This photo shows another area I've dug up for more garden items this year here in Minnesota. The area with the white fencing will be my pickles more than likely. They will climb up the fence. (hopefully) The area along the fence will be for my various beans. They also climb and should cling to the fence easily. I have to add more small fencing around the area to keep Buster, my beagle, from trampling down the plants when they are first planted. Do you plant any type of climbing veggies at all? Do you use a natural support or do you use sticks and or string etc? HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB!!~

My sister planted some cucumbers one time and did the climbing thing with them. They did pretty well. My grandma used to grow cucumbers in the summer time, but she just left hers growing on the ground. Hers did well too. She had pickling size and regular size.

My cukes I just plant on the ground as I pick them almost everyday when ripe. The pickles I pick once a week or two weeks. I don't want them left on the damp ground to rot etc. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB!!~

Do you plant corn? Have you ever thought about planting your beans so that they climb the stalks? From what I've been told, corn puts nitrogen into the soil, which is used by the beans. I tried that one year and had the best green and yellow beans ever.

I had no idea that corn was such a helper for beans! Thanks for sharing! I will definitely have to remember that for when hubby and I get into our own house and we can have our own garden!

I learned about the idea from my history classes way back when I was in high school. We were told that Native Americans would plant the 'Three Sisters' with the corn, beans planted to climb the stalks and squash plants planted around both. Together they made for a fairly pest-free (animal pests anyway) garden because rodents won't walk where they cannot see the ground. This was accomplished with the leafiness of the squash plants growing around the corn and beans. An added bonus is that corn, beans and squash consumed together make a complete amino acid, and is excellent for a diet that is either meat-free or low in meat. I never have the room to so the squash too, but someday I hope to try it.

Wow Grandpa Bob :) I'm impressed, your garden is really starting to come together. As you know we are renting so no garden at this house :( The Landlord might let us plant some flowers in the front though so that will be nice!

pretty flowers - Not sure what these are but they grow on vines on the fences.
No climbing veggies here but wish I did, even non climbing ones. If our landlord didn't have the house up for sale I would have my son plant us a small garden. We do have some vines that grow wild on the fences around here, not sure where they come from or where it started but they sure do bloom pretty. I did put a picture on here last year but this picture has a whole lot of the flowers on them.

I will be planting tomatoes and they climb like crazy. A friend of mine in AZ got a "topsy turvy" where they grow upside down but I'm trying to save money, not spend it, so I'll let it climb. I guess I'll rig up something, I haven't decided yet.

I didnt know that cucumbers would climb if they had somewhere to climb to - i think i might try putting up some climbing fence and trying this too because its always so hard to weed around them because they spread out so far. I use sticks and string for climbing or the netting you can get at home depot.

I have just planted a climbing rose and two clematis. I bought two wooden frames to train hem up. I grow my sweet pea up an obelisk. I really want to grow some vegetables this year also, so you can give me a few tips on how to start. I guess I need to dig a vegtable patch first. My Mother uses some green mess for her vegetables and trains them around it. Digging is hard work though and I have been doing it for three Summers now, but my garden is getting there at last.
