Does this happen to you while sleeping?

Sometimes while sleeping I want to move, but I can't be able to move any part of the body for few seconds. If there is someone sitting or sleeping near me, I feel like to shout and get help. It feels like I am shouting but no sound is really coming out...Then after few seconds with little more effort I become able to move...And still if it happens once, it happens again and again for few times....Does this happen to you?

I sometimes do something like this, but its more of a thing where I feel like someone or something is bothering me and I need to wake up and tell itto stop, but it's like you can't wake up. Sort of like, you're dreaming but it doesn't really feel like a dream. This could also have something to do with you entering or exiting REM sleep. REM is the portion of your sleep pattern where you're sleeping at your deepest to the point that every muscle in your body relaxes and you're momentarily paralyzed, and then the sleep cycle starts over with your lightest sleep, when you're more prone to dreaming. Something could be gone awry with your sleep patterns and you may be between stages of sleep when this happens, it could also have something to do with what you ate before bed. Some foods do cause restless sleep. I would suggest keeping a journal and writing down the days, nights in this case, which this happens to you. If you feel that it's becoming too disrupting maybe you should mention it to your doctor.

Hello LykeWhoaItsAmber!!!
Well this is a wonderful response for this query. I certainly knew that this is natural and happens to most of the people while sleeping. Yes the feeling is exactly same the way are you describing like IT'S A DREAM BUT IT DOESN'T REALLY FEEL LIKE IT IS A DREAM.
I think this is really a nice thing to discuss out here....
What my opinion on this is that, we are actually dreaming that we are shouting. And dreaming that we are trying to move. But actually we are not moving. And we awake really, then only we can move. Do you mean this or different thing....
And krajibg! Can this really be the threat to life? I didn't know...
Happy mylotting....

Not so much, but what is lost if we take a little care of ourselves as we go to bed? And in such situation you should not panic. I know as I have been told that when I am in such phase I groan sort of.

Are you talking about dreams?
Every person in this world has dreams and there are meaning to it also. So, you are not able to move in your dreams means that you are fighting against some problems in your life. sometime it can also show that you are facing problem with your house. Do you live in your own house or on rent?

oh okay! I did't know about much technicality about a dream but what I know is that we need rest and that is why we get a sleep at night.
Ah, nice explanation though, mind is awake but body isn't? I have had some dreams in which I am running and after getting out from sleep, I can feel the tiredness of running, it happends very rare though!

Thanks for responding back.
Now you are telling another amazing thing really. I don't ever get tired due to the running in dream hehe...But sometimes it may happen that I may wake up suddenly from the bad dream and have my heart beating faster with afraidness...Do you mean the same thing or something else...

Hello fren!!!
Well I think you didn't understand this thing because this things doesn't happen to you. Ok, By now I have know many things about this from this discussion. Well this is just natural and happen to many people. This is called sleep paralysis. That when we wake immediately from sleep, our mind is awake but our body is not. So it takes some time to come under control. But I believe more that this is a dream, the dream that seems to be too much real and sometimes too suffocating too. This happens more when we are too much tired and our body want to rest, rest, rest. so after we sleep our body get too much relaxed and because of the tiredness, the body tends to rest even though our mind is awake...
hey do you mean that the house I am living is hunted hehe...I live in my own house with my family. We don't have such problems...
happy to get you in the discussion again and again. sorry for responding late. Happy mylotting...

yes the same thing happens to me. At first I thought it was something spiritual happening to me but when I started looking it up on the internet I found it has something to do with Brian censors... I can hear very clear, and sometimes I would feel like someone else was in the room when they really were not. I herd voices some good and bad....its actually a sleep disorder many people have and don't know its when the brian awakes from rem state but the body doesn't. leaving you paralized yet concious you should check it out at this web site: Http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/sleep_paralysis

Hello Acoustic Soul!!!
Well that is really the nice article and nice demonstration with the picture. Well I did never such ghosts in that case. May be the people who believe a lot in such things cause them to see such things but I just feel I can't wake up, nothing more...
I can see many people here complaining that, it happens when a ghost comes and press you. Like they can see a big ghost pressing them in the dream, sometimes even catching the neck...and so on...But I had always been saying to them that is just a dream that we mistaken for reality.
Today I understood about this REM concept for this...Brain wakes up but not the body, great point...Now I can explain to others who complain this yeah...Thank you very much....
Enjoy mylotting...

happens to me all the time. it could be a dream where you are half asleep and your mind is playing tricks on you. its happened many times..even with close friends. it's wild because you think its abnormal, it's not. everyone feels this way - i especially do during mornings.

