I was told by a friend who is a voracious reader that she started her reading habits by listing every word that was unfamiliar to her whenever she read a newspaper or magazine, and even watch television. She then gets a dictionary and as she learns the meaning of each word, she understood the sentence where the word was used and ultimately she understood the content of the articles and even the shows she watched. As her vocabulary increased, her reading also improved. Now she does not need the dictionary as much as before. She reads what interests her and mostly whatever she can find. I too had applied the same technique and I guess it worked because here I am reading discussions and contributing some. :)

I would recommend starting out with shorter stories. Think about some areas of interest and start searching online. A few great sites to search on are www.bn.com and www.amazon.com . Both of these sites allow you to read reviews of the books from customers, which always helps me decide whether or not I want to purchase a book. Also, you can typically get books cheaper on these sites than in a book store. Once you have some topics picked out, start looking for some books that may interest you. Plan a specific time during your day that you'd like to sit down and read. Even if it's for only ten minutes. I usually reserve this time around bedtime. I like to crawl into bed and read for 15-20 minutes before bed, or before I fall asleep. haha
