would you give alms to beggars.. we got countless beggars here who wont do any work and would sit in front of temples or mosque and would depend on people to put some money in their container. They would deliberately break their leg or arm to get sympathy and wont let it heal. it does make them very pitiable but i have known policeman who told me what they do... Since then i never give them anymoney how bad their condition may be and Govt says if you give them 1 rs ( 2 cents)one time you make them beggar for life.. since they find it easy money and would never work. So are you in a habit of giving alms to beggars?

I give some alms to some beggars. but i think we have to choose whom we gonna give it. I give alms to old beggars coz there cant work with their age also to the parent with a child. But i guess the best thing is to give them food instead of money. I think we cannot blame those beggars why they do that. There are lots of people who graduated but dont have a work. Some are high school graduate, they dont have work either. How can these beggars find a job if these people who are graduates and educated cant find a job either. That's why they only depend on the alms from us.

I would disagree with you. You must never give anything to them because if you say ok you are hungry i would get u a small job , u do labour and earn ur food or money they would never do it because they are used to this easy money. Well the job of educated people is different than uneducated ones. They can be labourors which educated people wont be and there is always shortage of hard working labourers.

In our industy right now even laborers they have to be a highchool graduate for them to be hired. For those who are not educated i guess the job that they can have is a helper in a house but not every one would hire them because they're not educated and they dont have a trust on them.

I gave a little to those who are much old or disabled. I pity the children as well but learning how they are being manipulated by the syndicates I no longer give. Right these children have to learn to work and earn. Though should I have enough, I won't mind the doubts I probably would give them alms even an equivalent to their meal. What matters I was able to help in a little way I could.

I used to pity beggars when I was a kid. But this misconception was cleared when I actually faced a situation in which I found out they should not be pitied at all. I was on phone after parking my two wheeler when a small girl came to me begging. As I was on phone obviously I didn't pay attention to her. She pinched me on hand and walked away. That was the time I swore I'd never ever pity on such beggars!

Right now I am in Sheffield UK. There was a story in our local evening paper a few months ago. The reporter had watched beggars in the center of town and he watched one pack up and leave and he followed him. The man went quite a distance to a car park - opened the trunk of a very expensive almost new car and took out clothes on a hanger. He went into a nearby mens toilets and came out dressed in some expensive clothes with an expremely expensive pair of shoes on. The man got into the car and drove away with the reporter folloing him. He drove to a nearby town to a subdivision with new homes and the starting price on them was around £250,000 ($355,000) at todays rate of exchange. The man pulled into the drivway of one of these homes - the garage door went up and he put the car in the garage and went into the house. Not bad for a beggar. This was the second such story that I had read. Before this if I passed a beggar and had any change in my pocket I would throw it in to their collection. Not any more.

You are right us2owls , there was a beggar in Delhi who had 4 big houses in Delhi when for normal person it is not even possible to buy a small 2 room flat ( apartment) and he had hotels in various hill stations in India. But he was at such a place where people would give him alms and when this story got out i dont know if police did something to him or if he is still happily begging.

It's Pretty similar to beggers here in Egypt, some even goes as far as cutting a limb so people would pity them and give them money, also some of those are very young children but I NEVER give beggers, a friend once gave a kid some money because he claimed he haven't ate in 3 days (which might be true) but went and bough some cigrattes and came to tease her, he must've been 8 or 9. ever since she stopped giving beggers too.

I never give money to beggars…its my own principle. Most beggars are good enough to do some honest work but as you said, they are just too lazy and not bothered to improve themselves. They just breed by the dozens and hold forth crying naked sick babies to bring in sympathy and the jingle of coins. Most men waste the money on booze and other vices. It’s an easy way of life for them and they even have unions to protect themselves from eviction from prominent places. I give alms only to very old women who are genuinely in need of help (not old men, coz at any age they are more prone to bottle than medicine).

It really depends on the situation of the certain person needing for alms and i know exactly who are pretending. Helping and understanding their life is good but its not right to give them something/ money for they might see it as a routine. They will demand on it.