Yes, it does happen sometimes, I have heard of a story about it actually but it is just supersitious, I don't trust it 100%, it was about when you cannot move meaning some sort of "ghost" is laying on top of you or something, evne you want to move, but you cannot. But I perosnally think it is just because we might lean on one side and the blood got all squeezed so we cannot move it immediately, just need to relax and wait for couple minutes, then it will be alright... what do you think?

Hello mermaidivy!!!
Yes I have telling my mom and the people here the same thing. It is superstitious to think that it is really the ghost that is doing it. Many people here also tell the same that the ghost is pressing you so that you cannot move. When this thing happens sometimes it is followed by hallucination too. Some people really see the ghosts when it happens. But I say they are dreaming. Because I have personally felt is about two times and then concluded that it was just a bad dream. The dream that was full of fear and seeming totally real, but actually a dream. And I define dream as the thoughts of our mind. So, that the particular ghost is also in our thoughts. That's why those who believe that the ghost is doing all this stuff, really see it when it happens. I have seen many people complaining about this here...
Yes, it just needs some moments to come back to the form. But need small effort to get moved soon. Else it starts to feel suffocated to me. It feels as if I didn't give the try to move, I would just suffocate and die. That's why its annoying...
Thanks for sharing mermaidivy...

Yes, this has happened to me several times. Though you feel you are awake actually you are not. This is the semi sleep state when you are half awake and half sleep. It happens if your sleeping position was not comfortable, if you felt not so clean feel or lately you have been in some or the other sort of stress or tension or in fear.
This is the outlet of this feeling only.

Hello krajibg!
You are right. That was what my feeling. I wanted to know the people's feeling on this.
This is the phase where we are trying to wake up from the dream to reality. So the effort to wake up is all the dream.
Sometimes, if I have exam it happens that I am actually dreaming in the morning that I am already woke up and am ready but actually dreaming. I hope this happens to everyone...Well the same way, we are being unable to move means, we are not actually moving but just dreaming......
Thanks for the response....

Hello Ozerkgirl!
Yes it happens to many people. And it just irritates and bothers the good sleep. Sometimes I even become afraid to sleep after that.
Don't worry its just a semi dream, where we are only half conscious as trying to return from the dream to reality...

According to my husband (whom is a psychologist) says that it is called Sleep Paralysis and this is when your brain wakes up from REM state (Rapid Eye Movement), but the body Paralysis persists (body paralysis is normal during REM sleep). This leaves you fully conscious, but unable to move. The Paralysis can last from several seconds to several minutes after which you may experience panic symptons.

Oh! I thought it's only me who is experiencing that. Yes I already experienced it several times. It's really an uncomfortable feeling and very scary and dangerous. This is the feeling. I am sleeping then I will suddenly feel paralyzed. I can't move my entire body. It seemed like there's a force preventing me to move. I feel that I am really aware of what's happening. But I can't really hardly move, I should fight and give full effort to move either my arms or legs so that I can be awake. Because if not I would die. Because I can't hardly breath also. After I luckily awake and the sleep again, it can also happen again. I'm really thankful that I always survived that very difficult and deadly situation. I have learned that we not sleep with our body in straight position. We must sleep with either an arm or a leg bend. So that if the bad dream happen, we can kick it up or strengthen it up to wake us up. That is the dream I mostly want to avoid. I'm so glad you started this topic. I now know that many people are experiencing it, not just me. Happy myLotting!

