Help! How do I toilet train my puppies?

I'm really hoping that someone is able to give me some tips here, as I've never had puppies before and haven't the first clue how to train them! I have four puppies at home, nine weeks old now. They are unfortunately motherless, so there's no-one but me to teach them that under my kitchen table isn't the place to go! Honestly, sometimes I find it difficult to believe that four such small creatures can possibly contain so much, particularly in the morning when they've been locked up all night! So, what do you suggest? Do you have any tried and tested tricks I should try? Or if you haven't, please just tell me your puppy toilet training nightmares to make me feel better about my own!

I've thought about this for a while now. I think that you have to train them the same as children. Put them on the potty at set times. Put them in "day" nappies and don't scold them when there are accidents. Eventually move them on to the "grown up" toilet. You may have to make a special seat for them, and I would have a little ramp if you have boy puppies. Perhaps with a post that sticks up out of the loo so that they can associate it with a tree. Girls are better than boys at wiping. But make it clear that you expect the toilet paper to be used and I am sure that all will be well. Dogs are quite fast learners. Does that help?

A special seat for the dogs? Remember that you're talking here with the woman with no toilet seat attached at all! Thanks so much for your help there, helpful as ever. It's just as well the little one's coming out of his nappies now. they'll double up as dog nappies with a swift nip and tuck.

My best advice would be to use lots of love and encouragement and don't make a big fuss over little accidents as that only reinforces the behavior. Here's one of my favorite articles on potty training a puppy. http://www.bukisa.com/articles/71939_how-to-potty-train-your-puppy

I guess much of the advice is the same as for human babies! Love and encouragement :-)

Confine them to a small space and take them outside every couple of hours. Animals won't usually soil their nests and it's the same with puppies. Are you sure they are ready to be trained? Some at that age don't have control of their bladders and bowels. Never, ever hit them, even with a paper! Use lots of praise when they "go" outside, that's about all I can tell you.

This is how I trained my baby....I taught him the word potty. Everytime I went outside with him I would say lets go potty. And I take him outside regularly. Start out with every 2 hours. Treat him just like a human baby. And right after you feed him go outside with him. Watch his actions & learn how he looks when he needs to go potty. Oh and first thing in the morning get straight up & go outside with them. Dogs & pigs are the smartest animals alive. And this is how I feel about my babies. Adam named the dog....dog is spelled God backwards....God looks out after us from heaven & our dog looks out after us from earth. God Bless.

They're just in the kitchen (the easiest floor to clean!), but I swear it's unbelievable that such small creatures can make so much mess when I turn my back!

I give you alot of credit for keeping and training so many puppies ! It's hard enough training one at a time, let alone 4 . I think the best way to house train dogs is not letting them have run of the house . They should be in a crate or confined in some way . Only left out when you can keep an eye on them and take them out to potty. You also need alot of praise when the dog does potty outside . Good luck to you ~~

Take them outside frequently. Stay out until they pee and then let them back in the house. It's time consuming, but as their bladders get bigger and stronger they will know that when you take them out is the time to go, not when their hanging out under the kitchen table.

We've had three dogs so far and we've learned from it as time goes by. I suggest you confine them in an area, make sure they won't get out. Place newspaper on the floor, you will notice that they do their business in the same spot, this will give you a clue where to place newspaper. Follow a schedule. Take them outside in the morning, afternoon and night. If possible after every meal or you can feed them outside your house. Find the schedule that work best for you and your puppies and stick to your schedule. Sooner or later they won't do their business inside your home but instead they will catch your attention just so you could take them outside and excrete. You'll be successful in no time.

I seem to have got it sorted during the day, but the nighttime when I can't take them out so often is a nightmare!

take you puppy for walk daily 2 times a day, morning and evening.I think in few days he will learn and understand that the right place for toilet is outside of the home. I have no dogs but my friend have one and he take his dog for walk 2 times a day and his dog learned to do toilet outside of home.

It requires a lot of patience and a lot of your time. Take them out immediately when they get up in the morning and then again several times during the day. You will start to recognize their patterns when they need to go. Also be sure they go out after every meal and again before putting them down for the night. When they make a mistake tell them "NO" very firmly and put them outside for a while until they go again, then praise them for doing it outside. Never hit them or rub their noses in the mistake, just firmly correct them verbally. At first it will seem like they are training you to see their needs, but in the end they will be very obedient and happy to please you. Good luck.