I never give money to beggars because I believe that everyone has a chance to find a work or to do something and earn the money. They obviously don't want that chance and because of that I never give them anything. I especially hate those who say that are hungry and if you want to give them food they throw it away because they didn't want food, they wanted money and food was just an excuse. In Croatia we don't have extreme beggars like the one that break their arms or legs or intentionally harm themselves... Happy mylotting and I hope no one will give them money so we can exterminate that way of living.

Beggars are every noo0k and corner of Delhi go anywhere, be it temple, mosque, gurudwaras, fancy eating joints, red lights or even outside bars. Yes i have seen them doing this what you are pointing out like breaking their bones or making deep wound on their body just to get some sympathy money. Even i have seen them renting infants and then trying to ask for alms that this child is very hungry.. it is really shameful and no we shouldnt be giving them anything and i dont give anything to them.

yes ur right and it is really shameful and it really shames me when they go around foreigners begging from them and keep harassing them thinking they would get huge money, much more than they get from locals.. it really is bad and i think what image they would take back home of our country.

What you say is correct. Sometimes or most of the times they will do things deliberately to create sympathy for them. But when I walk past one of them if he is busy begging from somebody else I generally pass by. But if he stands in front of me and asks for something I generally give it maybe 1 rupee or 2 rupees. Basically when I see the saddened face (maybe he is acting) I just cannot move on ignoring it. What I think is if I give him 1 rupee maybe he will eat something. So generally I will give alms if asked for although I am fully aware what you are saying is true.

Thanks abhi.. I think if u give them one rupee then you make them beggar for whole of his life. Because think he is on red light of a busy road in Delhi where over 100,000 cars pass and if one in 100 cars gave them one rupee it would be 1000 rs a day which is real big amount.

Personal i would be better to give alms to beggars rather to give them things or money. If people with tend to give money with the beggars, he/she would not be able to learned how to work and support his/herself except those who are physically impaired and unable to do work. So i think its good to teach beggars so that they will be more productive in small ways or big ways it really doesn't matter what is more important he/she can be useful for the society.

thanks for the response mhil84 and yes they should be given some training and they would go for the training only if people would stop giving them money. it was in papers long time back that a begger had 4 big houses in delhi and would continue to beg...and he was sitting outside a big temple where people give lots of alms that he could build 4 houses.

when I was young, i saw some beegers who begged foods but didn't beg for money. But there are many beggers in the every corner of the city noe, such as in park, street, bus station and etc. and they ask for money instead of foods. I don't give alms every time when i meet a begger since it is very often to meet one here. But if it is a child, i will give alms as much as i can.

Thanks Bruce for the response and i would rather not give any money to any children because the money would be taken away from them by their parents or who so ever is in charge of them and if children are begging and getting money then they would whole life keep begging .

I never give alms to beggars. Because some of them, in our country were being controlled by syndicates who where commanding them to beg for money in different streets and to any people they see. As if we are only giving to the syndicate that controlling them. Although maybe some of them are just became beggars because of unmeasurable poverty in our country, giving money to them or anything will not make them live forever and be productive but will only worsen the situation in our country. They will continue on begging alms as long there are persons giving them.

yes you are right , most of them in cities or religious places are controlled by the Mafia and they would even break their arms or legs so people would give them money in sympathy. And once they get used to begging they would never work because it easy money for them

No I hardly give alms to the beggers. I think giving alms encourages them to be unemployed. As you have correctly mentioned, they break their arms etc. intensionally, so I think if we all stop giving them alms then they will look for different methods of earning and thus will help them ultimately.

most people donate alms to beggars. if not always but most often we all tend to donate to beggars. just a few weaks back i was reading in the newspapers that there are gangs that opperate. these are gangs which hire little kids from poor families. they amputate their limbs and then force them to beg. after beinng reported through newspapers, now the governments would take care of it. accordig to the newspapers i read, PM has said he would look into the matter.
well, most probably the situation would get better in due course.