Hello Mark!!!!
Yes, this thing does happen to many of the people in the world but not everyone. I was surprise to hear that there are also the people who have never experienced it. I thought it was completely natural and happens to each and everyone in this world.
I understand what you described clearly. That's what exactly happens. And specially when it happens once, then it tend to happen again and again. So that I feel like not to sleep anymore. Sometimes, this is also followed by hallucination to the people. But I rarely feel any hallucination.
And like you said, we would die if we didn't give a force. I don't know, but I also felt like that always whenever it happened. I just cant keep quiet and let it happen. I feel suffocated and have to move at any cost. Never took a chance to see what happens if just kept quiet haha....
And yes, sleeping straight can be problematic sometimes. I have also notice that our position of sleep affect our dream. How fast or active we are in our dream depends on the position of our sleep.
Thanks for appreciating the discussion and thanks for sharing your experience...

Hello nzalheart
that is worrying... I've never experienced anything like that. The only reason why sometimes I couldn't move my leg or arm is because I've slept at an awlward angle or on it to have either get numbed.
Maybe you should try asking the medical experts about this problem because it's a bit unusual... Hugs...

Well you are lucky that you don't experience such thing. Read the responds below, there are many people who gets this sort of problem. I don't think I have to be really worried about this...
This is a weird feeling, and I wanted to discuss what people think on this matter. I think its the mixture of dream and reality. The dream in which I want to wake up but the sleepiness is not letting me too...uff its very difficult thing to explain...

ah... that explains it...
I misunderstood. If it's an experience which occurs between reality and a dream, yes I do experience this but very very rare. Most of the time, I feel my body falling and I'd wake up when my foot or hand involuntarily twitch or lift lol... or when my whole body reacts to the falling sensation
My bad about the misunderstanding, i thought it's some kind of a paralysis when you are actually awake... Thanks for clearing that up

That's exactly what happens. Feels difficult to move but can't stop trying. If we stop trying we feel even suffocated. So we are bound to try and finally we can move. And yes, it makes me difficult to sleep then, afraid that it happens again and again...
Thanks for the response Hxstar...Good luck mylotting...Have a nice time...

it might be sleep paralysis.
it happens due to lack of enough sleep or say irregular sleeping time. Its is just a hallucination. it has happened to me too..like 2 times a so.
I felt like someone was sitting on my chest.. i was totally awake about everything...but it seemed somewhat like dream and somewhat like real..i couldn't move my body. Dam it was total nightmare. But i haven't felt that since long time ago.
it also happens due to posture of sleep. usually if one is sleeping face upward. And never sleep with hand on your chest.

Hello Acisbro!!!
That is called sleep paralysis very true. It is said that it can be followed by hallucination. But in my case, I did never fall on to any hallucination in such situation. I just feel like I want to wake up and move, but I just can't move at all. It's like battling with the sleepiness to come out of the state. This happens to me very much. Specially if I sleep in the day time and mostly it happens when I am sleeping and want to stop sleeping because I would have some important thing to do, but just sleeping...I want to wake up, but can't and that causes this problem to me...So it has happened to me uncountable times....
Yes I think the posture of sleep also matter. That's why I try to manage the sleeping posture well while sleeping. But I can't totally prevent it. It can also happen due to more reason than the sleeping posture only....

Yes, I used to have that since i was a child so im into it already and im not scared anymore... Thats what they called nightmare.... they said that our brain have something to do with the movements of our body... when u sleep there some neuro transmitter that stop functioning or lets say also into deep sleep...
the best things that you can do is to put full concentration to wake up that neuro transmitter.. and of course if u do some concentration ur brain will do the action.. best is to concentrate by moving the fingers of your feet instead of trying to move and grasp someones attention... u cant move coz ur body looks like paralized... or the one having coma.. they are aware or hear anything but cant move any part of their body...
I used to ask why i need to move the fingers of my feet if i can use the fingers of my hand...
the answer is this... The fingers in our feet are the most furthest part of our head.. a signal from our brain through concentration will sent to that area.. and since its the furthest part then ur brain needs more transmitter, ur brain then will ask help and wake up other sleeping neuro transmitter in order to reached that area if that transmitter reached that furthest part, then thats the only time that it will releases or wake-up all neuro transmitter and will give signal to other part of your body to move..