I have a Golden Retriever. Tried the training pads and sprays but all he did was tear up the pads. He apparently decided they were toys for him. Spent more time picking up all the pieces of those things than cleaning up accidents.

Glad I haven't spent all my money on the pads in that case! Newspaper is allot cheaper!

this reminds me of the time my boyfriend gave me a puppy and i raised it inside our apartment. it was such a hassle to clean up her mess. so after feeding her, i will bring her outside and stay with her until she finished then we will go inside. but in the morning, there will still be a mess =( one funny thing is, i boarded the bus with her because i will have her stay for good with my folks. when we stopped for a while, i brought her outside and she immediately peed haha. she did not pee even once inside the bus. she did not also make any noise like barking, she was well behaved inside the bus i was so proud of her =)

There was no way to train my pug when he was small, as I had never owned a dog. I bought some spray teaching him to pee on the right place, but he sometimes peed here and there, he sometimes peed at the right place. I punished him peeing at the wrong place, but I didn't think he really understood, so he peed as he liked sometimes, escpecially I went out, he might want to show his unpleasantness for I let him stay home alone. I started to walk him out to pee when he was 8, it really works. Until now, he seldom pee at home, and he would rather hold it and wait until I walk him out. I know how annoying to clean up all this mess, but I love my pug so much, I cleaned up all his mess even I was busy and tired.

4 puppies what a handful. When I got my 2 puppies a couple years back at night I kenneled them. When i woke up i took them outside first thing. brought them back in feed watered them played with them took them out again. If we were not watching them they were in the kennel. for the first 2 weeks. They never did have a accident in the house. It was time consuming but it worked. I have 2 great dogs now.

I don't have a kennel unfortunately, though if I'm not with them in the house they run free outside where they can make a mess to their heart's content.

Dogs will never "potty" where they sleep. Put them in a smaller sized kennel for short periods of time than take them out to go to the bathroom. They will than get the idea of where they live vs where they go to bathroom. It worked for both of our dogs.

My housebroken training for him wasn't too bad, I took him home when he was 8 weeks old, my hubby and me kept an eye on him, make sure when he has the sign of needing to pee or poo, we put him out immediately, we tried this for like 1-2 weeks, he got that pretty quick, he might forget or couldn't keep it within the 1 1/2 months but then he didn't need me to say anything anymore when he needs it, he just sit in fornt of the door and looks at me. It is how I taught him to pee outside, when he is going to or when you can tell he is going to do that, put him right away and say a very strong command - outside ro something that you think it's better. ( I said NO first, because it is what I say to him when he does any types of bad stuff like chew up something/grab thing on the table etc so he knows when I say that, he is wrong, it works!!) When he pee outside, tell him good boy and give him cookies - compliment for being good. They are just like kids, tell them what to do and practise, they can get it real quick but we - parents :-p need to be very patient too, don'tlet them think they are big dog, otherwise, you will have a real spoiled baby dog. I hope it helps you!!! Wish you good luck with the puppy!!!

Hi GreenMoo, Like us, all puppies are individual with different needs & learning abilities!! With our first pup we used training sheets, spray & made sure she went out into the garden alot. Each time we took her in the garden we waited until she did something before going back in. With four (You very brave person!!) If one gets it the rest should follow!! Also when we took her on walks we'd walk until she did something. Which was often on the neighbours garden whilst we had a chat!!! There are lots of ways & aides to teach them, you just need to find what works for them! Have fun & good luck with four!!! Mrsl x

I would try the training pads..I have heard a lot of good things about them and they seem to work pretty well. I have also heard of people using newspaper by the door that you would like them to go to to let you know they need out. Make sure that you are taking them outside quite often and sit with them out there until they use the potty. Once they go out they will slowly learn that that is where they are suppose to go. If they have an accident inside the house be sure to tell them no and stick them right outside. Also be sure to praise them if they go potty outside and if they get to the point where they are scratching or whining at the door be sure to praise them then too, that way they know that that is what they are suppose to do. Make sure though that you are able to have the time or awareness so if they do go to the door you are able to let them out because if they happen to let you know and you didn't hear them punishing them can be hard...they will then think that they did wrong for scratching at the door just because you didn't hear them. Hopefully they will catch on quickly...Good Luck!!!

The scratching at the door thing is a very good point. i'll defintely bear that in mind!
