too deep and not only do the red, white and blue not run...we don't kneel or curtsy either. We already have our symbolic *royalty*...the Kennedy family...and I believe that's as far as we would be willing to go as a country.