31 Jul 09
Hello homeshoppesrs...
Well I had never heard about this neuro transmitter. And that seems to be interesting. Actually through this discussion, I heard that moving the tongue is the good start and I have tried it few time too. I don't know whether it really works or not. I think it partly works. I feel like this is the just the case of half sleep and half wake up. Our mind wants to wake up, but the body is still resting relaxed.
And moving fingers of the legs. I think that is the good idea. And also the logic seems to be very nice. I will definitely give it a try the next time when it happens.
yes, we need more concentration to move the body at these times. Well when this thing happens, and if I didn't try to move then it starts suffocating. And that's why I bound to concentrate and try to move at any cost. Now next time, I will definitely try with the fingers of the legs.
Thanks for the nice idea homeshoppers...And thanks for your response....

Hello dengyl,
Yes, it can happened when we are too tired. Our body is completely wanting to relax, and so when our mind is awake, it is still relaxing. Its like the flow of signals between the mind and the body parts beings slow. that though the mind has already told the body to do something, it just can't do anything for sometime.
And about the secret, that is called the lucid dreams. Not all can feel this. But most of the times, if I dream unusual I would realize that i was dream and I wont be afraid but instead would be brave lol. And I rarely see any nightmares..

I never had that happen but what sometimes happens to me is just when I am about to fall asleep, suddenly for no reason at all, one of my arms or legs will suddenly jerk up or kick out! This happens a lot and the more I try to stop it, the more it happens till I just give up, turn on the light and go and do something for about a half an hour, then it stops and I can get to sleep. Sometimes a hot soaking bath will help too. Ever have that kicking or jerking thing?

So the sleep paralysis doesn't happen to you. That's good.
But I am confused about your problem. Things like you said happen to me rare and that also only once. If I am trying to sleep, and suddenly I move my leg or hand sometimes, just like waking suddenly from an imagination. But you are saying it happens a lot. does it happen continuously again and again to you on the same day. This happens to me rare, and if it happened, it happens once, it doesn't repeat. That is really a weird problem I think if it happen again and again. Why don't you start a new thread regarding this. May be other people also have the same problem...

not all the time may be when I am totally freaked out.
there was one time that i was surfing the net then read something strange "If you are reading this you will die".I went to sleep and it must be those lines that made the feeling you mentioned came so the conclusion I came to is that its all connected to your dreams when you are scared.

I occassionally wake up and can't feel my arms or legs. They feel like they are not there at all, but I knmow that they are there. I have to force myself to concentrate hard to get them to move. I have experienced the other too; feeling like I am yelling, but nothing is coming out of my mouth.
I think that it has something to do with my nervous system. I know that the numbness is caused by my back back, but I am not sure about the other part.
I have also had pisodes where I appear to be having a seizure, and I become catatonic for a few minutes. When this happens, I can hear myself yelling that I am fine, and to please get me a drink, but nothing comes out of my mouth. One time, it happened in front of my Mom, and I was able to gain control just before she dialed 911.
Both scenarios are scary for me. I can understand why you are concerned. My best advice would be to go to your doctor and tell him/her what is going on. If you are afraid that you may forget something when you are there, have it written down so you don't.

Hello lynnemg!!!
Ok I learn a lot with this discussion about sleep paralysis. I know this is not really a serious problem as this is just natural and that happen to many people. It is just the case of half sleep and half awake. When we are too sleepy or when our body is in complete relax situation but if the mind is awake, this happens. I knew that other people also feel this, though I wanted to learn about his experience in other people too. So different people have different intense of this kind of feeling. Some people even hallucinate about the ghosts in this case....I think you had the more intense case....
But its just so problematic....

When I was sleeping near my father he just used to sleep in the middle of the bed and I was so confused to find myself at the edge of the bed.
