What type of computer virus is this ??????

Hello, Has anybody at anytime got this type of virus (I'm assuming it is one because of some superficial research I did on the net) where each time I open the Taskbar, on the Processes Tab, there's this random number with the ".exe" extension, running as a process. I once did a procedure I followed up from someplace on the internet, where I deleted it from the registry, but the very next day it was there again, that was frustrating. I'm trying to do this for my work computer, and my boss does not believe he has to spend money on a good antivirus or antispyware software, because for him "the computer looks to be working fine to me", but then again, he's the boss. So, if there's anything good out there that you may know it will be effective to remove this problem, by the way, it should be free to download, I would appreciate it very much.
